The image of sprinters Tommie Smith and John Carlos raising their fists during a medal ceremony at the 1968 Olympics in Mexico City is an enduring image of silent protest. But the key to understanding it goes beyond the black-gloved fists. All three medal winners, including silver medalist Peter Norman of Australia, wore buttons that read “Olympic Project for Human Rights.” The Olympic Project for Human Rights (OPHR) was a coalition of prominent athletes formed in 1967 that threatened to boycott participating in the upcoming Olympic games, in order to draw attention to systemic racism in the United States. The group, led by professor Harry Edwards, ultimately voted to compete in the games and hold their demonstrations there, which led to the now-iconic display on the medal stand following the men’s 200-meter final. This act got Smith and Carlos kicked off the team, but left a lasting legacy on making political statements through sport.

I know this is very important to talk about but I also notice the lack of information about this year and its Olympic games, why am I saying this? because in that year there were also protests by Mexicans where the government tried to silence them by disappearing students and killing them so that they did not interfere in this great world event, 1968 was a horrible year and those Olympic games should never have been done since it served as smokescreen to the government to appease the student protests in Mexico, MexicanLivesMattersToo. I know that this is not the main topic of the video but it is very important to mention it, since this terrible tragedy is always minimized because of this other event that occurred at the same year. Just complementing the information.
You should also tell the story of silver medalist Australian. How was dropped from there team due to this.
In India we have this whole story with there statue picture in an university and we loved the dare they shown.

The Black gloves was given to them by the white Australian athlete, Pete Norman who won the silver. Pete was never forgiven in Australia and paid dearly for it. Australia cancelled him.

The white man in the photo suffered a lot after returning to Australia, because he wore the badge, and because he gave them the gloves.
He also said that he didnt raise his fist because it wasnt about him. He shoudnt have been attacked the way he was. He didnt deserve that. To this day people call him a racist too because he didnt raise his fist. He was not. He deserved better.

I'm from India . I remember seeing this iconic picture in my history textbook back in school . Me and my classmates were all annoyed reading on to realise that the three of them faced trouble for this peaceful act of protest.

*Fun Fact* : Just days before the 1968 Olympics started, the Mexican government massacred hundreds of student protestors. To this day, the exact number of casualties and missing people is unknown. Despite the bloodshed, the games continued as if nothing happened. It’s so appalling to see how governments think they can get away with such injustices. As an American, I am proud to see how these exceptional athletes stood their ground and fought for what’s right

The 68 movement is really important in Mexico it being remembered by the phrase "el 2 de octubre no se olvida" and being inmortalized with a lot of movies, and more, that kind of suppression continued in 1971 in "el halconazo" yep a lot of protestors being represed in Mexico City, all students and people who supported them

@Don Quixote the spirit of the civil rights movement was not just about equal rights but being seen as an equal when the only difference is the skin color. We know that some of these injustices still persist. Anyways, the problem with American government system is that there are two parties, so you get all the extremes of either side also sided with them. Racists you have in both parties.

Conservatives want to conserve the way things are, they will typically push back against progress because they like the way things are. Modern Republicans are conservative. Lincoln was not a conservative he was a liberal who supported the federal government and advocated for social progress. The Democratic Party during the civil war and well into the 60s was a much more conservative party, specifically southern Democrats aka the “Dixiecrats”. Please take a few poli sci and American history courses, they’ll be very eye opening for you. But you’re right about the two party system destroying America, because that’s what both parties want, it suits their interests.

Today, efforts to put institutional racism from the missing parts of U.S. history education including the 1619 Project will almost certainly be discouraged and challenged for being "political". Tom Cotton said schools would lose federal funding if the oppression and suffering of millions of innocent men, women and children was given the analysis it properly deserved.

My history teacher from 8th grade met the guy that got 3rd place.
He had a poster of that picture in his room for years and always looked up to those men. Every time he was feeling down, he would admire that picture and it would change his mindset to become better. He’s been my favorite teacher I’ve had so far.
He said it was one of the best moments of his life, meeting him. Other than having his kids.

I’m from Mexico City and I remember this picture very well growing up. We had a very difficult situation during those Olympics cause months prior to the games the government decided to shoot and incarcerate a lot of students in a public meeting. During the game’s opening ceremony activists that infiltrated the committee released a flock of black pigeons among the white doves flying in the Olympic stadium. Those Olympics are pretty much cursed in Mexico.

To those unaffected and indifferent to U.S. citizens killed by law enforcement, it's either not a problem or a minor problem. To those affected, it's a catastrophe.
In the words of Dr. Cornell West, "America doesn't have a race problem. Problems are easily solved. America has a race catastrophe that was visted on Black and Red people. When you reduce the catastrophic to the problematic, you have sanitized the issue".
When you have sanitized the issue, you have minimized the terror into a minor inconvenience, thereby making it easy to deny.
A civil and just society can't operate on denial, minimization, or to blame those with the least amount of power.

A lot of things happened in the mexico city Olympics of '68. Not just for America but for the world. The IOC withdrew the invitation to participate from south Africa, Mexican students rioting were killed, the first time a woman lit the Olympic flame.

At South India is the new Economic Hub of India. There is nothing as such in Northeast India. We were, are always being tried to be dominated. It has been fixed in many regards. These days, the pendulum has swung way too much to the other side, where bad behavior, crime and discriminatory affirmative action policies are swept under the rug by BLM, every progressive corporation and the naive public.
It has improved alot. This is not a big problem anymore. Police brutality is such a minor problem compared to other way bigger problems such as the amount of overweight people in america, the education system and infrastructure.

I had the great honor and pleasure of meeting Mr Tommie Smith at SDSU back in 2010 when I was just a 15 year old sophomore. I was lucky enough to speak to him and ask him questions. I asked him “was it worth it? Was he scared for his life? Did he know what he was doing ? And did he know what effect it would have on the world?” He answered them all and took a picture with me. One of the greatest moments in my life.

I honestly can't watch the Olympics anymore after learning about how they treat the athletes and communities they rely on. Athletes can't live off a win, the hosting cities suffer greatly. There are so many things wrong with it, and the Olympic committee. Were it not for the sportsmanship and the solidarity often arising out of it I'd be fully opposed to them (instead of just boycotting them).

Being an Australian, learning the Silver medalist was an Australian who supported them made me proud.
Then reading comments saying how the Australian Government punished him for it, was a little upsetting.
But history is there to learn from and as a society, it is our duty to evolve.
The children these days that watched this, almost all of them asked the same question : why is this still going on after all these years?
