    Interesting switching moves. I worked for ServiceMaster at the Irving Oil refinery and watched NBSR deliver and pick up cars.

    Glad you mentioned the hand brakes. Taking some time to do that slows things down like it should. Nice work!

    The ethanol plant is one of the most spectacular operations on your layout. I could just spend an entire day just switching cars there and never have to go to another facility. Great job indeed!👍👍

    I always figured that switching out cars from a yard to an industry wasn't a quick process. However, I'm amazed between this video and your yard classification videos exactly how many steps ahead you must consider. It's much more in depth than I initially thought. You do make it seem simple, doesn't hurt that you are a little bit of an expert tho lol. Great videos, I love the realism from your layout, to the trains themselves to the actual operation. I'm so glad I found your channel.

    I'll echo others' comments showing appreciation for your detailed operations explanations. I'm merely an interested party regarding railroads and how they work with only a basic understanding of how things actually work. Your videos are fascinating to both watch and listen to.

    I like seeing that old BN hopper.
    Do railroads keep instructions on how to work an industry for crew that may be unfamiliar with the best way to approach an operation like ADM?

    • @SeaboardCentral
      @SeaboardCentral  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      New hires spend months training which includes working all local routes so they can learn how to work each industry. In addition, there are often industry reference guides. Lastly, if a newly marked up conductor is unfamiliar with a particular location, the engineer usually has years of experience and can help provide more information.

    Great videos Tim! For those who may be like me and are looking to develop and use a version of your paperwork on our layouts I am wondering how you create the track inventory and industry work order in the computer? I remember in one video you mentioned you created templates in MS Word. How do you use those templates to create the paperwork from session to session? Would you or are you planning to show that process in a video?

      Thanks! I plan on making a video on it right after the June Layout Update that is coming up. Stay tuned!

    Nice smooth operation with that GP-30 pair. But a question. The actual number of cars you are switching could easily be handled by one HO loco pulling 2.5 oz or more. You always like a pair. To give the feeling of a bigger operation, closer to a prototype handling large industries with many cars, or just because you like the look and feel of a loco pair? Are the pairs NCE consisted or do they both just have the same address?
    I am REALLY enjoying all your episodes on the new SC, and eagerly looking forward to the completed helix linking Ragland to the yard.

    • @SeaboardCentral
      @SeaboardCentral  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks! Railroaders use what they are given. Only time tonnage ratings are factored is on mainline through freight. For example, yesterday on the prototype I switched a yard with a GP38-3/GP60/SD40-2 set.
      The units are advanced consisted with an NCE system.

  • @25mfd
    @25mfd 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    nice switching tim... and too bad for ADM that their lead doesn't extend further so they can switch that ethanol track... now their stuck paying an intra-plant switch fee... so what's next on the layout construction agenda, the yard lead extension or the helix... or maybe alternate work between both

    • @SeaboardCentral
      @SeaboardCentral  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Thanks! No fee for switching the ethanol track. An inter plant switching fee has to do with specific spot locations. Example: an industry orders a car from one of their storage tracks to spot 1 on another track. Or sometimes even moving a car off a specific spot back to their storage track. These types of industries are known as closed gate industries and they will actually order cars in by number. The ADM facility is the same as National Cement and is an open gate facility. This means whatever shows up at the serving yard can be brought to the industry to be placed. Any cars that won’t fit inside the facility will be assessed a demurrage fee due to track full.
      Next up is completion of the helix. Stay tuned for the next layout update.

      *Any cars that won’t fit inside the facility will be assessed a demurrage fee due to track full*
      hey tim this ALMOST sounds like bunching...
      last night i was reading some accessorial charges on a few railroads online... the ones i read said they will NOT provide any relief for extra charges associated with bunching... i read railroads used to provide some relief but not anymore

    • @SeaboardCentral
      @SeaboardCentral  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Yes, each car has a trip plan associated with the move while it is moving to destination. The relief only comes from railroad associated delays while on the terminating carrier. This is how they can get relief when it is the railroad’s fault for delaying a group of cars from reaching their destination according to the trip plan. However most of the time it is the customers fault due to ordering too many loads at the same timeframe. And some are willing to pay it to keep from losing a big contract. Think of a concrete plant that has a big job and they want to ensure they have enough cement hoppers on hand to keep up with supply. They can’t risk the delay.
