- My friend Tom brought over his chainsaw and was helping me as I was cutting up some wood with it. We were both amazed at how beautiful this wood was once it was cut - we really had no idea what to expect :) Sometimes I'm really surprised at how beautiful wood is on the inside when it's hard to tell what it's going to look like from the outside. Once all the slices were cut, I was really excited about making an art piece out of them. I guess you could say I really put my heart into this one :)

I am "Fascinated" by the way you see and can put together the idea that you see in your mind and then relay it to your medium, WOOD!!!!!!!!!!! This piece reminds me of a July 4th Fireworks Burst or Starburst.... "BURST"....... How did you see this different way to put the wood together in your mind instead of your usual way of the space betrix and the wire suspension.....REALLY GREAT JOB HOLDING MY ATTENTION AS I WATCHED THIS ONE NOT ONCE BUT TWICE, GREAT JOB, SIR SCOTT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Great way of looking at the piece! I have to admit, I didn't see it that way but once again you've given me new perspective :) My goal with this piece was to use the best parts of the wood and use as many pieces as I could......and I really had no idea what the art piece would look like when I began the layout. I just knew that I could make something good by using the most beautiful parts of the wood. The design evolved as I started cutting the pieces and I just had to trust that everything was going to work out in the end :) My feeling was that the wood was so beautiful that I just had to make it work :)

That's my friend Tom. He brings over his chainsaw once in a while and lets me use it to cut wood for my projects. Every once in a while he cuts some but he mostly likes to help me as I do the cutting. I mentioned him before in another video - and he's been seen in a few - but I probably should have mentioned him in this one - since this was his first "speaking" part. He doesn't really seem interesting in being in my videos but just likes to come over and cut wood and hang out. He may start helping me do the polyurethane on some of the projects too, we've been talking about that. Maybe one day I'll talk him into a making a cameo if he's interested :)

No.....you are awesome!!! It's my fault for not telling you that your comment inspired me to change the description. Your comments mean a lot to me and are very important to me. The old saying goes.... "Fan The Flames Of Passion And It Will Take You Far!!!" In your case Sir Scott... It has you starting a new kind of wood wall art!!!!!!! Hope you are selling these for thousands of dollars on line not hundreds or you will starve at those price you loose money as it takes a day or more to do the project..............When you look in the center it looks like it is give the illusion that the center is far away and is going away!!! Not just 3D but more!!!!

Scott, I just recently found your channel, and have watched quite a few of your videos already, despite my being very busy creating Christmas gifts for my children, family & friends... out of wood, naturally! :)
Nothing like what you are doing... just some recycled pallet wood stuff mostly, and messing around with hardwood glue-ups and the like.
You really do some truly amazing work though Scott, and are an inspiration, I think, to others who like working with their hands and tools creating things from wood. But even more than that perhaps, is that by doing what you do, and sharing it too, I think you fire people's imaginations as they watch you exercise yours, as well as their appreciation of outstanding art! And that is one of the things that glues me to the screen when I'm watching you, aside from seeing the final piece you're working on... but the excitement of watching you as you gather and select your materials, transport them to your workstation, the lay them all out within arms reach (or sometimes a serious stretch) on the table in front of you, and then watch you do this whole series of processes where you move the pieces around to different positions, different angles, etc., as if checking each possibility and assessing it for something one might call "the right fit" or that "right spark", inspiration, or maybe just a realization that "yeah, this looks pretty cool!" I hope you keep creating and sharing your work Scott, as I really like the way you think, and act, and dig watching you work when you are creating!
Oh, meant to ask you too (2nd edit)... I noticed in several videos that you use a light grayish-brown sealer or paint on your backboards (plywood, etc.) that you mount your pieces to, and you also seem to do your final seal with some kind of poly? I wondered if you mind sharing what these two things are and why you apply them in the ways that you do? Thanks Scott!
Well said Bill. I appreciate the well thought out comment. You have a really good understanding of what I'm trying to do in these videos. The main idea is to give other's inspiration and get them to exercise their imaginations so they can get better at doing their own projects and think up new ones :) ......and also to help people look at old wood in new ways. I'm learning to do the same thing myself every time I do a project :) I'm never going to master it - it's a continuous learning process with no end in sight :)
The backer board paint is just a brown acrylic paint. No particular color. On some (but not all) of my earlier videos I used a mistint that I got at Sherwin Williams but ended up liking the color so much that I had a gallon mixed up at Lowe's to match the mistint color - on a lot of the videos I used a quart container - which I poured the paint into from the gallon container since it's easier to move the quart container around as I'm painting :) The idea of the paint is to make the backer board blend in with the wood color so that people don't notice the backer board as much when they look at the art pieces from the sides - and sometimes the backer board is visible in the front so the brown paint helps make it less obvious. I also like the way the art pieces look on the backs - the backs are essentially their own art pieces - although not displayed in this way - so I want them to look good :) I mostly use Zar interior oil-based clear antique flat polyurethane on my wood art pieces - like this one here. But I occasionally use Minwax water-based polycrylic.

I have heard some woodworkers complain that polyurethane sometimes has a yellowing effect on some of their woods. I suspect that with the dark, rich-looking woods, this may not be an issue, and that it only makes the woods look much darker and richer, but wondered if you notice anything like that over time on your finished pieces? Thanks again Scott. Much appreciated.
Well thanks Bill, that means a lot to me. I do my best but sometimes I wonder if my videos are really accomplishing the goal of inspiring people??? - so it's good to hear you're getting some inspiration from them :)
Yes, oil-based poly can have a yellowing effect on some woods. Water-based poly doesn't in my experience, it's clearer, however polyurethane isn't something I'm an expert on. I only know what works best for me on certain pieces. In my experience, all polyurethanes - both oil and water-based, make the wood darker. Most of my wood art pieces are done with oil-based poly. I think it looks better on certain woods and brings out the richness of the wood better. However, some of my wood art pieces and a lot of my picture frames are done with water-based poly. There's a lot of different reasons why I may choose one or the other but I usually do what I feel is best for the project and will make it look as good as possible. Too much to cover in this response, and like I said I'm not an expert on it but I know there's some good videos here on youtube on the subject. Just search oil-based vs. water based poly. I've watched some of these videos in the past.....although it's been awhile.....but some of them can be helpful :)

Hi Scott I am in the UK and assume your in the USA, I dont know if you have ever worked with Yew timber it has a creamy white outer sap wood with light reddish brown heart, I have made several coffee tables over the years with book matched pieces of two inch thick planks with one edge sawn straight,and the outer edges left rough complete with bark which usually remains firmly attached, I have never tried filling in the blemishes with epoxy or making wall art but one day I will. good luck to you Keith Clark
No, I've never worked with Yew lumber but it sound interesting. Your coffee tables sound great! Making wall art is the same idea and I'm sure you would like doing it - a lot of my wall art pieces could work as small coffee tables or end tables if I put legs on them - and it would also be good to fill the holes with epoxy if I used them as tables. Thanks Paul :) Yes, this was one of those projects that I was really excited about because once I saw how amazing the wood was I could hardly wait to make something out of it!
We had a big fire here last year so most of the brush in my area has already been burned up so hopefully we won't have another fire here for a long time. There were some fires about 30 miles or so from my house this year but I think most of those have already been put out at this point.....but it's hard to keep track to know exactly what the fires are doing or are going to do. Sorry to hear about your friend's losses. It's a really devastating and tragic thing to go through. I hope he can fully recover from his losses and get a new home, shop and business soon.

PS - Wish you would use that straight edge as a push stick to kick out the cut offs on your table saw, instead of your fingers! (Now I sound like my mom, Haha) :-)
Thanks! I really wish I was better at identifying wood but I've never been very good at it so I don't know what kind of wood it is. One day I hope to get a tree expert to look at my art pieces and tell me what they think. I appreciate the push stick tip and believe it or not, I actually use them quite a bit. I really do try to be extra safe when using any power tool and you're right.....I should use a push stick when pushing pieces off the table saw table :)

It's not cedar because it doesn't have the cedar smell. I don't think it's redwood because it's much harder than most of the redwood I've worked with. I don't know what kind of wood it is - I don't think it's a very common wood since I've never had any like it before.

Leave it to some to take something beautiful and natural and transform it into a piece of manufactured plastic. It would make more sense to take one single slice out of a trunk of tree designed by God rather than piece together altered segments.
