    I love these in depth answers he gives. Glad the interviewer let him go as far as he needed. We as an audience really benefit from that.

    Ethan deserves the Oscar for First Reformed.

      Agreed. It's so weird how it went to Rami Malek for wearing a Freddy Mercury Halloween costume, yet he never got an Emmy for the performance he did deserve an award for - Mr Robot.

    Newfound respect for Ethan Hawke! How amazingly thoughtful, insightful, and engaged he is. This interview could have gone on for 2 more hours, and I would have sat captivated listening.

    Nick Pinkerton is one of the most thoughtful and probing film critics alive. Delighted to see he's also an intelligent and engaged interviewer. Ethan Hawke clearly appreciates it and gives genuinely insightful and sincere answers. What an absorbing conversation.

    This was such a great interview. It applies to so many of us creatives, how we struggle to make art and have it understood by the general population. Those who buy our art never truly understand the ecstasy and the agony of being the person chosen to create it. I love Ethan Hawke; I always have. Getting to see inside his mind as another creative is a joy. 🩵

    You know how sometimes we play the game of "Who would you like to have a nice long dinner out with?" or "Who would you like to spend the day with?" and stuff like that? I want to change my answer to Ethan Hawke.

    I watch/listen to a ton of interviews and talks from film makers like this one. Really think Ethan has a wonderful non fiction book in him. Not sure if some sort of memoir or something closer to film history/analysis like Tarantino's Cinema Speculation. But he's incredibly eloquent and seems to be much more thoughtful than the vast majority of actors.

    Eh, I don't fully agree with his point about criticizing directors for rolling their eyes at actors and thinking "Is he gonna f**k up my shot-list?"
    I think having passionate actors who really care about what they're doing is great. However, directors are under extreme pressure to get the movie done on time and on budget, and sometimes they don't have time for that. Sometimes you just need to trust the director and do what they need you to do.

    Around the 42 minute mark when he talks about, "if we don't get one positive review, we're doing something right" I love the new Joker movie, Folie A Duex. Nobody likes that movie. It was so punk rock, and it was heartbreaking. I think that film was made with that brazen.

    Why is he putting down the cinematographers? He or she is responsible for making all of the director's ideas look good, and he or she rarely has the luxury of arguing about a director's bad idea.

    • @chea13
      @chea13 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      Totally agree. Interesting that he didn’t consider there aren’t a lot of cinematographers as directors because they actually enjoy and value the work they do and their role on set.
