      Hello there dear Michael. I'm not from USA. I'm from Algeria and I want to attend to Berklee college, and I play violin, piano and guitar and I have my diploma as an musician artist. I tried to email them I finished applying then in the end they asked me to pay only 75$ for finishing. I want to know if I can attend after that or they will ask for some papers like studying in high school or anything? Hope to hear from you soon.
      Thanking you in advance.

    • @MichaelAveryMusic
      @MichaelAveryMusic  7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      No problem! It's totally normal to be nervous, and if you're in 9th grade then you have tons and tons of time to practice and work on your skills. They'll also ask you what you'd like to major in, so if you're a music business or production/engineering major then they won't be as harsh as they would on a performance major. Either way as long as you practice regularly I'm sure you'll be more than fine. Good luck!

    Hey mate, did you audition with just an original piece? I've seen a lot of people talking about playing a short original and a standard? What do you think the way to go is? Thanks!

    • @MichaelAveryMusic
      @MichaelAveryMusic  8 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I auditioned with an original piece and a prepared one that was only a minute or so in length. Generally they want to move quickly since they have many auditions to sift through so it's not as big of a deal as you think. Also, it's only one part of the total audition. In reference to the type of song you should play, definitely play something that falls in line with your preferences and showcases your ability. I played an Animals as Leaders tune since I really enjoy their music and feel they have a huge influence on my style. For instance, if you were into grunge rock then I would suggest a Pearl Jam or Nirvana song. They'd rather see you perform something you can pull off easily than struggle through something that is clearly above your ability.

    Hey! so I am currently in the process of applying, and have scheduled an audition (I am auditioning on piano). I am looking at either going into Contemporary Writing and Production or Film Scoring, and I am a bit nervous about my audition. While my talent ultimately resides in my production and writing skills, I am a bit worried about my audition because I am not the best pianist or performer out there. I don't often play other peoples music, as I am often improvising and coming up with my own musical ideas. What would you recommend I practice in order to properly prepare for my audition? I am not totally sure what I should pick as a song choice. I have been practicing my blues improvising and am not too worried about that part of the audition, however I am a bit nervous about the sight reading and melodic call and response. Any good resources to practice from?
    Also, since I work mostly with composing my own music, would it be wise to perform one of my originals for the audition, or would it be better to find a piece to play that better showcases my piano playing abilities? I am worried that my song choice might make or break my audition.
    Any help would be greatly appreciated, I am very nervous but also excited about auditioning, it has been a dream of mine to go to Berklee :)
    All the best,
    Chris

    • @MichaelAveryMusic
      @MichaelAveryMusic  8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      On performing- I believe they will ask you which major you're interested in. The best advice I can give for that is to be confident and highlight your strengths in any way possible.
      On sight reading- I didn't know how to read a single note for my audition, in fact I distinctly remember being told to come in after one bar and not knowing how long a bar was, The person running the audition in a rather exasperated tone explained to me that a bar was four beats. So don't worry, things can go wrong and you'll still be okay.
      On melodic call and response- I would study learning solfege, which will also give you a head start because you're required to learn solfege as part of Berklee's ear training curriculum. Once you become familiar with the syllables and their corresponding notes within scales, it makes things a lot easier to decipher and translate into your own playing.
      On your prepared piece- Play whatever you feel most comfortable with, and whatever embodies you as a musician. I got accepted playing an original song, as did many of my peers. It's better to play something that you can absolutely rock than to play something that you feel is "flashier" but may not highlight your skills as well.
      In general, it's probably going to be a lot easier than you're expecting. Try to relax and stay focused, and I'm sure your nerves will disappear after a few seconds. Hope this was helpful, good luck!

    • @chrisbrocato9871
      @chrisbrocato9871 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thank you so much for the excellent response. Definitely helped alleviate a lot of my fears and questions about the audition haha, not as scared about my poor sight reading abilities now. I have a decent understanding of how to read music, I'm just not one of those kids who can just glance at it once and play it through perfectly the first time.
      Luckily I was in chorus in high school, so I have a decent understanding of solfege, I will definitely be practicing that more.
      I think I will probably go with an original, and then I will probably pick a cover as a secondary/back up piece. Just not totally sure what I would cover yet :P
      Thanks again for the response!! Means a lot!

      Hi, I just had my Berklee audition yesterday, played Claire de lune for my prepared piece, before i started my performance, my school maintenance staffs came in so i wasted 15 sec to actually start. During the piece there was one bit I paused longer than it should have(like a second longer) and it sounded like I was looking for the notes, and towards the end I hit a wrong note but I kept playing without stopping. Someone told me the prepared piece is the most important section and I think I messed it up! and during the chords recognition section they played me a diminished chord and I got diminished at first but then I changed my mind to augmented...... and for the 7th chords they played a minor 7th but I said minor major 7th instead..... like what was I doing......
      For the rhythm clapping section they gave me approximately 10 rhythms to clap back but toward the end I think I got some of the rhythms wrong because they were really long. improv section they let me choose a track to improvise over, I have messed it up completely I don't know how to improvise that they stopped me midway, then it comes to the sight reading one they gave me sight reading No.1 and No.3, I sort of did fine for No.1, then they asked me to do No.3, I didn't do as well as No.3 I got most of the notes right, but not the rhythm.....
      And lastly, the interview, it was pretty chill, we were just chatting basically.
      I thought I did fine right after the audition,but now I keep thinking about it, I think I have messed it up and I am having a really bad headache..... What do you think? I'm so sorry to bother you, but I am really really stressed....
