    Yes, the War Doctor was regenerating into Eccleston's Ninth Doctor. It's not as clear on screen as it might be, as Christopher Eccleston declined to be involved with the 50th anniversary due to his past bad experience with the BBC as well as for other reasons, so they had to make do with existing footage which limited the production team's options.
    I don't believe that Justin's interpretation of events is correct. My understanding of what happened isn't that a new timeline was created by changed actions. What actually happened (as I understand it) was that the Doctor had always misunderstood what had happened. He'd remembered stealing the weapon with the intention of using it, and then his regenerated self came to in a universe in which the Time War had come to an end and (seemingly) there were no more Daleks or Time Lords; his memory was missing from his interaction with is other two selves, so he naturally assumed that he'd killed both races in line with his earlier intention. To me, this is a clever retcon, because it preserves the truth of the Ninth Doctor's survivor's guilt. Nothing has changed except that the truth of what really happened has been revealed to the audience, the Eleventh Doctor, and his companion.
    Steven Moffat has said that the writing of this special episode was hugely stressful. It was unclear whether Eccleston could be convinced to be involved (he did actually meet up with Moffat to discuss it), he wasn't sure if fans and indeed the other writers would like the idea of a War Doctor, and he was also having to deal with BBC executives for whom the special was A Big Thing and who therefore were sticking their noses into it all. Also, Matt Smith's existing contract expired with "The Name of the Doctor", so it wasn't even clear whether he could be involved! Yet despite having had to rethink the episode multiple times, the end result works brilliantly in my view.

    • @WhyOhWhyPhi
      @WhyOhWhyPhi  ปีที่แล้ว +13

      It doesn't surprise me that the BBC was so nosy with this one, both from a standpoint of them wanting to protect their IP, but also wanting to be too hands on. Which in the entertainment field usually means bad things. But not for this thankfully.
      Sounds like Moffat had a lot of unknown variables to balance around. It gives context to a lot of what and why Season 7B was the way it was. But there was no way we could have known that without spoilers :P
      Overall I still think Moffat did a bang up job on this one, and did right by the anniversary.

      From my understanding they actually changed time when they saved Gallifrey, because before The Doctor did die on Trenzalore, then that future changed.

  • @KeithAndrewPGbiz
    @KeithAndrewPGbiz ปีที่แล้ว +9

    The 50th is perhaps Moffat's greatest achievement, if not his best episode. Tying all these things together and balancing #10 and #11 is so difficult and he pulls it off. The reason people got on your case about going after doctor #10 is because, as John Hurt illustrates, the show is always self aware. Sometimes I would gently suggest you take things a little too seriously. :-) Also, I love Clara in this episode. She's the heart. Her scene with John Hurt is brilliant.

  • @zaphod2505

    If you go back to season 1 with Christopher Eccelston there's a scene when he first goes to Rose's apartment where he sees himself in the mirror for the first time. Since the war doctor regenerated into the eccleston character that means episode 1 took place very shortly after the events in the 50th anniversary or he just went a really long time without ever looking in a mirror.

    • @ms.antithesis
      @ms.antithesis ปีที่แล้ว +1

      no that's just not true, it's a common piece of fandom misinformation that comes from reading a scene wrong.
      the clide scene later in the episode proves there was a decent ammount of time before rose.
      the 50th itself calls the war doctor 800 and something. emplying lower down in the 800's. and 9 by rose calls himself 900.
      and basically all expanded media agrees there was a signfiicant legnth of time before rose.
      commenting on his ears doesn't mean that at all, it was just a reference to the 4th doctor commenting on his nose in Robot. There's far more evidence counting this theory than the 1 joke used to substantiate it. when basically all dr who media disagrees with the idea he was recently regenerated in rose. INCLUDING ROSE.
      so why people keep saying it like it's definitive canon when it's about as canon as those "rory was the master" theories from series 5. is beyond me. please stop spreading barely substantiated theories that got disproved by the show like facts...

    • @Jet-fighter

      @@ms.antithesis ...what on earth makes you think that the time came before Rose? Surely it makes much more sense that there was time between him leaving Rose and coming back to her during the episode?
      Also, explaining it as "It's a reference" doesn't make any sense in universe. Sure, we might get that. But the Doctor isn't doing a joke for the audience. Sure, that's the Doylist interpretation, and a correct one. But I really don't think the Doctor was just making a joke to himself. The decades of travel between leaving Rose and coming back to her makes more sense to me.

    • @ms.antithesis

      I literally explained the evidence in the replies
      -big finish and the dr who books range believe there's time before rose, intact the entire 9th doctor audio series takes place before rose
      -clive showd photos of the doctor without rose over a significant period of adventures spring Rose.
      -the 50th calls the war doctor 800, the 9th doctor calls himself 900 in rose
      -the doctor shows no signs of post regeneration madness like EVERY OTHER regeneration has had.
      - t
      - The only "evidence" that rose is a post regeneration story is that he looks at his ears and comments on them.. which isn't really evidence given
      A) the first few episodes of the revival have a lot of dropped plot points. Remember the covers ability to slow down time in end of the world?
      B) That in no way confirms the theory that EVERY piece of official media disagrees with.
      So many people take that one line as confirmation.. when there's so much confirmation it isn't.
      Also the idea it's between the tardis flying off and rose entering.. I don't buy, you don't have 100 years where nothing changes whatsoever off camera. As opposed to the much more reasonable logic thay 100 years had already occurred before rose, as this doctor seems settled into his incarnation already.

    Just as a polite ‘FYI’, fellas - regarding your comment about both the Zygons in this story and the Great Intelligence previously as having not realised their potential, both are taken from the original ‘classic’ series and as such those who have watched the old shows have already seen those potentials fulfilled, since in ‘Nu-Who’ we’re actually seeing both from earlier times in their established histories.

The very best ones around are those that take a critical-eyed view at this show, and I always find the two of you very much take this approach, which for me means you live the full experience in a somewhat similar manner to how the programme’s original British audience/fandom did.

    I’m glad that you liked the special! I remember watching it as a teenager when it came out 10 years ago. This episode was a great chance for Doctor Who to poke a bit of fun at itself (Tenth Doctor gets kissed a lot, Eleventh flaps his hands about) but also a very nice emotional moment for the whole show. About their ages: the Eleventh Doctor right now is about 1200 years old. The War Doctor is about 800, and the Tenth is a little over 900.
    I have a little theory that The Doctor is a lot older than they claim to be, due to inconsistencies in their age. The 7th Doctor claims to be 950 in one of his early stories and is visibly older when he regenerates in the movie, so my theory is that when he became The War Doctor he “reset” his age, meaning that the War Doctor has been in that face for 800 years, which is why he regenerates from old age at the end of the episode.

    I've enjoyed watching the reaction with you as you have such a unique perspective, even though my favourite doctor is ten/David Tennant. Somehow you manage to find a way to be critical without being hard to watch, which is so rare. The reason why I love ten so much is yes, nostalgia - he was my doctor but also because he is atypically human. He really experiences the range of the human experience, hubris and whimsy and rage and joy. He allows himself to love, flirt and be fickle and ultimately that's why his time is so tragic because he trys to be something the can't really be. After nine he had Rose and kind of got his mojo back and tried to be swashbuckling because he was clever, he was in love, and the universe says no - this isn't your story. Even the arrogance, or some could say confidence most of the time, is punished when it crosses a line i.e midnight, waters of mars 'time lord victorious'. It's interesting the idea is often circulated of the doctor being born into war, born into a specific circumstance - tenth doctor was born into love - an act of love for Rose and it came to define him.
    I get a little emo thinking about it, that he get the shortest life of any doctor after nine and he's almost the doctor that flew close to the sun. He's like I am brilliant and I can be in love and every time he gets thwarted + Tennants performance is beautiful. I think Matt Smith is incredible too, and the next one really is fab also.Honestly the run of 9-12 is kind of perfect. Anyway hope you keep on enjoying!

    Yes, the next one is still called the 12th Doctor. I was going to be all pedantic about it and start calling them by their apparent actual ordering, but then I saw something where Matt Smith was saying how much he enjoyed being the 11th Doctor as he really liked the word 'eleven', so I cut that out. That's a good enough reason to keep the traditional ordering for me. 😀

I mean this was a huge event at the time and this episode was played in movie theatres and simultaneously transmitted in various countries in the world. Everything that year on the BBC was Doctor Who from episodes of the weakest link to the BBC ident logos etc. Just to say Philip is and has been absolutely correct with how tenant’s portrayal has been problematic at times for some. In fact the war doctor was a device to show a classic doctors view of the new show ? “Are you having a midlife crisis?” “ Why are you speaking like children ?” …. Because the classic show didn’t have any of the crying and kissing. Glad you liked it and I have a feeling that the next Doctor will be your Doctor. He’s what you’ve both been waiting for.

    I grow more fond of this story very time I see it. Several points - marrying the Queen of England would not make the Doctor King (the reason why Prince Philip was not a king), and Queen Elizabeth I, as Head of the Church of England, would know that weddings are not legal (until about 10 years ago) if held in the open air. Wedding were only legal if held inside a consecrated building. The worst thing about both points is that people believe them because it happened in Doctor Who.

    • @andrewgwilliam4831
      @andrewgwilliam4831 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      That's not actually true about marriages in England in the medieval and early modern periods. Although its focus is on the two centuries following the Restoration, Lawrence Stone's "Uncertain Unions and Broken Lives" provides some fascinating insight into the theory and practice of marriage in England before legislative reform began to give us the system we're familiar with today. "It is not too much to say that the marriage law as it operated in practice in England from the fourteenth to the nineteenth century was a mess. [...] The church was satisfied by a mere verbal contract, if properly witnessed, [...]. The church also took the position that any ceremony performed between two persons of almost any age, and taking place anywhere and at any time, if performed by an ordained clergyman was legally valid, [...]."

    Good editing Phil. I’m going to write a long comment, warning in advance. No worries if you’d rather not read it. About calling themselves out, Moffat took things people were complaining about and incorporated it in. For example, people have complained for ages that the sonic screwdriver is used too much. So the War Doctor says “Oh the screwdrivers again! What are you going to do, assemble a cabinet at them? “
    Lol, if you get a chance, you should watch Sesskasays reaction of Day of the Doctor. Her fav Doctor is 11. She doesn’t hate the 10th Doctor like you do, but….
    Im so glad you appreciate the history of the show. Moffat didn’t want David’s last words on screen to change so he made that last line “I don’t want to go”
    I rewatch this a lot. No need to apologise for loving Amy and Rory. 11 is my Doctor, but 12 is in my top 5. It took me a little over half a season to appreciate him, but he’s terrific. The 4th Doctor is my fav Classic Doctor so that last scene between the two of them was my nirvana.
    So, glad you enjoyed it!

    A small note as you looked a bit confused by Elizabeth's "weak and feeble woman" line. That wasn't the show being weird, but a supposed quote from the speech she gave when the Spanish were about to try and invade England. It's a famous line here, but I would guess probably less so in the US.

    Marrying a queen regnant ( a woman who inherits a throne) does not make you a king - ask Prince Philip, Prince Albert, and all the other husbands of queens regnant there have been in Europe throughout history. A woman marrying a king becomes a queen consort (as in Queen Camilla) not a queen regnant (as in Queen Elizabeth II). Also marriage in the open air was illegal in the UK until last year, so the Doctor is not married to Elizabeth I.

    The Curator wasn't just "a" previous Doctor, he was THE previous Doctor, the one who played the Doctor for the longest out of anybody who's played the role (on-screen, anyway). Tom Baker, the Fourth Doctor, who played the role from Season 12 to Season 18 (more than 6 years!). Tom is consistently THE Doctor for most older fans of the show, so the idea that the Doctor would "revisit a few faces" by the time he retires was a way of nodding to those older fans.

  • @TheGreatLordDufus
    @TheGreatLordDufus ปีที่แล้ว

    "The curator" was played by Tom Baker, the fourth Doctor. The one classic you would have seen in non-Who media, all teeth and curls (and scarf). Classic Who fans didn't even need to see him, his is a distinctive voice.
    Whether The Curator was actually a Doctor or not is left ambiguous in the episode. We are clearly supposed to believe that Doctors can revert to aged versions of their past selves and he is somehow a future Doctor. But its not explicit and things are left open. Moffatt has stated the intent at conventions, but convention talk and eventual canon may not match.

    Glad you enjoyed this 50th anniversary episode! Back in 1973, the Doctor Who production team celebrated 10 years of Doctor Who by commissioning a multi Doctor story, which was called The Three Doctors. It starred the then current Doctor No. 3 (Jon Pertwee) and dealt with the Time Lords having to face off against a cataclysmic event that could destroy them, and required them to bring the two previous Doctors (William Hartnell and Patrick Troughton), out of their respective time streams to help the current Doctor defeat their enemy. In 1983, to celebrate Doctor Who’s 20th anniversary, a story called The Five Doctors was commissioned, and followed a similar format.
    Personally, I never liked the idea of the War Doctor. Sure, John Hurt was a big named star, but I think it would have been more fitting had Moffat brought back the 8th Doctor, Paul McGann (who had been so short changed as the Doctor previously), and used him as the War Doctor, which wouldn’t then have disrupted the continuity when NuWho started, with the 9th Doctor already suffering from what his predecessor did, when we see him in ‘Rose!’

    ooh i didn't expect this today. ok as i've been doing.. a lot recently on your vids (apologies if it's annoying you're just one of the few reaction channels i feel genuinely engages with the content) i'll type up a few thoughts.
    first off, although name of the doctor is basically bad DUE to the production focus of so much of s7b being on this story, it's still an amazing story in it's own right, imo the start of a MAJOR improvement from what came before.
    - yeah they never fucking explain how the name of the doctor's conclusion gets solved, that's fucking annoyinh, but this story is actualkly meant to take place 2 or 3 years after series 7b. hence her being a teacher now, and seemingly having a whole different life in the opening, and also her aesthetic changes slightly to look older imo. clara is meant to be 24 in s7 and i think this in this she's meant to be 27.
    -2013 was the peak of when all the tenrose fans (who hated clara even more than rose, even though.. clara just isn't AS annoying) where just about to leave the fandom so this really peaked their intrest lol.
    -the war doctor is easily the best thing in this story, including all the moments i loved from it.
    -so many scenes in this story that feel like moffat truly remembering how to write emotional wieght.
    -the i dont wanna go is so on the nose
    -that's tom baker, the 4th doctor, as the curator if you couldn't tell.
    -he's still considered the 12th. technically counting war AND metacrisis 10 he'd be 14. but the numbers go by how many actors have been the main doctor in the role not by technical incarnation numbers. and jon hurt was the doctor alongside 11 so he's not REALLY a mainline incarnation. even if he's loved enough to be describes as one. but yes, the next doctor is 12.
    -they announced the actor to play 12 as part of the 50th anniversary celebrations
    -this is some of billie piper's best acting ngl.
    -the zygons where a big popular clasic who moster not yet retyurned so an anniversy was perfect for that
    -timelord art is a concept taken from the 4th doctor story city of death, where it's only mentioned offhand. great story
    - a lot of ppl fidn the bad wolf line in perticular quite cringy
    -the timewar is described to make an unmake planet's histories in seconds and as far aback as s1 we see that it has wide reaching ramifications. but yeah they did not show the timewar nearly well enough.
    -the implication isn't that it's undone, atrleast to me, it was that the doctor didn't have a full picture of what was done.
    - i think the alt timeline take is intresting but not entirely accurate. they took care to make the retcon fit in with the events of the 50th as we heard them. and since doctors tend to not remember multi doctor stories, except the last incarnation present, who's the only one to remember it, which is.. something established as far back as classic who lol. so these events happeneed the war doctor only remembers goign to bloqw up galifrey, and then it's hazy, and then BOOM. it's gone. so he assumes he went through with it as galifrey chills in a frozen bubble universe.
    -the endign scene is great but also, very obviously just ppl in wigs until it swaps around an dthere's some BAD face replacement work. and also like.. they got cosplayers dressed up to play these doctors for the back shot, but then the front shot is entire ly static.. like, the face replacement is already bad, atleast have them sway a bit nobody's convinced.
    overall a great story imo that's the start of my favoruite period of the show personally, hope you enjoy.

    It's the 13th regeneration and the 12th Doctor because the War Doctor isn't a regeneration he counts as the Doctor. I'm so happy you liked it. I thought you might. I will say, of the last 5 Doctors (War Doctor, 9th Doctor, 10th Doctor, 11th Doctor, and 12th Doctor), I think Tennant's Doctor is the weakest for me. The Curator (old man) at the end was the guy who played the 4th Doctor. Whe was second to the left when all all the Doctors are standing together. I say more than that so I don't spoil anything. What did you think of Clara in this episode? Specifically, how she spoke to the Doctor at the end about killing his own people? usually the way i think about it, is the doctor's exact age, from new who onwards is kind a lie, but the time between events isn't.
      so the war doctor calling themselves 800 and the 9th doctor calling themselves 900, yeah 100 years passed between day of the doctor and rose. i can believe that. but the fact 7 called himself 950, and then 9, thoeretically a wholeass 2 incarnations and a timewar later. calls himself 900. nah, i think he forget his age at some point with all the timewar shenanigans.
