This drama seems to be more about Miller than Miller and Petey. When asked about their relationship Petey got visibly frustrated at having to answer the question. Almost as if he felt, as Boudreau stated last night on TSN, that the media had overblown the entire story. "Mountains out of mole hills" was the phrase Boudreau chose.
Now, Petey also came out and publicly declared his interest in staying in Vancouver - while JT Miller is still his teammate by the way. Nobody thought that was strange? Miller didn't publicly declare his interest in staying and took a leave of absence.
Now we all know Canadian NHL markets are a fishbowl, of which the media plays a significant role, and many point to Vancouver as the most aggressively microscopic. I can't help but think this is far less about Miller and Petey and more about Miller and the media. I'd bet Miller has had enough of people like Farhan specifically and just said, "I'm out." And I'd bet he has nothing bad to say about Petey or even the city itself.
So while the media will admit Canadian markets are more intense, and players often choose other places because of this extra intensity, in a moment like this, where we are all baffled at how two grown men can't get along,, maybe it isn't even about them, maybe it's about the media's disturbing habit of getting into the personal lives and relationships of the players just so they have content to peddle. Sports media ventures too often into TMZ territory. Participating in low frequency gossip, conjecture, and speculation. The lowest forms of communication. I personally would be OK seeing another three or four of the ever-dwindling number of reporters in Vancouver dismissed of their duties and sent packing starting with Farhan Lalji.

McDavid is a new breed of holier than though skilled players, spolied and not willing to participate in the game other than getting their way, or be dirty about retribution. It's typical spoiled child behaviour. What should have McDefense?'s response been to a holding penalty not called against Garland (in the midst of a roughing penalty not called against McD, by the way!... making the refs let both go, and play on)? Either Garland did something egregious (intent to injure) against McD (which he didn't), or he interfered with McD's ability to get into the play. If the first was true, the thing a MAN playing hockey would do, is drop the stick, drop the gloves, and take humbrage by challenging the guy to a fight (such is the nature of this sport, like it or not). As it wasn't anything that bad that Garland did, then he can go to the refs and complain, like MEN do in this game, when a seemingly blatant call is 'missed', or not called, and the refs can give their explanation. As Captain of the team, this is even MORE the direction McDoh! has at his disposal. To react how he did to a potential "holding / interference penalty", initially with a punch to Garland's head (a "roughing penalty"), and then the two-hander cross-check to a guy's face, is inexcusable. NOTHING Garland did desreved that. Take your frustration of being checked (literally) into the ice for most of the game back into the dressing room, and break a toilet or something... NOT break someone's face! GROW UP, and alternatively stand up for yourself LIKE A MAN, and challenge Garland to a scrap, per NHL 'civil law', if you think what he did warranted it. Jeez, it's not like you'd have been challenging Joshua or even Miller! It's 5'9" Garland! Glad the NHL laid down the law, rather than a simple $$ Fine.
