But I've been there, been told to alter my behavior, walk on eggshells in order to avoid angering them and I felt bitter because I knew it wasn't fair, I knew that they were in the wrong and they should be the ones to alter their behavior. But sadly there was no altering their behavior. It was upsetting, it felt unfair, but ultimately I know my mother was trying to protect me because she knew that other person wouldn't change. All I could do in that situation was try to avoid incurring their wrath. But because of that experience I can say that I sort of understand how Mikami feels. And when you're in pain and the other person seemingly just stands there, not doing anything to help (or doing more to help in your opinion) it can feel like a betrayal. They can feel like bystanders, and it can make you resent them a little for not doing anything (or, again, doing more to help).
True, but it was evident from a young age his sense of justice had been perverted by the cruelty he witnessed and personally experienced. It's possible he didn't always think this way though. He said at first his "heart rejected it" which I assume means that at first he was genuinely mournful when his mother accidentally died. Unfortunately time and adverse experiences has a way of twisting memories, so perhaps later on in order to maintain a consistent identity Mikami subconsciously retroactively misremembered himself feeling somewhat happy (but still in denial about it) when his mother and the bullies died. In reality he may not have actually felt that way. Or perhaps he did, maybe a small part of him did feel relief at his bullies' deaths, though I doubt at the time he felt happy about his mother's death. Not to say that he was in the right, but I can understand some of his anger towards his mother despite the fact that she was just trying to protect him. She insulted him saying that it "made him look like an idiot", and Mikami felt betrayed that the one person in his life whom had always been on his side was now suddenly "against" him. Saying that he should stop defending others, even if her intentions were good. Parents are only human, they make mistakes and can sometimes say and do things with the best of intentions but still accidentally hurt their children. Perhaps if Mikami's mother had approached the situation a bit differently, gotten Mikami some therapy, things would've turned out different, but who can say for sure?
