UPDATE: This video is slightly outdated now! A couple of days ago, some more screenshots of Sonic 1 TTS prototype that we’ve…*ahem*…never seen, were found in the September 1990 issue of Game Boy magazine! twitter.com/WindiiGitlord/status/1748255009001595207
I love that you mentioned the oppressive surrealist atmosphere Sonic 1 has. The only other time a Sonic has felt like this to me is Sonic CD and the concept art for Heroes and the Advenutre games. Stuff like this really captures the imagination. I hope we get more like it some day.
Yeah, it's funny - I lost interest in Sonic exactly at the point the games started leaning into more real world themes. The 90s psychedelic edge was an integral part of Sonic for me.
That "oppressive surrealist atmosphere" is something I think the US soundtrack for Sonic CD nails in particular. I love both soundtracks but the US one is so much more moody and atmospheric.
That Sparkling Zone background is really interesting because the colorful buildings and flashing signs remind me of downtown Hong Kong City. Which makes sense because Oshima's concept art for Sonic 1 features level designs that looked like Asiatic like settings.
I completely forgot about the fake chaos emerald in Adventure 2's story. Thinking about now, I want to believe that since it was Sonic's first time using Chaos Control, it used up all of the fake emeralds energy, thus making the emerald obsolete. However in the Dark story, Shadows last fight against Sonic in space seems to contradict this idea since Sonic uses Chaos Control if you go too far ahead. If the fake emerald still has energy then it is likely stashed away with the hero side, and I doubt any of them would dispose of such a powerful gem knowing the repercussions could be catastrophic if it fell in the hands of the wrong person.
Ironically for me, the fake emerald holds a special place in my heart for leading up to one of the best quotes in the game: Tails: "But how did you know it was a fake?" Eggman: "Because... you just told me!" The look on Tails' face is priceless.
0:21 So true. The difficulty of this game isn’t even that hard, and I feel like the zones we get are pretty balanced (Spring Yard, Green Hill, and Star Light Zone are some of the faster stages while Scrap Brain, Labyrinth, and Marble Zone are more slower paced stages).
It was difficult when I was 4 years old. But I got good eventually. I didn't get all of the Chaos Emeralds until I was like in middle school i think? Anyway after seeing the ending being slightly different, now I just finish the game normally. It's still fun and i pop into a special stage whenever a giant ring pops up at the end of an act, but it's no biggie if i miss an emerald or two. Besides I know a secret code that lets me start the game with an emerald before the first act even starts!
Gotta say, I realy love your vids! I am currently watching them all completely, and your coverage on Sonic 2's history was incredible! And I am surprised (and a bit jealous LOL) that you got so many subs this quickly! Congrats!
I don't think the 1990 Tokyo Toy Show demo had audio at all, so the early Green Hill Zone music was only used in the TeraDrive demo. In Masa's demo tapes of the Sonic 1 and Sonic 2 OST, there is one track simply titled "Theme of Sonic the Hedgehog Demo" which was never used in the game at all, and is based on the ending theme in the final build.
I mean, the seventh emerald showed up out of nowhere with varying explanations and was later retconned into always existing, with no unique properties. So I don't see the problem with Tails creating an eighth, Great Value Chaos Emerald. Also it's very possible it's just broken, or something. Sonic chucks it into the Eclipse Cannon to make it explode (which is the only real plothole of SA2, afaik), and then it's not seen at all in the Last Story. Maybe being "less powerful than the real one" includes "durability".
Yeah I went to his house and he showed me his collection! I couldn’t believe Shadow owned physical copies of Mega Man: The Wily Wars, Alien Soldier, and Golden Axe III, but he did. He’s a diehard Sega Genesis collector ;)
Tbh it's cool that u pointed out the vibe which Sonic 1 gives, it made me think of Crash Bandicoot for PS1 Tbh 3 act structure is fine. It way better than 5 acts in KC, i was badly shocked when i played the game & that happend Also i never heard of people disliking Sonic 1's title cards. Those were cool Also i kinda don't understand how getting all chaos emeralds frees all animals
I thought I was the only one who felt Sonic 1s mildly oppressive atmosphere another game in the franchise that cranks this feeling up to a hundred is Sonic CD the game has very unsettling undertones much worse than Sonic 1 and your lack of action to prevent bad futures from occurring further emphasize the environmentalist allegory because you directly see the results of your actions in every 3rd act of each stage only Sonic 1 & CD have this property
@@shadamyandsonamyloverI used the spiteful tone as a joke, I’m not actually upset about it at all, I just thought it would be a funny gag whenever I brought up confusing Sonic lore. Sorry if I didn’t make that clear :D
@@The1SunshineFeeler thanks for the clarification. =) you make good videos, I watched quite a few today in the background during work. Your Sonic manga one was especially enjoyable.
Not sure how an environmentalist message is somehow “dark done right” or even “dark” at all. That, combined with the poor summaries of some of the stories like SA2 and Frontiers just feels like a really forced and poor attempt to complain about Sonic games having stories that actually have some depth instead of making simplistic badly written stories.
SA2 has depth, eh? Come on, man. It had the drama of a cheesy soap opera crossed with a Michael Bay blockbuster. Enjoyable, fun story that goes for the heartstrings at the very end, but it’s not deep or even all that good. It’s utterly amazing to me how the Sonic fanbase has taken to love and cherish all the things they complained about in the series like 20 years ago.
@@BareBandSubscription A meaningless argument with no points that relies solely on complaining about it? Sounds like the average “criticism” that most Sonic stories get,a story can be good without needing to be a cinematic masterpiece and can have actual stakes instead of treating its characters like bland caricatures. Funny considering that most people (even IGN itself) praised SA2 along its story so if anything you’re an example of people pulling a 180 on their opinions for no real reason besides being contrarians.
@@Cr102y What are you talking about? I’m just saying the story for SA2 is cheesy and not that good. It’s fine, it does the job, but that’s it. Maybe broaden your horizons and try taking in stories that have, idk, subtext? Or total cohesion? Like I don’t know why you think that story is that good, and I couldn’t care less about a “deep” story in a Sonic game. Also, every Sonic game has stakes. Chill.

That Apple Arcade Sonic game is the closest game that has a surrealist atmosphere, however it's not gloomy or oppressive like 1 or CD.

If they can make Chaos Drives, they can make fake Chaos Emeralds.

14:52 YES DUDE! My thoughts exactly. I felt that this level order works perfectly, even before watching. I'm so glad somebody else agrees.
mans got that diamond in the sky trap remix
I wish more people would talk about the atmosphere and level theming of Sonic 1, it's greatly overlooked.

In my opinion, the slow Sonic 1 stages would be PERFECT for a New Super Mario Bros hack.
