    Yes, called it. I was thinking when he played the original without the extra processing, “That sounds like it could use some saturation in a low band.” I do the opposite (same thing, just with a high band instead of low) to my kick drums to get them to cut through, especially helpful on little speakers like cell phones. I generally use Neutron’s exciter module with tape saturation. The three band option makes it really easy to isolate the spot that needs the delicious saturated boost.

      Interesting concept, I played around with this and found this to be the case - it literally sounds like the mic placement is moving deeper into the snare..could be good or bad depending on the snare and how its being hit, and what you're going for sonically...you are limited (as you often are) by mic bleed and other frequencies/instruments being picked up...but that's part of the fun in mixing drums

    Guys, lemme give you the absolute, no nonsense, 100% best “get a good snare sound” tip. This applies to snares more than any other drum. If you have any control over the tracking, make sure they use a great snare. I’m in the process of mixing an album that used two drummers and the biggest pain in the ass for me is that one used an AMAZINGLY TUNED yammy recording custom and the other used (for reasons unknown) a stock mapex. Snares are much more than a “close mic” scenario…they’re a mainstay in your overheads and room sound, too. You can bring in samples all you want, you can send those samples to all of the parallel processing you want…but that room sound and those overheads will always tell the story of the original snare. Quality snare tracking is of the utmost importance…right up there with guitar intonation.

    Hi Dave - I love your all your vids. Almost everything I have learned about mixing that I have kept in my brainroom has come from you (and Ola Englund for guitars). Could you consider doing a non-digital gear review? Specifically, about your experience with makes of monitors. Pluses and minuses of the more affordable and more expensive brands, since I'm sure you have come into contact with a full range of them.

    I think if plugin windows had solo buttons it would save a lot of going back and forth to solo and un-solo when applying a plugin, or maybe thats just because i'm lazy

    • @FrankySmit91
      @FrankySmit91 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You shouldnt want to solo and un-solo when applying a plugin. It doesnt matter what it sounds like solo, as long as it sounds right in the mix

    • @charltonpepper5317
      @charltonpepper5317 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      sometimes its hard to hear the subtle differences when playing around with the different settings if theres too much going in the mix. For sure your final step should be cheking how it sounds in the mix but it can be unnecessarily strenuous on the ears if you keep trying to hear the differences when you're playing around with everything else going on.

  •  9 ปีที่แล้ว

    hmm sounds good but i don`t have this plugin is there a way around it? the decapitator is pretty expensive right? ... i do it that way...i take a fft (i love the one that comes with the motu cuemix) look up where the deepest note of the snare hit is and enhance only that frequency, sometimes the gutiar and the bass have much going on there (it`s mostly around 200hz) so i filter a very small band only on that frequency and it`s instantly fatter in the mix

  • @georgeolina3414

    Can somebody explain to me how is the snare sound in "Don't you" by Simple Minds was created? Was it an actual snare drum, an electronic drum?

    • @skeletonrowdie1768
      @skeletonrowdie1768 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      it's an actual snare drum, there is quite a lot of high reverb, a lot of high end to the snare. My guess is that the snare has a freq boost in de low mid and around 4-5k, then it was compressed a loooot. This is my educated guess :p. The snare sounds electronical because there is a hihat sitting right on the snare each time, giving it a really consistent sizzle.

    • @georgeolina3414
      @georgeolina3414 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for the response. So no overdrive or distortion to give it the "gunshot" sound?

    • @skeletonrowdie1768
      @skeletonrowdie1768 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I would find that hard to answer, i'm sure they must have added some subtle saturation somewhere, but i can't really hear it clearly. I'm not too familiar with the song also :) so i can't really help you further sorry!

    • @oledahl.
      @oledahl. 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you feel that way buddy you probably need more ear training. These nuances are for a beginner impossible to hear, for an intermediate mixer hard but for a pro you don't need to a/b that one. But just keep mixing as much as possible and especially in a treated room (that's probably even more important than expensive speakers), but I'll assure you that soon you'll hear it as clear as the seashore when you're on the beach. (I know; pretty lousy example but you get where I'm going with this). :) keep on mixing! 6-8 hours a day is a minimum. Then most people get "pro ears" in a few years. :)
