    There is also variation within the Scandinavian style that’s worth pointing out. For example, the Danish style has more international mid-century elements with metal materials (see Arne Jacobsen), the Swedish style is generally more derived from traditional carpentry and more of a modernist interpretation of a traditional style (see Carl Malmsten and Josef Frank), and the Finnish style is a bit of a mix of the two being very much based on wooden techniques-like the Swedish style-but with more avant garde forms like the Danish style (See Alvar Aalto). Really enjoying your videos!

      Actually this I think is crucial as both add more saturation - the Danish in the teak, the Swedish in the prints. I know very few Swedes who do lights neutrals only. There is usually something very colourful somewhere

    I grew up in Northern Europe. We love white, cream, beige, light, big windows, open windows and doors, candles, heaters, fireplaces, plants inside, wood smell, macrame, straw, wool, linen, evergreen branches, but also anything green winter time like cranberry bush. It's ok to bring anything inside from outside - plants, sticks and stones and even animals. Parents made us take the animals back. As far as color goes, we were happy with yellow sun, green forest/grass and blue sea/sky. Orange/red sunset was extra special.

    In north Norway the sun is gone for some places more than two months in mid winter. It gets dark around 2 - half past 2 pm, we have a kind of dim daylight between 10 am and 2 pm. In Svalbard it's even darker, but then we have sun around the clock in mid summer.

    As a Scandinavian (Stockholm, Sweden) it is really interesting to learn about what people in the North America considers “Scandinavian style”. I think all the furniture in my home are designed in Sweden or Denmark, with some design elements from Finland added. However, it certainly doesn’t look much like the what you showed in this video. For instance, I have no issues at all using printed curtains or throw pillows. And I love to use art and kitchen utensils that I picked up when traveling.

      I visited Sweden and I loved the traditional Carl Larson style. I’m not a fan of modern and have no understanding of the present fascination with gray. It’s everywhere and not Scandinavian cozy. Someone mentioned that it’s interesting to see what others consider Scandinavian. There are as many variations of Scandi as there are American styles.

    Yes here in Scandinavia carpets are considered dirty and disgusting. We don't wear shoes indoors and need our floors to feel clean. Therefore carpets doesn't add the feeling of coziness to us. So not that weird when you think about it 😀

    • @TA-lt1ph
      @TA-lt1ph 3 ปีที่แล้ว +22

      I agree. I hate carpeting because feet should be clean and germ free. My feet are Scandinavian and my heart loves a very eclectic look. It is challenge when every apartment I have ever rented in California has wall to wall carpeting. Very disgusting.

      @ExposingMiLabs Sometimes people have heating in the floors but definitely not the majority, and house shoes aren't that common. We just like bare floors and wood is actually quite warm.

    • @Surdeigt
      @Surdeigt 3 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      @ExposingMiLabs in new houses it's a lot more common to have heated floors. Old homes; not so much. That's the first thing my husband and I did when we renovated our house, heated flooring is amazing in winter ☺️ we would never consider carpets though. The only place I've ever seen carpets as flooring in Scandinavia is in hotels 😂

    • @Surdeigt
      @Surdeigt 3 ปีที่แล้ว +19

      @ExposingMiLabs we don't use top sheets, since we change the duvet sheets on a regular basis 😅 until I saw a video about differences from Britain to the US (in regards to bedroom stuff) I didn't even know what a top sheet was 😂 that's probably why they looked at you like an alien, they have no clue what you were talking about 😉 I hope you're able to come back to Scandinavia again. I love my home country Norway, I hope you get to visit someday ☺️

      @Surdeigt 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @ExposingMiLabs If you ever get to go to Svalbard, Longyearbyen - you should. I grew up there, and in dark winter the northern lights are beautiful! Tromsø is also very nice ☺️ ofc the fjords. The country looks so different from south to north, so experiencing one isn't enough 😉 Hehe. Yes, take a top sheet with you. We just don't have those. We have one duvet for summer and one for winter, and that's that. And yes, we use 100% cotton covers, and some - if they like it - use flannel. It's also nice in winter, when it's almost snowing inside (we still have the windows open, don't care how cold it is). I hope you're able to travel here someday ☺️

      that is actually what most Scandinavians will consider #Scandinavian interior design" or actually "Scandinavian interior styling" as the term Scandinavian design is only used on designer items and more precisely the Scandinavian mid century modern design items is what we call Scandinavian design because that is how it started and everything else comes from that in terms of design in the Nordic countries, but anyway in styling our homes we mix MCM and contempoary, old and new, expensive and cheap , simple and rustic

    Done right Scandinavian can be cosy, unfortunately it rarely is and ends up feeling cold to me. Most Scandinavian homes I've visited in Norway and Sweden had a very distinct summer and winter feel. All light and bright in summer, but winter saw the addition of deep, rich colours and chunky textures to the light backbone.
    It's hard to pull off a good winter Scandinavian if you don't have a fireplace or wood stove; the sight, sound, warmth and smell of a wood fire is so important!

    "affordable" in Scandinavia we are all about the designer furnitures and that my friend, is not affordable 😭I think something to remember is that though it's simple we care a great deal about quality and design here, the things you do have are often timeless classics and people do care to have the real deal. Also, I love colour, like actual colour, you can definitely incorporate colour in Scandinavian design, I usually do it in small items, like pillows and blankets and posters cause they can be easily changed but I never compromise on furniture and get something colourful there. And please do get curtains, when it's dark out it's very very easy to look inside your home and see EVERYTHING and privacy is important 😂

      I think with Scandi as a style it is more heavy on IKEA and similar which is relatively affordable depending on which furniture you chose. Of course it is a income angle there and the bigger cities like Stockholm will likely have way more expensuve furniture than more rural/countryside.
      Also, I feeling pulling curtains together isn’t as common here excluding bedrooms.
      Instead we more often have blinders (persienner) we pull down to shield from view and sunlight.

    The Scandi style is an interesting approach. Very different from the Spanish. More interesting than the French. I still think I prefer the Sicilian.

    Some might disagree, but I think the reason a lot of us don't use carpets much is that most of our bathroom piping is infested with silverfish that munch on natural textile and sometime wander outside the bathroom, so it's best to keep floors clear. We just wear slippers or thick socks with non-slippery rubber soles to keep our feet warm when needed.
    If you really want to make your home look scandinavian, it's not so much about the colour palette and whatnot, but more about details and quality. For example, most scandinavian homes have at least one Nordic (we like Finland too) design classic, whether it's a Dala horse, a Morderna poster, a PH lamp, Rörstrand plates, a Gustavian painted cupboards, a sink waste gatherer, a cheese slicer, or Marimekko fabric etc. We all have at least one of these and we can spot scandi interiors right away by recognising them. Design is part of our cultural heritage, we often inherit those objects from our parents, and shops are never out of stock of them. If you go visit a Swede for instance, their home might just as likely be neutral and minimal or have warm colours with lots of wall art and flea-market finds, but you'll always find one of these design classics somewhere.
    We also tend to put accent lights on our windows in the winter, preferably the same type as everyone else in the building, for homogeneity. And traditionally we have little flags in the summer. Not because of nationalism but as a way to greet the warmer season and guests. We have them on our xmas trees too. It's just meant to be festive.
    Another thing: if you see something at IKEA that you don't consider to be Scandinavian, it just means that your definition of the style is too narrow (possibly restricted to modern Danish), because IKEA is the quintessential scandi store.

    You're speaking my language, Nick! Love, love, love Scandinavian design! 😁 I don't care my geographical location is not ideal for it. I'm going Scandi!! I'd like to incorporate these bar stools that I have inherited and are chrome and burgundy. Not sure how I'm gonna pull that off, will definitely keep the burgundy to the 10% (in the 70/20/10 color design theory). 🤔 Will be following the rest of your tips, though. 😉
    Thank you so much for the advice and the links! Excellent video, as always!! 😁👍

    As a Scandinavian 🇧🇻 I agree with a lot of these points, but there are some things I would like to add.
    - Cream is really not common in scandi style, if it is used it's usually a cold cream. Cool tones are more common than warm tones. Warm tones usually comes from natural items like wood furniture.
    - Carpets are used in scandi homes, but with purpose. Single colour, boho or oriental rugs are the most common in actual scandinavian homes.
    - Yes, we only get a few hours of daylight here, if any. In the north of Norway there is no daylight what so ever in the middle of the winter, but here in Bergen it's dark by 15:30. So outdoor Christmas lights (mainly warm white string lights) are super common to use to decorate outside.
    - Scandi homes usually have at least a couple old (often inherited) vintage pieces. It's great to break it up with some texture and character so it doesent get too modern and looking more minimalist.

      more recent trends I've been seeing for scandi homes is the incorporation of warmer tones like beige in walls, furniture etc. Cooler tones are still relevant but not as 'trendy' and is taking the back seat of things. Just my thoughts and observations.

      @@sl3772 Going to have to respectfully disagree, as a fellow British Columbian in Victoria, which is I think one of the most South West locations in Canada. We often hear announcers on PBS out of Seattle refer to their area as The Pacific Northwest, which it is, in the United States. I think you could say that Prince Rupert is in the Pacific North west, but over all, it seems to be a phrase used when referring to parts of Washington state. I think it has bled over the Canadian Southwest border. 😊

    Agree on your shopping recommendations but very mixed feelings on Rove concepts. While all the others do their own Scandi designs that are inspired by the origins you mention in the video, Rove does pure knock-offs of the classics like the Wegner wishbone chairs, Jacobsen Egg chair, Saarinen womb chair, etc. To me this is like buying counterfeit designer handbags. A lot of these items can be found vintage on ebay or other auctions, or it could be worth investing in a couple of pieces that are the real thing if this is your style. Design within Reach carries quite a few of these.

    So my style is very Scandi-meets-Mid-Century. I love the open, natural, earthy, comfy, and purposeful/functional aspect of scandi with the design lines and geometric shapes and wood finishes of the mid century furnitures and decor. HOWEVER haha my girlfriend has a style that is Industrial-meets-Boho. She loves bare wood and exposed iron and brick, but natural materials like jute and cotton and plants everywhere! We are trying to make our apartment feel like a happy combination of our styles and your videos are helping so much! I would love if after you finish these deep dives into each style, maybe you could do common combinations of different styles and what elements of each overlap and where to focus on blending the styles together!! Your video on combining two styles was helpful but i need more examples that breaks down the similarities of different designs 😊 loving your videos! Ive never subscribed to a channel faster than after discovering yours ❤️

    If you're a Scandinavian yourself you can see differences between the styles in our countries. Swedes tend to like white neoclassical pieces (sekelskifte), big tile stoves if you're lucky to have one. Danes are more midcentury modern with a lot of pieces from their own designers, they can sometimes be a bit more bold in their choices than Swedes.
    But a pretty spot on video. And take your shoes off indoors, no self respecting Scandinavian wears shoes indoors.

    I just discovered your channel and love how you talk and explain things. You have a really likable voice! But I hate it when these design styles are explained like they existed in a vacuum. Scandinavian design isn’t just one thing, and it isn’t in contrast to styles like mid-century modern (MCM). For one thing, Scandinavian design and MCM are deeply intertwined because Scandinavian designers (and manufacturers) of the mid-1950ies were very influential figures in MCM. Similarly, Japandi has become an online trend but its principles are actually pretty old, because Scandinavian and Japanese design have a *long* shared history. And when “farmhouse” is mentioned, people usually mean “American farmhouse” - but many things you see in articles about Scandinavian design could also be referred to as “Scandinavian cottage/country”.
    Keeping these terms separate gives easy 101 introductions but I think to fully understand them and take advantage of them, one needs to understand how many of these interior styles are interconnected.
