- The Prospect Park Zoo is a 12-acre (4.9 ha) zoo located off Flatbush Avenue on the eastern side of Prospect Park, Brooklyn, New York City. As of 2016, the zoo houses 864 animals representing about 176 species, and as of 2007, it averages 300,000 visitors annually. The Prospect Park Zoo is operated by the Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS). In conjunction with the Prospect Park Zoo's operations, the WCS offers children's educational programs, is engaged in restoration of endangered species populations, runs a wildlife theater, and reaches out to the local community through volunteer programs.
After 53 years of operation as a city zoo run by the New York City Department of Parks and Recreation, Prospect Park Zoo, also colloquially known as "Brooklyn Zoo", closed in June 1988 for reconstruction. The closure signaled the start of a five-year, $37 million renovation program that, save for the exteriors of the 1930s-era buildings, completely replaced the zoo. It was rededicated on October 5, 1993, as the Prospect Park Wildlife Conservation Center, as part of a system of four zoos and one aquarium managed by the WCS,[a] all of which are accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA).
Exhibits
The zoo presents three themed exhibition venues, each housed in a dedicated building.
DISCOVERY TRAIL
A great place to escape from the city and explore at your own pace, encountering red pandas, dingoes, and a host of beautiful birds.
HALL OF ANIMALS
From dwarf mongooses to dart frogs, some of our smallest but most amazing species reside in the Hall of Animals.
ANIMAL LIFESTYLES
Explore the lives and behavior of a diverse range of species, including Geoffroy’s marmosets, native to small fragments of rainforest in eastern Brazil. WCS works within this species’ range and in many South American countries to reconcile the needs of human development and wildlife conservation.
BARN AND GARDEN
Enjoy a great day on the farm right here in Brooklyn with our friendly, gentle animals. For a true treat, dole out a handful of grain.
SEA LION COURT
In their pool at the heart of the park, our sea lions are some of the zoo’s most popular residents. They’re also noisy, particularly during training time.

Have you ever been to the Bronx Zoo Central Park Zoo or Queens Zoo before
On your next zoo visit you should definitely go to the living desert zoo in California. They say is one of the best zoos in the country so you should give it a try. Just make sure to bring water and a hat because it could be hot. Comment and like if anyone else thinks that too.
Thanks for that great suggestion, I am planning a return to California next year.
It says “prizes have been found”
Does that mean all of them or just some of them like were there people watching you guys throw them out there and then they went and picked them up or?
Honestly I don't recall what you are referencing about. Would you mind adding a time stamp to the portion of the tour? Thank You
Nice selection of animals

I was there over 50 yrs ago . I was a kid & was robbed at gunpoint for my bus pass wallet which had $1 . Not much has changed , they did hav elephants when I was there as well .
