Grow Watermelon In Containers The Easy Way In Less Space

  • In this video, I'll show you how to grow watermelon in containers the easy way in less space than you thought possible! I've spent the last two years experimenting growing watermelon in as little space as possible. I had some success last year growing them on a mound, but I had a serious issue with pests damaging the vines that were sprawling on the grass. This year, I improved on the method greatly and have increased fruit set, decreased growing space and almost entirely eliminated pests!

    - what type of soil do you use, can i just use basic soil from the store ?
    - How often do you water them ?
    - Would they grow in a central Europe climate ? (summer is coming so i think it’s fine but not sure about winter)
    - Does the self pollinisation really work ? I doubt at the 6th floor there will be lots of bee to come up and i plan to do it manually !
    - Is there some type of special nutrients/supplements you can add to the soil the boost the fruit/plant growth ?

    perfect timing for something I'm curious about again! I planted three sugar baby watermelon transplants this year. I haven't tried watermelon in a few years. I really didn't know when to harvest. I put them in a newly started garden area. no grass around so it sounds like i did something right (straw and cardboardnso I'm seeing some ants.ugh).....BUT.......now I know I have to look for squash beetles. I have a a crrokneck in the next row over. I just have flowers now. It's dusk and every flower i see is closed! I did see a bee on an open flower in the am, though.

    I was able to grow a Crimson Sweet watermelon in a about 7 gallon plastic pot {way too small} this year. Yes it was very tasty. Next year is already planned out. I bought 15 gallon grow bags to grow some Sugar baby watermelon, rock honey cantaloupe, and some 20 gallon grow bags gonna try another Crimson Sweet watermelon, a Yellow Crimson watermelon, Ambrosia cantaloupe, sierra gold cantaloupe. I went to Lowes and bought bags of the cheapest compost/manure(will let them sit 6 - 8 months to age until needed) and peat moss. I'm gonna use 1/3 peat moss, 1/3 compost/manure, and 1/3 old used out of my plastic pots. gonna add some gypsum, garden lime, organic fertlizier "2 cups", alfalfa pellets, and some osmocote plus plant food that has 11 of the nutrients plants need. Plus they'll get the water soluble feedings every 7 to 10 days. After a lot of reading and research online the sugar baby minimum size is a 10 gallon bag so I went with 15 gallon --- the minimum size for watermelon and cataloupe are 15 gallon bags so I went with 20 gallon bags. That's why I chose the above sizes I picked.

    I have noticed that you insert a piece of PVC pipe into your 20-gallon grow bags to irrigate them. However, I have not seen an explanation as to how to make them suitable for proper watering. Do you cap the bottom and drill holes in the side of the pipe in varying sizes up the buried length to distribute the water evenly, and how deeply do you insert the pipe into the soil? How often do you fill the pipes? My wife is starting a new garden based on your information, and so far has had good success. Thanks for your help about this issue.

    • @TheMillennialGardener
      @TheMillennialGardener  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It is a 2" PVC pipe that I cut on an austere angle and drilled a bunch of 7/8" holes in. I used them for awhile, but they eventually plugged up and stopped working, so I don't use them anymore. They worked better in my mind than in practice. Once they fill up with silt, they don't do much anymore.

    • @TheMillennialGardener
      @TheMillennialGardener  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      mr ed I’m figuring out that while the roots are compact, they are ravenous feeders. I have been mixing in 15-30-15 bloom booster into my normal fertilizing regimen and I’m convinced I’m seeing a difference in fruit set. My watermelon, tomatoes, peppers and cucumbers have really increased flowering dramatically. I’m even seeing a few tomatoes set despite the 93/73 degree highs/lows we are seeing every day. I was seeing close to 100% blossom drop before in these conditions, but I’m getting a few tomatoes forming now since I switched things up 3 weeks ago. I’m turning into a major believer in phosphorous.
      Next year I want to perform a controlled experiment between popular soluble fertilizers and fruit production.

      Once the watermelons begin to ripen, they demand a lot of water. You may find that the 5 gallon buckets dry out far too quickly. If you are away at work for 10 hours a day, you may find your plants suffering. 5 gallon buckets seem fine at first, but they can become quickly problematic as the plant matures and demands more water, because they do so as the summer gets hotter and hotter. It's always best to go bigger with your container.

    I’ll have to check out these grow bags! I’ve seen other ppl use it but never interested.. this now made it interesting!
    To get more female producing blooms, I’d pinch the direct vine. We do that for the gourds and squash we grow. I guess the thought is the energy is directed in that main vine and just wants to grow instead of produce. Pinching the direct vine redirects that energy... it’s worth a try for sure.

    • @TheMillennialGardener
      @TheMillennialGardener  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Anh Ung one thing to consider is the root system can only support so much energy, so the more fruits you set, the smaller they’ll be. If you set many fruits, you will have to split that energy between them. The plants send multiple vines, and I believe the general rule of thumb is one fruit per vine.

    To try and produce a more bountiful and healthy garden I am practicing something called companion planting. This involves not only beneficial fruit and vegetables, but also beneficial flowers being planted in close proximity to the garden. Flowers can protect your garden from pests through smell and attracted beneficial pollinators and other insects that like to eat the bad insects. This could be an alternative to manual pollination.

    Do you think a kiddie pool with grow bags and wire fencing in a circle would work for growing watermelons

    • @TheMillennialGardener
      @TheMillennialGardener  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I would advise against that, because those are generally not UV-treated and will fall apart within 1-2 seasons. If you're sure they are UV-resistant, you can do so. However, the cheap kiddie pools usually sold at Walmart for $20-40 are not and will fall apart on you. I know a lot of garden channels promote this, but if you have to replace them every year, it winds up being such a waste. If they're UV-treated, I think it's a fine idea.

    Did you have to hand pollinate those plants? I'm having really bad luck with Zucchini this year. I have 6 plants and so far every zucchini got about 2 inches long and turned yellow on the tip and rotten then fell off. I heard that it was a calcium problem, and I also heard that it was a pollination problem. I watered them with milk to get the calcium to the plants faster and that didn't help, 2 days ago I hand pollinated several, but 90% of the flowers are always closed. I never had any problems growing Zucchini before. They have always been easy to grow.

      Healthy Zuchinni plants grow really really FAST.....are you growing them in pots or in the ground? Something could be attacking the roots if in the ground, maybe earth grubs, or vine borer beetles. Maybe your soil is too acidic/ ?...Dig out one plant and inspect the roots and the 3 or 4 inches where the root ends and the stem begins. If nothing looks out of place then it might be a soil deficient problem. Here's what I did: For each plant I dug an 18" diameter hole in from direct soil. No pots.I replaced this with , and I added my own potting mix making sure to add lime from the HD in the plant dept. This adds calcium and magnesium....A handful for a good shovel and a half for each hole I dug.....water them once a week with one gallon of fish emulsion A capful to one gallon in a watering can. I spray the leaves with neem oil, too... High nitrogen will promote leaf growth and high potassium fertilizer will promote fruit and flower growth. Like 3-6-6 or something similar. But first you want good leaf growth. This works for me as I have 21 Zuchinni plants planted soil direct. Trim off any poor looking leaves close to the ground this will not hurt anything...then spray the stem with neem oil and the ground around it..Like I said , you can plant them again as they grow fast and you can still have a harvest They love plenty of sun and water. .Hope this helps.

    • @TheMillennialGardener
      @TheMillennialGardener  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      You must use a seedling heat mat. Watermelon seeds need high heat to germinate. They will not germinate in cool soil. Also, watermelon seeds have about 60% germination, so you need to overseed: plant 2-3 seeds per cell. If you sow 2-3 seeds in each cell and use a seedling heat mat, they will germinate in 4 days. Sometimes even faster!

Like in group A send one right and one left?

    • @TheMillennialGardener
      @TheMillennialGardener  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't think there is any rhyme or reason. They're vines, so they're growing wild on purpose to try and find things to grab onto. Basically, it's in their best interest to have random, vigorous growth. The only way I've been able to manage the growth is to pick up and move the vines on a semi-daily basis. You just have to pick them up and place them where you want them to go from the beginning and manually direct their growth.

    Great ideas with the fabric. Keeps weeds and pest away. The good news with watermelon is that its a vine so you can train it to go where you want it to. Such as on a trellis or even vertically for the smaller variety since they'll need to be supported.
    I like in an apartment now so I'm going to try a challenge growing watermelons vertically in containers. Although now that I see your bags I may use them instead.
    My balcony doesn't get enough sunlight for melons, so I'll be adding a grow light. Of course this may not work at all, but I just want to see if it can be done. Since watermelon are among the most difficult crops to grow, if this works, than anything should be possible. I did actually get a nice yield of tomatoes and habaneros to grow a couple years back with just a few hours of direct sunlight. I was really surprised and delighted to have accomplished that challenge.

    • @TheMillennialGardener
      @TheMillennialGardener  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Krane I recommend you try Sugar Babies. In my experience, the vines can’t support the fruit of larger melons when grown vertically and they snap. The smaller sugar babies tend to hold. They’re also a little less demanding on the plants with your lower light conditions. A smaller variety that grows 3-5 lb melons may be good for you.

    • @TheMillennialGardener
      @TheMillennialGardener  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      That sounds like a lack of pollination. Female flowers always have a baby watermelon attached to them. If they do not get pollinated by a male flower, the female fruit will abort. They usually abort when they're about 2 inches in diameter. It sounds like you don't have a lot of bees in your garden, and if that's the case, you may need to hand pollinate manually with a makeup brush (go from male flower to female flower), or you may want to consider planting some flowers nearby to attract the bees.

    • @TheMillennialGardener

      I do not prune watermelon vines. Some gardeners do, because if you remove the wine after each melon, they will theoretically grow larger since the plants will have less fruit. The fewer fruits your plant sets, the larger they can potentially grow. The downside is you’ll have less fruits. If something goes wrong, you’ll have less spare fruits to fall back on.

    what are the pests that like watermellon and what do you use

    • @TheMillennialGardener
      @TheMillennialGardener  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Vivian Gerard watermelon is in the same family as cucumber, so the pests are similar. The main pests are cucumber beetles and leaf hoppers in my climate. Growing on this weed barrier has made the ground too hot for the pests, so it has kept them off. If you don’t want to use the weed barrier, it will be tougher. You may want to try with dusts like spinosad or Sevin and apply it to the leaves and vines to keep it away from the flowers. If you get it in the flowers, you can kill pollinators.

    I did a plant on a tomato cage the watermelon turned out the size of a large orange
    I used viable seeds from a mini seedless and pollinated the female flowers from that with male flowers from a crimson sweet plant
    They turned out ok they were pink, nice and juicy and full of seeds but had very little flavor they tasted like cucumber with a hint of watermelon
    I’ll replant the seeds and see what comes up next year 😁

      I would not recommend using a male flower from another plant. If you cross-pollinate, you will likely wind up with very seedy fruit. Cross-pollination usually increases seed production. Pollinating a watermelon with its own male flowers will provide a better result. The only reason to cross-pollinate is if you’re growing a gynoecious variety that lacks male flowers or you’re trying to breed new hybrids.
      If you cross-pollinated, all the seeds will be genetically unique, so all the seeds you plant will grow random plants.

      Watermelons are very heavy feeders, like every two weeks at least.
