Hi just wondering if you’ve ever listened to ( or even heard of ) a U.K. group called ‘ fair port convention’ ? In their early days a lot of the folk music is very ‘ harp like’ , songs like ‘ little Marty groves’, ‘ the sailors life’ and ‘ Forteringay’. Really nice music🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉I’ll send some links if your interested in expanding your repertoire🎉🎉🎉🎉
A harp is a beautiful instrument, especially for therapy. Even just noodling around in a pentatonic scale of 5 notes. Great info for someone looking for a wonderful instrument
The only complaints I've ever had with harp were the calluses! Especially when I was younger and playing with an orchestra in my city. I would always get such fun pieces but boy, were the blisters and calluses abundant because of how much I practiced! Nowadays I don't have a space large enough for my pedal harp so it lives at my parents' house but I have a smaller lever harp I play every so often just to keep up the skill. My dream is to save up enough money to move into a house and out of my apartment just so I can have space for my pedal harp. Also so I don't have to worry about disturbing neighbors!
Yes, that's the impression that I was under - both with guitar (though you can play a guitar with a pick) and harp, which is part of the reason that I never learned either. I did learn piano when I was young and am now (retired) relearning it, though it is a lot of work.
It very much depends on the type of harp you play, and how long you spend practicing. The harp I play most these days has much lower string tension than a pedal harp, and it’s not very hard on your fingers at all! So if that’s a priority when you’re considering learning harp, I would go for a Celtic harp with nylon strings, rather than a gut string harp made by a pedal harp company 😊
The harp is a beautiful instrument both in its appearance and sound. My first experience of the harp came after watching comedian Harpo Marx play. Truly a gifted musician. While I dont know that I'd ever learn to play the harp, it is definitely one of the most beautiful instruments. Thank you for the informative video.
I still don't know much about harp and have to take lessons to learn the right techniques, but having experience with piano I was able to play songs on it right away. I absolutely love the sound, the vibration of the strings embrace your soul while playing! It feels like you are inside of the music!
I'm agree with you, I finally found my music instruments. I'm try to play violin 🎻 before, but i still don't know how to play it. In the end I sold my violin 🎻.
Have you seen what Indian American harpist Sheela Bringi is doing? She has studied Indian Classical music with Pandit G.S. Sachdev and Ustaad Aashish Khan.
@@LearningtheHarp as a Classical musician myself and with all due respect to you and your instrument, i am a fan of harp. Sheela does not play Indian classical music on harp . She uses harp as an accompaniment just like we have harmonium in indian classical music. The form requires Mandatory abilities to bend the notes and play the phrases which involves notes which are not adjusted as per western frequencies along with 'gamak' ornamentation.
It’s louder than a guitar when it’s picked, but it has a mellow sound so when a guitar is being enthusiastically strummed it can be hard to hear the harp - I know this from playing with my very enthusiastic guitarist husband! 😂
@@LearningtheHarp Thank you. I have been wondering for a while if a harp would be too loud and disturb my neighbours. I'm starting to think that it's probably not too loud.
@@AlexR_89 I live in an apartment and play a 27-string Camac Odyssey, which is a medium-sized harp (halfway between a lap and floor lever harp). I haven't had any complaints yet from my neighbours. :)
@@AlexR_89it also depends on the type of harp! The heavier the instrument, and the more massive the sound box and the more bass strings it has, the more likely it is to disturb your neighbours. I know some pedal harpists who have had complaints from their neighbours. In my experience, lever harps with 34 strings or fewer aren't quite as resonant even if they have quite a full sound within the room they're played in, and they're less likely to be considered too loud in the next room.

Very good video 👍🏻 thank you for that!

The nice thing about being a harp player is that there aren't many of them around. Once word gets out that you play, your phone will start to ring.

Do you play in an orchestras? When did you first start to play the Harp? It sounds like a piano.
Great video, very informative👏🏻 I have a 26 string lever harp❤

I love my Celtic harp, it was so hard to find one! I was really turned onto it by watching Omnia, the wife plays amazing!
Really interesting intro about Harps Christy-Lyn 😊
As a fellow harpist myself, this was so well explained! I learned some new things that I never knew a harp could do too- thanks for sharing 🥰
Oh great! 😃🙌🏻 Thanks for the sweet supportive comment 💕
A great informative video, although it certainly takes me A LOT longer to tune my harp than 2 minutes! 😅
😅❤️
This is a wonderful video! Engaging, informative, and uplifting. Thank you for sharing!
Thanks for the sweet comment 🥰
Wonderful informative video! Good job!
THANK YOU VERY MUCH MA!😊❤

How loud is a harp compared to other instruments? Perhaps compared to an acoustic guitar being strummed?

Is a C flat a B?
Yes, but on pedal harp it would be played using the C string, so it feels very different to playing a B natural 😊👍🏻
