You know how sometimes we play the game of "Who would you like to have a nice long dinner out with?" or "Who would you like to spend the day with?" and stuff like that? I want to change my answer to Ethan Hawke.
I watch/listen to a ton of interviews and talks from film makers like this one. Really think Ethan has a wonderful non fiction book in him. Not sure if some sort of memoir or something closer to film history/analysis like Tarantino's Cinema Speculation. But he's incredibly eloquent and seems to be much more thoughtful than the vast majority of actors.

Eh, I don't fully agree with his point about criticizing directors for rolling their eyes at actors and thinking "Is he gonna f**k up my shot-list?" I think having passionate actors who really care about what they're doing is great. However, directors are under extreme pressure to get the movie done on time and on budget, and sometimes they don't have time for that. Sometimes you just need to trust the director and do what they need you to do.
This audience was meh. I think Americans are so spoilt with so many stars in one country. I would be so energised to hear every word he says and every answer deserves a round of applause
Around the 42 minute mark when he talks about, "if we don't get one positive review, we're doing something right" I love the new Joker movie, Folie A Duex. Nobody likes that movie. It was so punk rock, and it was heartbreaking. I think that film was made with that brazen.
Why is he putting down the cinematographers? He or she is responsible for making all of the director's ideas look good, and he or she rarely has the luxury of arguing about a director's bad idea.
Totally agree. Interesting that he didn’t consider there aren’t a lot of cinematographers as directors because they actually enjoy and value the work they do and their role on set.
