what a great film maker and a talented actor ... but his modesty is his greatest weapon. I wish there were more people like him. was better for the world. my greatest respect for this man. thank you for this great upload ❤️🙌🏾🌏 p,s i love that he always say (not realy) loooool
As someone who reads literature very little, with the exception of the study of themes of particular literature movements, I find your comment quite comforting :,D
Great insight by one of my favorite directors. The part about reading is very important. I'm pretty sure he is not saying we should go and read about filming methodology but to read stories, newspapers, articles, etc. How do you think he found out about La Soufière or about Fitzcarraldo? You get to those stories by reading, paying attention to your surroundings, and having curiosity about these external events. Immerse yourself in random Wikipedia articles, click the links to other things mentioned in the article that you might not be aware of. Read, read, read.
It was good working on the set in the documentary The White Diamond, The name I had given to Dr graham now they don't seem to remember me but they all very good people
I think Herzog may have a point. I wish it wasn't the case, because I prefer watching films to reading. After watching thousands of films (varying in many many ways) I can assure you that my imagination hasn't gotten much bigger, and my writing ability hasn't improved. Watching films gave me a greater knowledge of cinema, but not a greater knowledge of crafting it. I think it's high time for me to start experimenting with a camera again (and reading more). Hope this helped.
Martin Scorsese is a clown who had to be begged by a golden boy like Jonah Hill to let him act in "Wolf of Wall Street", but who thought that Leo DiCaprio is an actual actor. He is waaaaaaay past his prime and completely lost touch after Goodfellas... which in fact is the best gangster film ever made and towers over the Godfather in my humble opinion.
He was too vague in his description. He should have been clear that he meant reading helps us create our own images which we can express through films.
I read at least a couple books a month. It's simple and everyone could do it. Even if you just read for fifteen or twenty minutes before bed you could easily crack a book each month.
A man of solidly defined announcements. Remember, these are only valid for him. He also left his predecessors behind and did 🎥 his way, from the cuff so to say. That's all that I'm saying. Skill is contingently spread among humans. Imitation isn't skill but just a cheap copy.
I can't read books, I get bored. If anything, draw. Draw whatever the fuck comes into your mind. Reading helps with storytelling, drawing and photography help with visual stuff. Do both.
Mishta Romaniello I feel the same when reading, but why do you think that is? I’m trying to figure how someone can just sit and read books after books daily without finding it dull, is it that they don’t have anything better to do or are we the wrong ones for not doing so...
"Collective Dreams", like Jung spoke of? You, (werner) said that the psychology movement "ruined the 20th century"! I really would give anything to talk to him! He is my favotite man alive right now, my, what a real, INTELLIGENT, INCREDIBLE, BRAVE, NATURAL man! And YERS, READ !!!! Right on.
Werner Herzog was very vague in his description. He was talking about reading how to make films, not reading novels. I NEVER said reading doesn't induce imagination. You misinterpreted what Herzog said and what I said. The fact that you think I'm trying to sound superior means you are intimidated.
I fail to understand why anyone interviews someone so contrarian. I mean, most of the time you already know his answer. It’s the opposite of whatever you said....
I speak German myself but I don't understand why he talks with such a strong german accent. He should be speaking better because he speaks a lot English. Maybe it's his "character"...
Some people just don't have the ability to make a new language their own. They may build up a big vocabulary but somehow their new language remains a "tool" that they use. He also keeps using German phrases translated word by word into English.
I'm not American and believe me I am not a good example of your typical citizen. You do not get imagination from reading. Expose a young director to many vast and varying films as possible then give them a camera and a computer and see what they do. That is how you find good directors without being pretentious.
I love how he basically answered everything with not really

My favourite man on this planet.
I want him to shout “you are failing” in my face.
Herzog when he says 'read,' means reading everything.

Trying to imitate Verner is one of the funnest things to do
Very illuminating. Happy New Year! 🎉
I love how warm and friendly he comes across in real life when he is capable of playing such bastards as in Jack Reacher and Mandalorian.
Werner Herzog is ASMR
What M ?
Do you have any ?
Yeah I know. He should have been clear that he meant reading helps us create our own images which we can express through films.

10 years later, I've experienced the exact same dilemma. Glad to know I wasn't the only one.
What was his advice for young filmmakers again?
Did he say Arvo Part?

I imagine when your mind is relatively empty you can notice those little discrepancies don't know if you keep your mind occupied with important things
