  • When it comes to the internet, our connections are generally controlled by telecom companies. But a group of people in Detroit is trying to change that. Motherboard met with the members of the Equitable Internet Initiative (EII), a group that is building their own wireless networks from the ground up in order to provide affordable and high-speed internet to prevent the creation of a digital class system.

      All the job opportunities are outside the city. Same for all the good schools.
      This the result of White flight which was created by the government. Detroit is not built like a "city", it has highways cutting right through it that were funded by government, suburbs outside that were subsidized by the government and list goes on.
      This resulted in what some people term as segregation.
      The one who need Jesus are not these poor people, but the one living outside.

    I live in metro Detroit and have a strong interest in networking. I LOVE this. These people are learning valuable skills that they could use to work for any IT firm as network engineers, and they are helping the city’s low income residents have access to the internet, which affords many opportunities. Also, they are deploying a very cool network technology with a WiFi based network, which is incredibly cheap to deploy and maintain compared to traditional fiber or copper networks. I hope that their network is engineered well enough to grow to more neighborhoods and to have enough bandwidth to go around. Also, if Dan Gilbert/Rocket Fiber isn’t already supporting this, that would be good to do.

Keep growing, learning, and resisting young folk, the world is ours. Forget looking up to these false idols and shallow entertainers who are only out for themselves.
      The kaepernicks of the world need to shut up and put up. Use just some of those millions and fund these after school learning centers/hangouts , churches, businesses, gyms, community centers, etc. Bring in teachers of trades, chess, business, motivational/public speaking, real estate, etc. Bring police and community together once a week so the people can form bonds. These entertainers have more capability to make a change, than more than 95percent of the people in the country. Don't be fooled by the B.S. propaganda, because obviously they would rather use their platform for nothing else than attention, it seems.

      "These people are learning valuable skills"
      Yes I agree.
      "that they could use to work for any IT firm as network engineers"
      No... Just no. This kind of work does not translate well to a network engineer. Some of the basics sure, but the actual design and implementation of an actual network in a normal IT field do not. In actuality this kind of work that they are doing now can actually hinder them. How? Those kinds of jobs want people who are fresh and or who learned "the right way". By that I mean learned it in a way that applies to the kinds of jobs that are the norm. Now if they go to school and can re-learn and show that they can apply the new learning? Sure.
      Now what this actually does is help them in the next round of not for profit and maybe non profit types of programs. Other cities around the US, and even across the world can potentially benefit from the way they do things. Especially if they do not have to follow all of the rules and regulations people in the field have to.
      "Also, they are deploying a very cool network technology"
      Not sure why you think it's cool... But ok?
      "which is incredibly cheap to deploy and maintain compared to traditional fiber or copper networks."
      It's actually a bit more expensive as a whole, depending on what metrics you use to evaluate it. What it is good for is to cut out the rights of ways that can make wired networks expensive. Maintenance on wired networks is not all that expensive it's laying it and finding its way through the city that is.
      "I hope that their network is engineered well enough to grow to more neighborhoods and to have enough bandwidth to go around."
      The technology that this is based on means they only have a certain area they can work in. Distance from the source is key, as well as obstacles. In order to go beyond that distance they will need other hubs like the church with fiber and the necessary equipment to branch out. Then you have the limitation of the fiber itself. 1000/1000 is great and all but if you have 100 houses using it simultaneously that's 10/10 if it's proportioned per user. A few houses it will be great but the more that's added the more it needs to be divided up to avoid congestion. Especially at peak times.

      +Admin Assistant, If comcrap doesn't like it... they need to realize that their network runs through places with no cameras on poles that can be climbed. They also don't pay their installers well, so getting them to turn rogue and leak maps of their infrastructure is a given. Then they just send in the goons with scissors, continually, until every paying customer they have cancels their constantly busted-ass service. Really they are just using a bunch of Ubiquiti Networks products and performing the job of a typical rural WISP... Good for them. I'm impressed they are utilizing a gigabit fiber for the main line, that makes it all worth it. Otherwise they would not be capable of doing this on a business class cable connection. Too many devices. They will probably become their own ISP in the area once they get big enough and actually could eventually run cable or get some of those fiber lines reactivated on their own accord.

      Beautiful ‘ASH’ trees. They won’t be there for long, though. All the ash trees on my property, and the surrounding area, have died. (90 miles s/w of Chicago) Once the ‘ash-borer’ beetle arrives in that area, those trees will be toast. It’s a shame, too, because they’re some really nice old trees. They provide shade for houses and help keep cooling costs down.

    The internet should be public infrastructure with how interconnected our world is now into the economic activity of our lives, it being privately owned for profit driven is the real problem. Its like as if your highways and the connecting roads are all private, with for profit tolls and highway thieves jamming them all up - how much business and other human activity would actually get done if those weren't publicly owned, protected, maintained, and [indiscriminately] used?

    • @jerrywhidby5259
      @jerrywhidby5259 6 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      CanadianWolverine You say that, but the internet being privatized has driven more research into making it faster and more reliable. The government is where things go to stagnate. I guarantee you that there would not be anymore innovations produced in that industry if you had your wish. Also anything the government controls it regulates to death and your privacy is suspect.

    • @CanadianWolverine
      @CanadianWolverine 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      You don't really understand how many times regulatory bodies have had to slap the wrists of privatized ISPs do you as they engage in anti-consumerist practices to further their bottom line? Or the number of times seeking the lowest bidder and anti-union practices has resulted in technicians who are dangerous to traffic, the public, and provide poorer service to their customers? Not only that but the number of times where our privacy is suspect in private hands because they turn around and sell your private information to others. Spewing a bunch of conservative "the free hand of the market knows what's best for you" rhetoric with no substantive examples isn't really going to cut it anymore for me, not when I used to vote for them and realized how much they betrayed my interests they said they would represent once in office with bad, incompetent governance that had way more scandal and corruption to it than any previous government.

      So you want the government to regulate our internet instead of ISP's? im not saying I agree or disagree but how in the world are the common people going to lay fiber lines 40 fathoms under the sea or maintain 24/7 365 uptime in an infrastructure 99% of the world population can even understand how it works? their are only a couple thousand CCIE's in the world and 8 cisco architects in existence keep in mind.
      there is enough CCNPs and CCNAs around but why would they work for a public infrastructure that isnt going to afford to pay them shit for their work, also maintenance of the equipment, data centers, data center techs, installers etc

    • @CanadianWolverine
      @CanadianWolverine 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's a bizarre argument to make, that the government pays crap, considering that in my own local experience, government jobs are easily among the best paid and that the infrastructure in the vast majority is bought and paid for by the government contracts then sold to the privately run company to distribute to the customers. Most fibre / cable laid by ISPs is often just at the very end, from the street to the home. Private interests often do very little of the macro infrastructure expansion or upgrades because the cost/benefit analysis doesn't make sense to them, and is often why infrastructure in private hands falls into disrepair and doesn't see any upgrading.

      broadband access across America is poor at best. Yes access in the cities is higher simply because it's profitable. but not everyone lives in the city, or a neighborhood that has access to broadband speed. initiatives such as these help to bridge that gap. as the internet becomes more involved and businesses rely on it to gain customers access becomes an issue. I'm sorry that you live in an area that only allows 2MB. I imagine the difficulties using services such as TH-cam and other streaming services that require higher bandwidth.

    Wow, this is truly amazing, absolutely inspiring. I became geeked about this the first time I heard about helping areas of Detroit gain accessibility to the internet. I have a strong general knowledge of the labor and configuration of the equipment your organization uses. I actually have several Ubiquiti products I am actively selling for less than 50% of the manufacturers/dealers price. I am excited about what the goal and objective is and providing something most of us take for granted and giving it to individuals who need this access, for knowledge, for the power of that knowledge at your fingertips. Its essential to keeping up with instant information access. I want to be a part of this movement. I am located in Warren 12 mile and Schoenherr but native to Harper Woods for 18 years of my life. I've worked IP security cameras and alarms in Detroit for the past 4-5 years. I've traveled the country providing video analytics with Ubiquiti Antennas, eliminating the cost of trenching huge scrap yard properties to provide perimeter video detection with alerting municipal services appropriately, a fire the fire department, someone jump the fence? The police, this service provides two step verification which in extreme circumstances of a rough neighborhood with limited resources to municipal services, this two step verification brings these clients need to the top of the list for municipal services to show up in a timely manner because its live on video and it trips an alarm and the monitoring company works with the municipal services to effectively locate a thief on the property or a location of a fire with thermal imaging which helps the fire department be proactive instead of just reacting after its potentially too late. If I could be of assistance, a hired helping hand, I have been out of the field for 12 months now, but fully equipped to hit the ground running and be self sufficient or a great force/asset to be part of a team to have such a rewarding experience everyday helping people gain access, obtaining knowledge, and have equal power to have instant knowledge to gain independence, defend themselves, potentially generate income depending on how driven these unfortunate individuals are. There is so much hidden talent in these bad neighborhoods without a way to reach out, be seen and heard. Get the recognition they deserve. I've been looking for something I can wake up everyday and do something I'm passionate about. I believe this could be that opportunity if I was given the chance to help achieve the goal that is being taught to achieve.

      The work is great, no doubt there, but they over dramatized it for my taste. And the identity politics had to find a way into this as well of course. Anyway, they organize and do a good job as it seems, that's great.

    • @walperstyle
      @walperstyle 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Activism doesn't cause things to happen, capitalism does. THese people are learning skills and building the future they want. They could get there faster if the government nazi regulations got out of the way and let them build more.

    • @pandaabro5484
      @pandaabro5484 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      So anarchy?? I'm not sure that would solve more problems than it creates. I'm for maximum freedom too, but I guess we need some form of government to regulate.

    • @walperstyle
      @walperstyle 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Anarchy? What do you think these people are doing? I'm not an anarchist by any means, but Detroit has no tax revenue anymore, so these communities are creating their future... that is 'without rulers'. ...funny actually very anarchist. Actually, it's more anarcho capitalist than anarcho communist. Either way, look at all those buildings abandoned... ask yourself why people cant easily start a business?

    • @pandaabro5484
      @pandaabro5484 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's why there are question marks, I thought you might be a anarchist, considering your... words.. I'm so stupid. I just realized you wrote "capitalism does". For some reason I ended up thinking you meant the exact opposite. What kind of brain fart is this... sry.

    This kicks ass. I had no clue this was even possible, let alone legal. But I legit don’t get all the hate about the her calling herself a POC??? Like, how could anyone see this and not realize that this is a racial issue as well as a socioeconomic one? *All of the neighborhoods shown in the video are mostly, if not exclusively, black and internet providers are only giving them 10mbs.* From the way I see it, that’s discrimination.

    • @thyhead
      @thyhead 6 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      The internet providers are willing to supply them with whatever they are willing to pay for. Because capitalism. Lol

    • @bruceclark5627
      @bruceclark5627 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      They are getting what they paid for and only to some one who lives life thinking they deserve something just because they want it does this appear racist.there are no 5 foot 2 inch tall jewish guys enjoying NBA multi million dollar paychecks.i mostly see young black men in that elite class,i can only chalk that up to systemic,institutional racism

      Ugh another antifa democrat, it's not a matter of race, it's a matter of infrastructure and socioeconomics. Stop trying to play the race card to take advantage of people like with this "POC" crap.

      kalikasurf I saw the nonsense in your comment and I could not resist to show its incredulity. Ghettos like Compton have internet, inner chicago has internet too. Rural areas of South Carolina have no internet, something they are tryint to find ways to improve. Which proves your statement wrong. The thought of your comment is as hilarious as they come.

      David Bryant .. No they don't.. there is a lot of rungs missing on the financial ladder at the bottom. One quick example.. poor area schools don't have as good teachers as ones in a higher class area do...and also.. it is a shame to say but most people do judge a book by the cover and that is a major hurdle poor people have to contend with..

      Not feasible, millimeter wave technology is just way more cost effective and unrestricted.

    • @marshallallensmith
      @marshallallensmith 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That is part of Cisco and all they make are modems. Putting in a coaxial cable network would be a more expensive venture when comparing return on investment. point to point and jump-route is the best way to go since you need only one drop into fiber and the rest is trans-repeat-receive with all the infrastructure literally costing nothing since it is wireless. Buy a modem and antenna and you are on. Also cable is even worse than dsl when it comes to a mass share connection since once you start to get several people all on the same connection it will bottleneck like crazy.

    • @vilerabbit
      @vilerabbit 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Depends on bandwidth usage and space allocated to each modem in the network.

    • @GeorgeLockwood
      @GeorgeLockwood 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Marshall Smith™ you don’t even need a modem just a router/gateway and a PoE injector. So it’s even cheaper than cabling

    • @GeorgeLockwood
      @GeorgeLockwood 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      vilerabbit well that means if they want to limit throttling they would need to run EVEN more fiber for nodes which would drive the cost higher so whatever way you split it centimeter wave is still cheaper than running physical infrastructure.
