    No expanded bench. Different times.

    This is fascinating to watch. Never knew it existed. Plenty of VFL legends Dick Reynolds (#3) and Bill Hutchison (#7), including some of their goals. That Essendon #24 felled is Jack Jones, now 91. Carlton captain is Ern Henfry. Thanks heaps for posting this.

      @J G Nice to see you're out of the psych hospital. The bad news is it didn't help.

    Amazing footage. WWII still fresh in their minds. Would be amazing to go back in time and be at that match.

      @J G soccer is number one sport in the world but unfortunately not in Australia. The Australian soccer league is weak and pathetic

    This is really interesting. And the skills weren't that bad back then given they all had day jobs and footy was basically a hobby. Some of those blokes were better on their non-preferred foot than players now! Thanks for uploading.

    Check out the long drop kicks... magic to see them again... one went about 70m :)

      long driving drop kicks was the expression / cliche

    I remember the drop-kick, and the torpedo punt was not uncommon. But if even a bottom team today went back in a time machine, it would annihilate the best teams of yesteryear: when the game was mainly a bomd it high and hope a team mate would take the pack mark. Today, the strategy is much more complex, more entertaining and much faster (two umpires to keep up). Of course, some will disagree.

    I wonder who this doco was made for &/or where it was shown at the time it was made?

    At 1:25 as the Essendon players run out, you'll notice two of them have their sashes going in opposite direction to their team mates.

      Yes, I recently saw footage of South Melbourne from the 1909 Grand Final with some players wearing opposite sashes.

    Did anyone see me? I’m the middle age bloke in the crowd with the hat and grey suit!.

    I love the fact that a couple of Essendon players have their sashes on the wrong side of the jumper,

    Fascinating. Knowing what was going on at the time with throwing the ball being legal in the VFA, it's pretty clear that the ANFC has filled this piece with kicking and marking and dodging highlights to try to sway people back to the traditional code. I think I only heard one passing reference to a handpass in the whole thing.

    • @davecannabis
      @davecannabis 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      yeah he called it a "punch pass"

    5:59 who are those officials running up to him? Runners and trainers don't have such uniforms these days.

    Go blues, the commentary is another feature of the game.

    This was just a few years before John Coleman was playing for Essendon.
    Imagine what his high mark would have looked like in this film.

    The golden days before the corporate Afl ruined Aussie Rules!!

    Thank you for sharing. I enjoyed watching that. We have never got over our inferiority complex. The jingoism is too much in this. I watch all ball games and his claims about Australian Rules are ridiculous.

    It's always 1 point against Essendon. Love it. 1999 semi final was a good un too.

      +Axometer *Prelim Final. If you are going to remember games in which you narrowly beat us, let me remind you of both games of 2013, both games you should have won, but didn't. Allow me to also remind you of the 1993 grand final.... not close, but still a great game.

      Six games played each round during the home and away season in Melbourne would attract up to 150,000 fans to the various venues . The MCG back then was exclusively the home venue to Melbourne FC and was where the finals were played due to its large crowd capacity .

    How bloody awful was football played then! Just kick anywhere and hope for the best.

    • @Gezza1967
      @Gezza1967  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Robert Stevens, though the benefit of kicking to contest for example is you’d actually watch more contested footy not keepings off like today.
      That included more pack marks.

    • @paulohara8967
      @paulohara8967 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      These days a free kick is awarded for any team that kicks the ball out of bounds on the full. Even deliberate out of bounds attracts a penalty.

    • @johnbell5021
      @johnbell5021 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      That was great tough footy. Players didn't "play on the outside" like they do today. Man on man key positions Full time day jobs and training. Tough as guts. So called tattooed tough guys today wouldn't hold a candle to those lads

    • @TheBinaryWolf
      @TheBinaryWolf ปีที่แล้ว

      You are sooooo correct. The only part of the game that has not progressed is goal-kicking accuracy.
