@@HayesTransport The people in that area are poor so it's not going to be profitable for hackers to hack the system. Also, most hackers are poor and I believe they would support such system instead of destroying it. Plus, what makes you think the people who created EII aren't hackers themselves who are just trying to help the poor people?
@John Diaz All the job opportunities are outside the city. Same for all the good schools. This the result of White flight which was created by the government. Detroit is not built like a "city", it has highways cutting right through it that were funded by government, suburbs outside that were subsidized by the government and list goes on. This resulted in what some people term as segregation. The one who need Jesus are not these poor people, but the one living outside.
Even more important - sometimes when we undertake technical projects...the competency that you develop stays with you. These folks will learn more networking and I.T. skills than any bachelor's program.
Dogs Sing tes especjally a 1 bar internet connection spread to more than one but only in a small area and not over more than 50 miles like most slow internet services(but are still quite fast)
I grew up in detriot and i was the only kid on the block that had a computer with internet because my mom built and sold computers so this is absolutely amazing to see that people are doing this. honestly make me want to fly back and help.
smartphones are physically capable of acting as a wifi mesh network, it just needs software and adoption. Future developments in 'cognitive radio' could make this even more practical.
In the early 2000's my high school friends in our small town created a private network for gaming, before the internet was fast enough for games like Quake. We set up wireless transmitters and relays between our houses that spanned miles. It was a super fun project.
DivaLyri Brazil He cannot be contacted because he's lying. His friends used to play via LAN like the rest of us. Nobody in their right mind would set up wireless transmitters spanning miles just to play games.
@@Jacobh3620 You guys are talking about countries and multinationals that have vested interests in make MONEY. Millions of dollars. How can you even compare some teenager wanting to have some fun with his friends to that? Get real lol. Not saying it's impossible but it's not believable that HE made it happen
If you know what you are doing you could set up the network with some parts from radio shack and an afternoon. People spend thousands of dollars on amatuer radio equipment, why is this far fetched? Microwave transmission equipment is not that complicated, it's not like they need to trench up the street to lay wire. Literally putting a dish on the roof and pointing it at your friends house is all you would have to do. Building a tree house would be more complicated, and about the same price.
They wont get anywhere with this project. Companies like Comcast will make sure of that. They don't like the idea of free information around the world.
+Admin Assistant, If comcrap doesn't like it... they need to realize that their network runs through places with no cameras on poles that can be climbed. They also don't pay their installers well, so getting them to turn rogue and leak maps of their infrastructure is a given. Then they just send in the goons with scissors, continually, until every paying customer they have cancels their constantly busted-ass service. Porn or not, spreading bandwidth is a tangible lever we can pull to increase prosperity.
Yes alex there is, You can can send them donations to join a comunnity college as with the amount of time spent figuring out how to do this they could have gotten a masters degree and paid for the internet like eveyone else.
I live in metro Detroit and have a strong interest in networking. I LOVE this. These people are learning valuable skills that they could use to work for any IT firm as network engineers, and they are helping the city’s low income residents have access to the internet, which affords many opportunities. Also, they are deploying a very cool network technology with a WiFi based network, which is incredibly cheap to deploy and maintain compared to traditional fiber or copper networks. I hope that their network is engineered well enough to grow to more neighborhoods and to have enough bandwidth to go around. Also, if Dan Gilbert/Rocket Fiber isn’t already supporting this, that would be good to do.
Kyle Preiksa I am so proud of the members of this program. More city funding would serve this program well. Shame on Detroit for giving to the less needy, and not giving to the needy. I’d love to see this program on the Government CFC campaign.
Kyle Preiksa American injuinuity... beautiful to see the kids given a skill and in essence a job, that they enjoy. Something constructive and productive all while helping out the community. Keep growing, learning, and resisting young folk, the world is ours. Forget looking up to these false idols and shallow entertainers who are only out for themselves. The kaepernicks of the world need to shut up and put up. Use just some of those millions and fund these after school learning centers/hangouts , churches, businesses, gyms, community centers, etc. Bring in teachers of trades, chess, business, motivational/public speaking, real estate, etc. Bring police and community together once a week so the people can form bonds. These entertainers have more capability to make a change, than more than 95percent of the people in the country. Don't be fooled by the B.S. propaganda, because obviously they would rather use their platform for nothing else than attention, it seems.
What happened to Detroit? Im from the UK so my knowledge is based on books and TV. I read Middlesex and know a bit about the history as the motorcity was being built and even in the 90's the city was still doing well. The buildings are so grand and beautiful yet everywhere things are being foreclosed upon. How can this city save itself! It's full of such intelligent fighters!
+Kyle Preiksa "These people are learning valuable skills" Yes I agree. "that they could use to work for any IT firm as network engineers" No... Just no. This kind of work does not translate well to a network engineer. Some of the basics sure, but the actual design and implementation of an actual network in a normal IT field do not. In actuality this kind of work that they are doing now can actually hinder them. How? Those kinds of jobs want people who are fresh and or who learned "the right way". By that I mean learned it in a way that applies to the kinds of jobs that are the norm. Now if they go to school and can re-learn and show that they can apply the new learning? Sure. Now what this actually does is help them in the next round of not for profit and maybe non profit types of programs. Other cities around the US, and even across the world can potentially benefit from the way they do things. Especially if they do not have to follow all of the rules and regulations people in the field have to. "Also, they are deploying a very cool network technology" Not sure why you think it's cool... But ok? "which is incredibly cheap to deploy and maintain compared to traditional fiber or copper networks." It's actually a bit more expensive as a whole, depending on what metrics you use to evaluate it. What it is good for is to cut out the rights of ways that can make wired networks expensive. Maintenance on wired networks is not all that expensive it's laying it and finding its way through the city that is. "I hope that their network is engineered well enough to grow to more neighborhoods and to have enough bandwidth to go around." The technology that this is based on means they only have a certain area they can work in. Distance from the source is key, as well as obstacles. In order to go beyond that distance they will need other hubs like the church with fiber and the necessary equipment to branch out. Then you have the limitation of the fiber itself. 1000/1000 is great and all but if you have 100 houses using it simultaneously that's 10/10 if it's proportioned per user. A few houses it will be great but the more that's added the more it needs to be divided up to avoid congestion. Especially at peak times.
Everyone in this video sound very smart, intelligent, great communication skills and are able to put their point across very clearly. Completely makes the stereotype of a ghetto and ghetto people in less fortunate neighborhoods untrue. Very inspiring. Keeping up with the times and not staying behind. Good for you guys!!!
NELSON IRACHETA stop promoting misinformation. Ghetto has nothing to do with being black. There are plenty of uneducated white people that can’t recite the alphabet without help.
its funny cuz this video begins with the line "the state of the internet in Detroit is quit bad" and i m just sitting here thinking just the internet tho? like the whole city looks like the last of us
This video would have not been understood years back. How the internet is now part of survival in today's society. People joining forces for the greater good of their community. So awesome
Why would it not be understood before? Maybe your just finding out about this, but people have BEEN doing this. Many people in other countries have no access to internet and have to create their own. Stuff like this has been around just as long as the internet itself.
You guys are suggesting *rappers* do this? What about the city government? Or the state? Or the Federal government? What about the local millionaire business owners? Why shift this burden onto rappers of all people?
R N I suppose because rappers seem rich and always want to be seen as giving back to their community. Sometimes they get lots of toys for Xmas for kids in the neighbourhood. This project would benefit them a lot more. Besides, isn't a lack of government support to blame for Detroit's deterioration
as a local Detroit citizen , I feel this is the best collaboration of this city i have seen yet .. So Glad to see community also cleaning it up !!!! "KEEP IT UP" AND GREAT WORK TO ALL INVOLVED
Mrbrain bob it still isnt safe enough for the average white person to drive thru 90% of the neighborhoods at 3 am...... much less WALK!!!! When these cities put up a barrier to keep others out....they do a great job with it. And somehow, its seen as us 'keeping them in'. This is the environment THEY created. Which is why white people in general, dont give a shit about them.
The internet should be public infrastructure with how interconnected our world is now into the economic activity of our lives, it being privately owned for profit driven is the real problem. Its like as if your highways and the connecting roads are all private, with for profit tolls and highway thieves jamming them all up - how much business and other human activity would actually get done if those weren't publicly owned, protected, maintained, and [indiscriminately] used?
CanadianWolverine You say that, but the internet being privatized has driven more research into making it faster and more reliable. The government is where things go to stagnate. I guarantee you that there would not be anymore innovations produced in that industry if you had your wish. Also anything the government controls it regulates to death and your privacy is suspect.
You don't really understand how many times regulatory bodies have had to slap the wrists of privatized ISPs do you as they engage in anti-consumerist practices to further their bottom line? Or the number of times seeking the lowest bidder and anti-union practices has resulted in technicians who are dangerous to traffic, the public, and provide poorer service to their customers? Not only that but the number of times where our privacy is suspect in private hands because they turn around and sell your private information to others. Spewing a bunch of conservative "the free hand of the market knows what's best for you" rhetoric with no substantive examples isn't really going to cut it anymore for me, not when I used to vote for them and realized how much they betrayed my interests they said they would represent once in office with bad, incompetent governance that had way more scandal and corruption to it than any previous government.
So you want the government to regulate our internet instead of ISP's? im not saying I agree or disagree but how in the world are the common people going to lay fiber lines 40 fathoms under the sea or maintain 24/7 365 uptime in an infrastructure 99% of the world population can even understand how it works? their are only a couple thousand CCIE's in the world and 8 cisco architects in existence keep in mind. there is enough CCNPs and CCNAs around but why would they work for a public infrastructure that isnt going to afford to pay them shit for their work, also maintenance of the equipment, data centers, data center techs, installers etc
That's a bizarre argument to make, that the government pays crap, considering that in my own local experience, government jobs are easily among the best paid and that the infrastructure in the vast majority is bought and paid for by the government contracts then sold to the privately run company to distribute to the customers. Most fibre / cable laid by ISPs is often just at the very end, from the street to the home. Private interests often do very little of the macro infrastructure expansion or upgrades because the cost/benefit analysis doesn't make sense to them, and is often why infrastructure in private hands falls into disrepair and doesn't see any upgrading.
Koal are you working for no pay to run transmission lines and have computers? Are you making your own electricity? Yes it would be nice if everything was free but sorry the internet is more than just an idea.
I like this, this breaks up the stranglehold on the mega corp internet providers that have a monopoly (remember when monopolies were illegal? ) Good luck guys and get a jump start and find a good lawyer to fight the monopolies that will surely challenge your effort. Good luck in your venture, I wish you the best!
What does government have to do with this? And how can you seriously think that republicans are more technologically forward than the democrats? #baffled
lopez l exactly if they keep putting the sorry politicians in office they aren't going. To get anywhere it's sad they they have to do this on there own, but they are learning a skill which is great!
Really they are just using a bunch of Ubiquiti Networks products and performing the job of a typical rural WISP... Good for them. I'm impressed they are utilizing a gigabit fiber for the main line, that makes it all worth it. Otherwise they would not be capable of doing this on a business class cable connection. Too many devices. They will probably become their own ISP in the area once they get big enough and actually could eventually run cable or get some of those fiber lines reactivated on their own accord.
I love everything about what you guys are doing there. Not only bringing internet to those who need it, but the training and skill you're passing on to the volunteers. This is going to make a real difference in your community over time.
This is the way it should be , internet providers have been screwing the world over so badly for years , in Canada we have a few companies now with unlimited bandwidth at faster speeds ! Good for you Detroit !!!
I can't describe how proud I am of the young people doing such great work, with nothing. It's sad that the FB, TW, GG, etc. just could care less about the poor and disenfranchised.
Tanaka Selman yeen know? The corporations of America could give two shits what happens to the poor. If there's no money in it, the only thing you'll get from them is silence.
The youth is being forced to make these changes because our lazy f****** parents and grandparents have not done s*** and they have let us get this low so we are having to pick up the slack that you'll have left on the ground for hundreds of years so yeah some drastic s***'s going to happen and I promise you a lot of what's going to go down is not going to be legal in the government size you fight fire with fire I fight government gang with people we're fighting a bunch of f****** criminals so what makes you think we should play fair
Maniak that's true but resistance is important anyway. Really these people in authority should get a clue; humans were created to solve problems. No internet might not be a problem for you, but the next guy won't rest until he gets it. People will always find a way around problems like this.
I've been doing this for the last two years. After hurricane Maria, my boss and I built a WISP. It was mostly myself doing configuration and installation, cabling. Got so burned out I quit. At least these guys look like they have a few people to share the workload.
Dani El - Sorry to hear that you got burned out, I know that illness, it happened to me too, but good on you bro, at least you tried, and your efforts would not have been wasted. ✊🏼✌️🌅
@@Ynotbuildit these days Starlink seems to be a problem solver. Limited coverage still, you'd have to check availability at the correct latitude. I am not sure if there are any other providers for Sat internet other than Hughes. Starlink's low latency and higher speeds will beat Hughes out of the water.
Beautiful people working together to make a difference, to have a purpose, a cause. How can this not inspire all the people within these areas or around the country? I really hope that Google caught wind of this community movement and have donated monies, equipment, technical expertise possibly.
Who are the 2K that gave this a thumbs down & WHY???? Yo MAD RESPECT DETROIT!!!!! This Alabama boy loves you! You go and show the world how its done, God bless you all Shabbat Shalom peace be with you
broadband access across America is poor at best. Yes access in the cities is higher simply because it's profitable. but not everyone lives in the city, or a neighborhood that has access to broadband speed. initiatives such as these help to bridge that gap. as the internet becomes more involved and businesses rely on it to gain customers access becomes an issue. I'm sorry that you live in an area that only allows 2MB. I imagine the difficulties using services such as TH-cam and other streaming services that require higher bandwidth.
For checking email and doing other work related things slow internet is just fine. To think that poor people are being left behind because they don't have 100 speed internet is pathetic. They have tons of other real problems besides if their kids can play GTA 24/7 which is the only real use at home for super fast internet.
Yea I seen the same like unless girls have long hair they might have some but short.. SHe has short hair and some fat chops on the side. Poor Diana she's having a gender identity crisis. Either way good thing your doing diana for the D
JustKillMeSenpai Didn't even notice that, how people look is no issue to me. It was towards the end when she started whining about how because she is a women of color that is what causes her problems that I got turned off. Basically agree with what she is doing, but If you have to pull the feminist card to point out your only detractors, then grow up and realize that life isn't easy for any of us.
This kicks ass. I had no clue this was even possible, let alone legal. But I legit don’t get all the hate about the her calling herself a POC??? Like, how could anyone see this and not realize that this is a racial issue as well as a socioeconomic one? *All of the neighborhoods shown in the video are mostly, if not exclusively, black and internet providers are only giving them 10mbs.* From the way I see it, that’s discrimination.
They are getting what they paid for and only to some one who lives life thinking they deserve something just because they want it does this appear racist.there are no 5 foot 2 inch tall jewish guys enjoying NBA multi million dollar paychecks.i mostly see young black men in that elite class,i can only chalk that up to systemic, institutional racism
Ugh another antifa democrat, it's not a matter of race, it's a matter of infrastructure and socioeconomics. Stop trying to play the race card to take advantage of people like with this "POC" crap.
Another way to communicate is to get a HAM radio license. Sure it is not the internet, but it opens up an amazing world of radio communications, and we get more folks participating in the art and experimental science of radio.
Nero Onnyx .....middle of nowhere kansas has high speed internet..... why don't ghettos in big cities have it? What great creation has come from ghettos? "Really?" Isnt a counterpoint of my statement....and unless you can prove me wrong....you have no point
kalikasurf I saw the nonsense in your comment and I could not resist to show its incredulity. Ghettos like Compton have internet, inner chicago has internet too. Rural areas of South Carolina have no internet, something they are tryint to find ways to improve. Which proves your statement wrong. The thought of your comment is as hilarious as they come.
Wow! I had no idea the depth of decay and rebound back home (Detroit). And yet again, Detroit shows it's resiliency and re-unification as communities to rise up. I love Detroit! God bless!
Disapointed in the ignorance coming from the comment section. So you're just going to ignore the positive work shes doing and talk bad about her appearance? Just because she doesn't fit the mainstream ideal of feminine beauty. Who cares what she looks like? Woman: Here's a solution to level the playing field for people in Detroit facing socio-economic injustice. Internet trolls: 🤪 Yeah but sideburns. 🙄
I'm disappointed too, by the idiots on this thread. This feels like the most exciting, essential internet project in the world today, and this is what they have to say?!?
kalikasurf well fcc is bout to charge an arm and a leg to use it. Why not actually learn how to do this so big companies can stop trying to get more money out of us
Its because they really don't care, they just stop by and negatively comment so they feel like they're special. Its just sad that our country is heading where the rest of the world has already been.
Have you all thought about using scientific atlanta technology and starting a cable business? Very inspirational. I work for a cable company. If you guys have questions feel free to ask.
That is part of Cisco and all they make are modems. Putting in a coaxial cable network would be a more expensive venture when comparing return on investment. point to point and jump-route is the best way to go since you need only one drop into fiber and the rest is trans-repeat-receive with all the infrastructure literally costing nothing since it is wireless. Buy a modem and antenna and you are on. Also cable is even worse than dsl when it comes to a mass share connection since once you start to get several people all on the same connection it will bottleneck like crazy.
vilerabbit well that means if they want to limit throttling they would need to run EVEN more fiber for nodes which would drive the cost higher so whatever way you split it centimeter wave is still cheaper than running physical infrastructure.
I am Anna Zgambo of Zambia. I am building my own Internet and I have good reasons why this activity is important. Self-reliance is key for universal prosperity to flourish here.
All of you in the 3rd world that are here complaining about having 2mb where you live: we're sorry, and you should do something about it to bridge the gap. Unless 2mb will fit your business and economical needs, do something about it. That's what these folks are doing. they're taking action. be proud of these black folks. Nobody here in the video is saying that this is about minorities being superior, and having a bigger need for accessible high speed, this is about equality in general, regardless of race or color in Detroit. Detroit is a mess and needs more of these young people inspiring folks to do better in their communities. This is great work they are doing and this is not your place to mansplain about your unfortunately awful domestic internet in your country. You can go to the videos where google scientists are boasting terabyte speeds on their servers at their offices for that one. Thank you.
That's fair, but remember, they can do the things they do because its America, in the middle east where almost everything is a police state and or government run, u don't have the luxury of changing anything. You just say keep ur head down and mind ur business. This video is amazing I wish we were capable of change over here. But nope we just confirm the stereotype and act like the inbreds we are lol. We tried change (Arab spring) nothing happened, things got worse and police state got more power. That's why the middle east is stagnant. The ironic part is that what's keeping us back is Religious Fanaticism and military oppression, but ironically its also what's keeping it together from falling apart. Like say? A tightly sealed vacuum of cluster fuck lol, its ok tho. Really. Memes don't need high-speed internet and we got those to cope with all of out troubles from here on yonder (always wanted to use that word, hope I did it right)
they said there was some security, i suspect the individual computers or routers for the buldings have their own firewalls. I would do that or that same reason. the decentralization is a bonus IMO.
It does my heart good to see people actively seeking ways to improve society. That does not involve a goal of becoming rich. Just rich in networking of friendship and sharing. Helping each other is the key to getting out from under the thumb of big money companies.
Because middle of nowhere kansas, the installers aren't being robbed and having material stolen from their trucks while they make service calls. Plus, anything that is recyclable...... its gets gone in a hurry.
I am an IT freelancer and I used Aruba on a project a few years back but when my client bought out a competitor's warehouse they had Ubiquiti throughout the same freezer/warehouse and it worked fine for a fraction of the price.
Awesome. I am running a similar programme here in Mombasa, Kenya. We are connecting the unconnected and the marginalized people. Cheers to the last mile connectivity. Internet connection is a human right.
First, identify the main internet provider in your area with a business package. Get connected then resale the internet at affordable rates by point to point connection.
I live in a rural area so the only internet connection I have is my phone. And we didn't have reliable cellphone service for a long time because a lot of companies didn't cover the area. I heard a lot of people on the internet complain about at&t but they where the first company to cover my area and where the only one here for years. Home internet is costly here because you have to pay for the cable for a few miles to get to your house Or get satellite all options are crazy.
Yeah 100mb/s from UK. You know Sweden has the second fastest internet on average also? Not sure why you think Europe have it bad. Most of Europe don't.
this video just compelled me to donate. I wish I could help more. As a Metro-Detroiter I love the city that is the epicenter of everything. the progress that detroit has seen towards rebuilding and recovering has been amazing and for this group to be doing this work is amazing. I am fortunate enough to afford and to have the services offered at my suburban home that these folks do not. the least I can do is donate to the people who are helping those who corporations ignore.
Feel you bro. Even I am grateful enough to have around 300-400 kbps and the most fastest we can get is 2 MB . Heck, sometimes, for days we can only get 50 to 80 kbps due to weather.
Malaysia, which is just beside Singapore, which is also about to enter second world country by economy. And yet, internet pretty much a bit of jackass.
During its prosperity the fall began in the 50s in this fashion. After slavery many African American communities had become wealthy from Not being allowed to spend their money in white businesses and being used to extremely hard work on farms. Many of African Americans moved up north to areas like Detroit to avoid the massive lynchings, rape and burnings in the southern states that were forced to free them. In the early forties they were met with violent riots (1942) by those already living in Detroit who did so to scare them back to the south. They beganto build businesses in Detroit. The most prominent area of African American businesses was on Hastings St. Being met with resistance eventually they succeeded in closing all of the African American businesses by building the Chrysler freeway right through through Hastings street. After the assassination of the majority of African American leaders of the 1960s like Pastor Dr. Martin Luther King and the locking up and deportation of the others like Marcus Garvey and Nelson Mandela a new generation of African Americans less peaceful over the decades of after slavery violence grew. Tension grew the black panther party started to police the police who were out of control with racial violence, the panther party started school lunch programs and supervised police stops meeting them with force if they began to try to kill or beast unjustifyably anyone. Tensions continued to grow until a racial fight broke out on belle isle and on 12st street between young white hacklers and young blacks on edge. 1800 blacks were killed by police in the riot and many white businesses began to be torched on 12th st. After which what was called "white flight" occurred where houses were being sold for next to nothing and little homes being built in the suburbs as fast as possible where most of the whites left and blacks moved in not because of racism but because they couldn't afford the suburbs anymore after rent and rates increased with whites moving in and large houses in the city center became cheap in Detroit as they would value property based on whether it was all white or had blacks or other ethnicities in the community. Remember during that time racial discrimination in the workforce was at an all time high so if you were black unless you owned a business you were poor and they got rid of most of the cities' black business owners. In retaliation there was a huge hike in kkk membership in upper Michigan and in the police force thus statistically the police must have had a large percentage of kkk members. A drug that anyone could make who couldn't afford cocaine but was more addictive was engineered called crack. A group of police known as STRESS (Idk the full words) began to push crack in the inner cities even forcing it on people. The same thing that happened in China when Europe forced opium there that caused them to build a wall and kill everyone not Chinese occurred in the inner city. Detroit turned from a city where in the middle of the night if you saw a group of black men on the corner they were singing in harmony doo-wops in the street light into a city with all of the effects of drug addicts (theft, prostitution, murder, gangs, etc. the same thing happened in China when they brought opium and the same thing is happening meth communities only less because they don't call them thugs but addicts and they still can get jobs and help). The residents elected the first black mayor, Coleman A. Young, who fought against stress and other activities of the police and kkk, but since the news were fed their info from police and from the same families as kkk members, suburbanite propoganda began against the city and mayor further dividing the state racially with the residents cheering mayor Young for getting rid of STRESS and stopping racist police violence while the suburbanites believing he was a drug lord and whatever else the police and news anchors said about him. Mayor Young developed COBO hall the people mover and other economic successes and the city began to return until the 3 axis robot was invented and 70% of UAW workers were laid off which was a huge percentage of the cities' income. Also suburbanite propoganda and the effects of crack and the music culture that came from crack (trap music and gangster rap music made about the lifestyle) caused businesses to very rarely hire blacks who as a result couldn't buy homes and blight began. You could look at the freeways all coming into the city in the morning and leaving in the evening and 90% were suburbanites. So Detroit became a cow that everyone drank from except her own calves then those drinking complained about how sickly she and her calves looked though they were the ones drinking all her milk and water and taking all of her grass. Hundreds of millions of payroll dollars poured into the suburban communities making them beautiful but stripping Detroit further. The news blamed the Detroit mayors but Kwame K didn't steal $150 million plus the hundreds of millions on surplus. That extreme deficit all went to the suburban communities through hiring discrimination and loss of industry to automation. The first white mayor in 20 years was elected Mayor Mike Duggan by the African American community after President Obama was elected by the European American citizenry after which all news propoganda against Detroit mayors finally ceased. Investors poured billions into Detroit in support of the new mayor billions that they withheld before and everyone and their mothet came to Detroit to help Mayor Duggan people who wouldn't help before but only get jobs and leave complaining about Mexicans and Chinese taking US jobs while doing the exact thing to Detroit. You wouldn't hear anything negative about Duggan even when abandoned homes stopped being torn down which three previous mayor's did and those buildings then collapsing on walkways and literally the neighborhood having a compete blind eye turned on them to the point of extreme decay, the news still perfumed his farts even when nearly $200 million dollars of Detroit tax payer money to tear down abandoned homes was taken from the tax payers and given to billionaires to build the Caesars arena and the Pistons stadium though not city owned properties.

The news blamed the Detroit mayors but Kwame K didn't steal $150million plus the hundreds of millions on surplus. That extreme deficit all went to the suburban communities through hiring discrimination and loss of industry to automation. The first white mayor in 20 years was elected Mayor Mike Duggan but the African American community after President Obama was elected by the European American citizenry after which all news propoganda ceased. Investors poured billions into Detroit in support of the new mayor billionsthat they withheld before and everyone and their momma came to Detroit to help Mayor Duggan who wouldn't help before only hurt. You wouldn't hear anything negative about Duggan even when abandoned homes stopped being torn down which three previous mayor's did and those buildings then collapsing on walkways and literally the neighborhood having a compete blind eye turned on him the news still perfumed his farts even when then money tear down abandoned homes was taken from the tax payers and given to billionaires to build the Caesars arena and the pistons stadium. Your comment is proof since you got that thought from your racist patents and the news who got their angle the same way. You don't even know what happened but you blurry out crap that makes people not get hired and thus get all of the problems I their communities associated with high unemployment in any ethnicity. Throttling Internet. The ISP’s will only create infrastructure where governments (townships, cities, counties, state, and federal) will spend the money. There is no Net Neutrality... the cost of operations to run an ISP are no where near the amount charged to customers. The cost of building the infrastructure will be recuperated in less than 3 years, after that it’s a cash cow.... and we become the big old moo’er feeding the ISP’s.
This is a great video, full of great people that are on to great things! I have an idea though. Try to invest in low frequency satellite hardware, so you can spread your hubs farther, and connect more people. Also, look into MIMO technology. This will increase the bandwidth, and backend of the network, so it doesn’t suffer from network congestion.

To Save Net Neutrality, We Must Build Our Own Internet
Canadian_Syrup I was thinking of that ever since they repealed Net Neutrality. That's the answer fam, I'm sure off it

In the early 2000's my high school friends in our small town created a private network for gaming, before the internet was fast enough for games like Quake. We set up wireless transmitters and relays between our houses that spanned miles. It was a super fun project.
Did you all expound upon that network? How can you be contacted?
DivaLyri Brazil He cannot be contacted because he's lying. His friends used to play via LAN like the rest of us. Nobody in their right mind would set up wireless transmitters spanning miles just to play games.
Yes no one would build a massive network just to play games, that's why the data centers for Xbox Live, PSN, Steam, twitch, Nintendo don't exist.

This is not IT work. This is easy work to setup internet.... But they are doing a nice job.
+Kyle Preiksa
"These people are learning valuable skills"
Yes I agree.
"that they could use to work for any IT firm as network engineers"
No...
"Also, they are deploying a very cool network technology"
Not sure why you think it's cool... But ok?
"which is incredibly cheap to deploy and maintain compared to traditional fiber or copper networks."
It's actually a bit more expensive as a whole, depending on what metrics you use to evaluate it. What it is good for is to cut out the rights of ways that can make wired networks expensive. Maintenance on wired networks is not all that expensive it's laying it and finding its way through the city that is.
"I hope that their network is engineered well enough to grow to more neighborhoods and to have enough bandwidth to go around."
The technology that this is based on means they only have a certain area they can work in.

Spewing a bunch of conservative "the free hand of the market knows what's best for you" rhetoric with no substantive examples isn't really going to cut it anymore for me, not when I used to vote for them and realized how much they betrayed my interests they said they would represent once in office with bad, incompetent governance that had way more scandal and corruption to it than any previous government.
lmao your statement is wrong and it shouldn't be free
This is great community work.
What to give internet to people that don't pay the bills. someone has to pay for it
the church pays for it..all those WAPs hop back to the church which serves as that areas hub, the church pays for their circuits from an ISP.

broadband access across America is poor at best.

Not feasible, millimeter wave technology is just way more cost effective and unrestricted.
Depends on bandwidth usage and space allocated to each modem in the network.
Marshall Smith™ you don’t even need a modem just a router/gateway and a PoE injector. So it’s even cheaper than cabling
vilerabbit well that means if they want to limit throttling they would need to run EVEN more fiber for nodes which would drive the cost higher so whatever way you split it centimeter wave is still cheaper than running physical infrastructure.
I am Anna Zgambo of Zambia. I am building my own Internet and I have good reasons why this activity is important. Self-reliance is key for universal prosperity to flourish here.
this is super cool! i love what youre doing keep on doing so :)
When AT&T cuts u off
Having worked for at and t, I worked in Detroit back a few years ago. I was splicing cable for Uverse all over the place, wtf?
I want to applaud all of the people showcased in this video. I am amazed by what you are doing. Empowering yourself and others.
That tech lady has the most soothing voice I've ever heard. I could listen to her all day..
I love this. What brilliant, resourceful people.
Your city is actually a entraprenuers dream so many things young people can do to start their own businesses
Being broke and unemployed is the perfect entrepreneur incubator!
Wow I just learned a few things I didn't know. (But that's my motto ) " You Learn something New Everyday " .
Thats great that people are doing this. Everyone should have access to the internet.
Really. Memes don't need high-speed internet and we got those to cope with all of out troubles from here on yonder (always wanted to use that word, hope I did it right)
In my city most people don't have wifi.
EII internet everywhere! Mad props to the can-do efforts of regular people.
kwyjibo YAY props to people stealing bandwidth!
This is a bad idea because there is no firewall or security and it’s decentalized
grey head Can you briefly explain why? What are the consequences?
data being exploited
they said there was some security, i suspect the individual computers or routers for the buldings have their own firewalls. I would do that or that same reason. the decentralization is a bonus IMO.
I'm assuming each home is on its own subnet without transport between each other. I'm not sure, I'd be interested to see how they do it
What are you talking about? They are installing the firewalls. And It is centralized. They network has a single point of failure at the Church.
It does my heart good to see people actively seeking ways to improve society. That does not involve a goal of becoming rich. Just rich in networking of friendship and sharing. Helping each other is the key to getting out from under the thumb of big money companies.
Meanwhile in the middle of Nowhere, Kansas, I have super fast internet. So weird that a city can't do that.
because there broke and no one cares about them
Because middle of nowhere kansas, the installers aren't being robbed and having material stolen from their trucks while they make service calls.
Plus, anything that is recyclable...... its gets gone in a hurry.
This is amazing good job
this is awesome
I am an IT freelancer and I used Aruba on a project a few years back but when my client bought out a competitor's warehouse they had Ubiquiti throughout the same freezer/warehouse and it worked fine for a fraction of the price.
Is that Andy Milonakis?
elciscozamora no that's his sister
Yes
I live in Dallas and I paid around 50 dollars for LTE which only gave me .3 mbps. Then I got spectrum for 20 bucks which gives me 30 mbps.
Tesla would be proud.
Maxx Baker no he would be proud if this was wireless power transmission.. Not high speed Internet..
BTW, WiFi was invented by an Australian.
i'm pretty sure the joke was about tesla's vision of free wireless energy for all, rather than who invented or discovered what.
YES!!!!! You're 100% right! Who the fuck doesn't think this?!?!?!?!
Awesome. I am running a similar programme here in Mombasa, Kenya. We are connecting the unconnected and the marginalized people. Cheers to the last mile connectivity. Internet connection is a human right.
Juma Rashid How can we get to start to connect unconnected and marginalized people here in Nigeria. Internet is not affordable here to a common man!
First, identify the main internet provider in your area with a business package. Get connected then resale the internet at affordable rates by point to point connection.
5:59 the dog 🐶 in the roof chilling looks cool
Where theres a will there's a way
You are not building an internet. You are building a network. Totally different things.
Tom Hardware don’t matter clown THEY BUILDING AND YOU COMMENTING
Semantics semantics
I live in a rural area so the only internet connection I have is my phone. And we didn't have reliable cellphone service for a long time because a lot of companies didn't cover the area. I heard a lot of people on the internet complain about at&t but they where the first company to cover my area and where the only one here for years. Home internet is costly here because you have to pay for the cable for a few miles to get to your house Or get satellite all options are crazy.
" only 10 megabits per seconds " have you tried living in europe vro "
Sierra Vichniassileff jes i have 300 mb/s soo im not complaining and im not supa rich
hell, i have 3mb/s at best, and it's really more than enough lmao
I live in Europe, minimum is 50 megabits.
i have 200kb/sec..... live in denmark
Yeah 100mb/s from UK. You know Sweden has the second fastest internet on average also?
Not sure why you think Europe have it bad. Most of Europe don't.
You guys really need me up there!!!! I can design and build that network right!
Fill Cellaphane cant do it alone lol
DanMan why can’t he? It’ll take a lot of work and money but it can be done.
Fill cellaphane can you direct me to a resource where I can learn about municipal broadband and how to build one.
11:16 "world wide problem", yeah, I guess you can't have "world wide web" without "world wide problem"
this video just compelled me to donate.
Stop being sad with your 10mb : I have 120kbp/s...
Feel you bro. Even I am grateful enough to have around 300-400 kbps and the most fastest we can get is 2 MB . Heck, sometimes, for days we can only get 50 to 80 kbps due to weather.
@@izzfitri6888 Where are you from
Malaysia, which is just beside Singapore, which is also about to enter second world country by economy. And yet, internet pretty much a bit of jackass.
I'll share mine if ur near me
wtf? i get 90-120mb
Detroit was once the most wealthy city in the whole country.
Badr eddin companies left
Badr eddin it was a manufacturing community
@Badr eddin black people happened

Your comment is proof since you got that thought from your racist patents and the news who got their angle the same way. You don't even know what happened but you blurry out crap that makes people not get hired and thus get all of the problems I their communities associated with high unemployment in any ethnicity. You're toxic mentalityis what happened I wouldn't be surprised is you were one if those old Michigan suburbanites.
US is -20 years ago than EU ..., I've got 500Mbs Internet at home provided by fiberoptic direct cable...
Lalasony Cierny That’s Cool.
That way you can get the data pumped right into your head faster eh?
flat data cap
most of US prices for fiber flat are 3x more expnsive than in EU.. my costs are round 10$us for 500Mbs/fiber/flat how about you costs?
You're right. Im Poland 5-10 years ago such connection were quite common. Now 4g is everywhere, without any data limits.
Anyway, I glad sb is doing something to help the lesslucky
how much do you pay for that, here in germany that would beat least! 100$
This is awesome.... I live in Toronto Canada but if I lived in Detroit I would definitely be down to help out with this! Great job keep it up!
Great work
A couple three Mbps is plenty to find a job, check your email, even watch a video real quick if you don't mind 480p ;)
net neutrality
Has nothing to do with this video lol...
It has a lot to do with this video especially when you talk about the brokest City in the United States of America
poorest*. brokest is not a word lmao
Jaden
Not the same thing
This is a great video, full of great people that are on to great things! I have an idea though. Try to invest in low frequency satellite hardware, so you can spread your hubs farther, and connect more people. Also, look into MIMO technology. This will increase the bandwidth, and backend of the network, so it doesn’t suffer from network congestion.
Give you 10 out of 10 yes yes go for it.
The people’s internet and crypto currency needs to be what turns the tides
Is their any way they can get a govt grant for great community work...
That would be awesome
Government grant!? Seriously? That would be the death of it. Don't you know how these things work?
I do CCNA right now and have a ubiquiti network at home. I would love to use my knowledge for such a good purpose like this.
