    Thanks for doing this video! With your set up, can you program the tables to move a fraction of an inch or any length with a touch of a button?
    I want to build a rifle bolt jeweling set up.
    Thanks

      I always used a CAM program to develop the tool paths. I can jog the machine around or tell the machine to go to a specific coordinate by manually entering G code in the MDI block, is tha more of what you are asking?

    Wow that is pricey !
    More than the mill.
    Thinking of making my own kit.
    Ball screws are not that expensive

      Mark Giza have you priced out other CNC mills? $1500 is a bargain for a CNC machine.

    • @RivalMachining

      Looking back, this machine was a gateway drug. It let me see the potential of a 3 axis mill in the garage but didn't have the work envelope or rigidity to tackle most aluminum projects. It didn't take long to jump to the Tormach. If I didn't have the budget, I would live with this, but wouldn't try to start a business with it again.

    That's cool you have it hooked up yo a computer in the garage! Is that where you edit your videos too

    Was there a reason why you bought a kit literally with parts that you could have made with your mini mill for just a fraction of what you paid for that kit.

    • @RivalMachining
      @RivalMachining  ปีที่แล้ว

      I didn't have a way to turn the ends of the ballscrews and having a machine shop make 1 offs would have cost more than the kit.

    I’m trying to decide between desktop pro from cnc router parts, or a super X 3 mini mill for aluminum!???????

    • @RivalMachining
      @RivalMachining  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Personally, I wouldn't try a router on aluminum. I know some folks have made it work, but they really just don't have the rigidity for anything harder than wood or plastic. The ones I've seen on TH-cam use a fixed gantry.

    Hi bud could you tell me the total cost of this conversion? I’m deciding whether to buy cnc desktop or convert manual mill.
    Thanks a bunch

    • @RivalMachining

      I paid roughly $1500 for the setup. $500 for the mill, $700 for the hardware kit, $200 for the electronics, and $60 for a used PC. I'm sure there are also some odds and ends. I hope that helps!

      Can I ask about the electronics... what components did you use to do it for just $200. And did you follow a tutorial for hooking it all up.

    How accurate is the mill post conversion?

    • @RivalMachining
      @RivalMachining  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If I remember correctly, the Z axis was a little messed up and had about .010" of play, but the x and y are probably within .005". It's not bad for making small parts, just not cut out for aerospace. The bigger issues I ran into was overall rigidity of the column. It's just not made for high cutting forces.

      @@RivalMachining that's understandable. I have a couple of things that I may need done in the future and all my machines are manual so it would be impossible for me to do.. I'd love to have a cnc but I don't have one yet. I have fusion 360 (for my 3d printer) so I can make the program and just send it to you if it's compatible with your tormach?

      @@RivalMachining You mentioned in another video that you had problems with your machine missing / skipping steps after you milled a bunch of plastic. If your ballscrews had wipers, do you think this would have happened?

    • @RivalMachining
      @RivalMachining  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@IceTurf I bet it would help, but I doubt it would completely solve the problem. The worst axis is the Z because the ballscrew is uncovered directly behind the table. A better solution, but more design work would be to either put it behind or inside the column. The X axis would be better if the ball screw sat higher into the table. At least the machine stops when it loses steps with the closed loop steppers.

    That mill will shake it's self to death cutting at those high movement speeds. Your using a cnc conversion kit anyhow. Hit a button and walk away. If you bought a 500$ speed should be your last thing on your mind lol

    • @RivalMachining
      @RivalMachining  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I agree, but what I ran into was slowing the feeds too much results in the tool rubbing instead of cutting. The cutter needs to take a bite of material each time, typically at least a few tenths or it will wear the tool out.

  • @TheFeralEngineer

      That's a bummer. I was hoping my issues were just a fluke.

    • @TheFeralEngineer
      @TheFeralEngineer 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@RivalMachining the names have changed, but the bullshit's still the same. Dude's selling "premium" ball screw kits that amount to (supposedly) being a Thompson ball screw with a Chinese nut - with no guarantee that the screw he sends for the 200 dollar upcharge is even a Thompson brand. The nuts have to have the flange modified to clear the castings, which was done on the Y but not the X. Ask him to do the X when you send back the screw because the assembly is binding up (with which he accuses you of just not knowing about "preload" and tells you to stop bad mouthing his business), he forgets. Ask him to send another nut that's already modified, he sends a sloppy junk nut with a mile of play. Luckily I know a lot of people with machine shops that I do mutual favors for, so they helped me out. Got the Y casting modified to clear the X nut, took the other side of the original nut to the bench grinder to clear the underside of the table, had the motor plates modified because the motors don't sit deep enough in the recesses... That whole ordeal was a 3 month nightmare of back and forth emails, parts and trips to the machine shop
