    The Svea 123 was the first stove I bought back in 1970. Still works fantastically and you're right it's fun to use. I just tip the stove to spill some fuel into the priming cup instead of using an eyedropper. Thanks for your take on it Dave.

    I owned a Svea 123 as a teenager back in the '70's. I do not know what ever became of that stove. I've owned many backpacking stoves since then, including an MSR Whisperlite International an and MSR Dragonfly white gas stove. In the summer, you can't beat the canister stoves. I use an MSR Pocket Rocket. However, in Winter it's white gas all the way. After having a couple of pump failures with my MSR white gas stoves, I decided to return to my roots. I just ordered a Svea 123R for this year's winter backpacking season. You simply can't beat the simplicity and reliability of those little brass stoves.

    David I have one of those stoves, get this I purchased it in 1973!! I bought the pressurizer upgrade but never really liked it. They actually used to recommend using alcohol for the preheat as it was less volatile than Naptha. Those stoves work!! I‘ve used mine at -40 C as well as +30 C. It has never failed me! Type up detailed instructions for you son because he will inherit it!! As always a great video!!

    I've been using a Svea 123 for years (ok decades), never wanted another stove for solo trips. I picked up the Terra Weekend HE a few years back and this is now what comes with me on motorcycle camping trips. Makes morning coffee, warms soup for lunch, can whip up some tasty pasta or stew for dinner! If I'm just making coffee the stove will go 5-6 days without needing more fuel.

    I am 73 years old and have been using the Svea 123r since the 1960's. I figured out a neat way to start it. Just tear off a small piece of paper towel, toilet paper will not work. Roll it long ways between your fingers. Then open the fuel cap and dip the rolled paper towel into the ful and let it soak up some gas. Put the rolled paper towel in the preheating cup, being careful not to let it get near the fuel cap so you don't burn the o ring. Jut light it and open the vaqlve when it gets hot. That way you don't have fuel running down the outside of the stove.

    Boy! Your 123R stove sure looks shiny! I bought mine in 1973. It's not shiny but it sure works good. It was up on the Great Western Divide last month. Worked great at 10000 ft.

  • @williamstatt8651
    @williamstatt8651 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Instead of an eye dropper, use a small piece of paper towel rolled up, about 2 inches. Dip that into the white gas and let it soak up the gas. Put the cap on.Then wrap it around the base of the generator. Try to keep it open at the cap so you don't fry the cap's washer. Then you won't have gas running down the sides. In the winter you may have to do it twice, so use gas from your refill tank. Also in the winter you may have to shield the stove from the cold ground to keep pressure.

    Oooooh! Yeah! So happy to see this kind of beauty roaring it's so fun. I have myself a similar one made for the czechoslovakia army down the fifties it's Maeva 1420 and also a optimus 111 The practical side of those is that you can work them with white gas and kerosen and you clan even get a burner jet for alcohol. People put them aside because you need to well master their ignition but They fan beat a jet boil and other canister stove. It's really a pleasure to see all Your videos but this one ignite back my passion for those old school stove and I think I'm gone buy some fuel soon 😉

    no need for the eyedropper, really; just hold the base of the stove in your hand for a bit, then open the fuel valve to let some fuel dribble out into the capture-cup at the base of the burner. The heat from your hand expands the air in the reservoir and allows the fuel to escape when you open the valve; convenient.

    I have one these in my attic - also early 70ies - just had one blow-out after a long days cycling... and a Phoebus - heavy as ??? but the best petrol burner ever.... built like a tank and a roar that would frighten dragons. I pre-warmed with spirits as they did leave gunk behind - a small syringe and spirits available in every pharmacy. And it used leaded petrol/gasoline ;-) .

    The SVEA 123 is one of the most classic stoves in the history of backpack stoves. "Back in the Day (1970s)", we used gas stoves primarily as back-up for emergency when we got caught in storms or got into camp late at night. We used them for boiling water did not use the stoves really for cooking. Most meals were cooked on campfires. So, we did not bring extra fuel either as the fuel in the stove was enough for emergency even on a 5 day trip. The SVEA 123 really is a water boiling stove. It is not a good stove for cooking because it puts out an intense flame in a very small area and has limited flame control. If you want a real cooking challenge/mess, try using a SVEA 123 along with one of those old thin aluminum cook kit "frying pans" to fry an egg! Burn, Baby, burn. What a mess. In cold weather, the SVEA 123 was inefficient because it relies on heat to pressurize the fuel tank and the cold would quickly reduce the pressure. There were pumps that you could add to the kit, but by that time better stoves were coming out like the Coleman Featherlite which eventually became the Coleman Peak stoves that had built in pumps and infinitely better flame control.

    • @coffeepot3123
      @coffeepot3123 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think one can add metal mesh above the burner head to spread the heat out more evenly.

    • @explorermike19
      @explorermike19 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@coffeepot3123 surely you are correct. You can buy a very expensive flame spreader for the SVEA123, but I'll bet somebody has come up with a simple add low cost flame spreader.

    • @mikemorgan5015
      @mikemorgan5015 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@explorermike19 Yup, a little metal disk the same size as the windscreen diameter with a few dimples punched in it. For low simmer, dimples up, for high simmer or low boil, dimples down. I have 2. One's copper and the other is stainless. They actually used to ship simmer plates like this with the Coleman 520/M1941 GI stoves in WWII. The simmer plates usually got lost so they aren't usually still with the stoves, but they are out there. The cleaning needle on them could be used to regulate the output on them too. But you better use something besides you bare fingers to turn it or just like the key on a 123 if you leave it on the spindle, it'll burn the crap out of you. I speak from the school of hard knocks....haha! A few layers of aluminum foil will work in a pinch. ALWAYS carry aluminum foil. It's so versatile.

    • @mikemorgan5015
      @mikemorgan5015 ปีที่แล้ว

      The Coleman's are, hands down, a better cooking stove. But the 123s are much lighter and more compact. It just depend on what's more important to you and what the intended use is. You are right about the tight hot heat pattern, but see my other comment on simmer plates. The secret to using them in cold weather is insulating it from the cold ground and wind. Loosen and tighten the fuel cap. Warm the stove with your hands or abdomen under your coat for a few second and open the key. No eyedropper needed. The fuel start coming out and collect in the priming pan. Once that's lit you're in business. But it DOES take a couple of minutes. Most folks don't appreciate how difficult it really is, even with good equipment, to cook outdoors in less than optimum conditions.
      Glad you mentioned the Colemans. I presently live in North Texas and it's hotter than hell the last few years. To keep the heat of cooking out of the house, and secretly because I love to play with my stoves, I like to cook outside on the stove(s) du jour. Last night I made jalepeno stuffed chicken breast on the grill and on a Coleman 550B I cooked peas, and on a 445 Apex I cooked potatoes and then steamed corn on the cob. I used a mix of kitchen pots and Optmus HE pots. All was done as well as I could have indoors but cooking on camping stoves is just so much more satisfying. Yeah, I'm a little different. Have a super week!

    The R is not my first choice, to many moving parts with the self cleaning needle.. I find it doesn't put out as much BTU's as the non cleaning version..
    The drawback is you need to bring an extra tool the cleaning pick.

    I nest/pack mine almost exactly the same... Great tip attaching the key to the screen, doing that. But everyone makes a big deal of priming, I have always just filled the tank, then spilled extra onto the tank, nothing to carry.

    Being an official member of "old" school, I do appreciate the Old School Cool of this all brass stove. I have cast iron cookware from my grandmother that is over a century old and some brass handled tools from my dad, all still going strong. Good stove, didn't know they where still around, Back in the 80s when I was in Boy Scouts they where very popular. That Reservoir does two things. Pre-heats the stove and the heat pressurizes the tank. Unlike say a Coleman backpacking stove that has a pump to pressurize the fuel tank. Also those Svea stoves can burn through the bottom of your pot if your not paying attention.

    NIce 123r! I never understood those noisy burners and I preferred my quiet Trangia stoves until last year when I bought an old Optimus 111b stove. Now I get it, those roarer burners kick butt! ;)
    I found my 111b on Craigslist for $20, but a few months later I found a MSR Dragonfly for $35. Same burner type, same output as the 111b but much smaller and lighter. That MSR stove was only used twice, and it came with an unused $30 Expedition Maintenance kit included. That Dragonfly is now my favorite stove.

    Bought one of these stoves, with the little cooking pot and handle, for a dollar at the 2nd hand store. It IS a fun little item. I can remember back in the sixties and seventies when this was thee item for lightweight backpacking. Of course, these days I prefer alcohol, soda can, stoves for three season and a gas stove in winter. I still have so many items for kitchen, it's sometimes a challenge to figure out which one to bring. I even carry, from time to time, once or twice a year, one of my old Colman liquid fuel stoves, those three pound monstrosities that were and are fool proof and always reliable, but still, these little Svea's a fun and work so well. Thanks for the demo on the cook kit, too. Looks a lot like the Esbit pot and burner stoves. So many choices these days, aren't there?

    Say Heah Dave, WoW, That's neat, This week, Since snow and rain is forecasted, It will give me a nice way to practice making fire when wet, The cutting tools will be my Puma Bowie 2, which I got lucky and bought it at a great price brand new at the Pawn shop, I'm pairing it off with my Weidmannshiel Slender Clip Point Bird and Troy Knife also in the 440c. Both knives were made in Solingen, Germany, and both are integral with Stag Slabs, My Puma is integral and doesn't have the Bolster and Pommel like the Puma Bowie, My Bowie 2 is just blade and Slabs, but in the 440c. and I have it very sharp with a vexed edge. I also plan of using my Estwing Sportsman Hatchet with the Leather Handle, I'm also using my Curved Corona Folding Saw which also fits in my Silky Bigboy2000 Sheath. I'm also using my Maxpedition Kodiak Shouldersling, because of its capacity. This video came in a perfect time. By the way, My Ratweiler /Rodent Solution makeshift piggyback worked magnificently, But I guess I wasn't ready for the cold this soon, especially when it was near 70°f when we left and freezing when we left, Infact I just came back and enjoyed watching the Pat's beat the 49'ners. Thanx You Dave. ,, .

Some caution regarding the fuel though, get the cleanest possible white gas possible both for your health and less maintenance of the stove.
    There seems to be some questions regarding the stove that might be answered by having a look at the manufacturers site www.optimusstoves.com/en/de/200-8016279-optimus-svea. There is a manual available also, have a look under Downloads.
