Thanks once again to Cullens for a genuine conversation on the difference in climate and lifestyle between Calif and Oregon in general. I've live in both environments during my life time. I lived in L.A. Calif for 20 years and now for 50 years in Oregon. The two place offer differences in climate. L.A. is a semi arid Mediterranean rated climate and Portland is a warm moderate Mediterranean Climate. Summers in Portland are warm and dry and winters are wet with frequent cloudy skys or overcast. The plus side to the rain (average 36 inches in Portland) is plenty of greenery, lush forest and vegetation, lakes, rivers, and creeks. Aaron is correct when he mentions the January depression that can bother the newcomer to the Portland area. I think every new person feels that around January the first year they live here. But if you get past the first year, you learn to accept the rain as a plus for the beauty of nature that depends on that very moisture. To me it was a choice of L.A. smog or Portland rain. I made that choice for my young family 50 years ago and it was the right one for sure. Life is great in the Pacific NW. P.S. Aaron...Thanks for including your co-star, Mrs. Cullen. She has a wonderful vibe about herself.
I love this state and this city. I wouldn't live anywhere else. Well... maybe back in my homeland of South Korea. 😜
I just love the vibe here. The weather doesn't bother me. The only reason I'd be somewhere else is for better golf weather. But that's not a big enough deal for me to live somewhere else.
Lake Oswego and Portland are two entirely different worlds.
Two entirely different worlds! - I don't agree with that. The great thing about Portland is there are many many different parts of the city to live and each will give you a different local experience. BUT they are all similar in the fact that we all make up Portland Metro. We all go visit the beaches, mountains, rivers, lakes, all the same.
Except for Oswego Lake, which is private ;) Again, two different worlds. Lake Oswego is not Portland, it is a very rich affluent suburb close to Portland. We don't have to agree but I've lived in Oregon my entire life (I'm 36) so I do have some local perspective that perhaps a more recent California transplant wouldn't. I appreciate your positivity in grouping everything together but maybe you'll see it clearer once the honeymoon phase or business interests (you sell real estate right?) wears off. @@movingtoportlandoregon
I've lived in many states, cities, and countries. Metro Portland is right up there in among my favorite cities. In fact it just made the top of a list as most hip cities. Every city has its issues, so make it the experience you want.
Interesting your perspective. The biggest adjustment to moving from Wyoming is that there is no winter. Only three seasons here, with occasional sub-freezing. But it's great to live in the big city.

We’re finally making the moves necessary to move from San Diego to Oregon! Not sure what city we should move to yet. We’re a family of 6 with young children and we want to live somewhere safe, walkable and relatively inexpensive any ideas? We will take all the advice we can get!

How about living in Gresham area and work in Beaverton, i mean the traffic… Do you think is going to be very hard?
Hi, that is longer commute, I would put in the exact points of driving in google maps and adjust the time for commuting to see what the average time is. Great tool! Probably around 45min.

Hi J, at this stage of my life I prefer the suburbs to live but enjoy going to the city. Portland is full of nice people. I think it’s more about the type of lifestyle you want. That’s what will dictate the best fit for you. Feel free to reach out if you would like to discuss.

We moved from the Bay Area to the Willamette Valley about 80 miles south of Portland in October 2020. Of many things we like better here is the noticeable lack of thievery, trash on the streets, graffiti, loud fireworks M80 type, respect for people and basic kindness is much more prevalent here. The neighborhood is clean 98% of the time...there is no sense of imminent danger from crime. COVID pushed SF over the edge on which it was teetering for years.

I'm happy to report to you that my youtube channel has 0 influence on the housing market in Portland or nationally, where we have seen housing prices go up across the US up to 40% in the last 5 years. PS - I love the weather here but it is nice to go on a warm and sunny vacation in February!
