This video makes me want to write a musical. Also, nice tidbit about fight scenes. I think the logic really follows there.

I always hate musicals cause the characters usually singer for the sake of singing and no reasons at all. But disney, like you said, uses songs to elevate the story and that's why I love disney, it's my childhood !

Yeah, if a song in a movie doesn't elevate the story it might as well just be a music video.

I completely disagree. I take it as you have not listened or seen true musical theater with meaning, or you didn’t absorb it.

Absolutely amazing video, this is so helpful and thought-provoking. So happy I stumbled across it, instantly subbed.
Favourite song is too hard to choose, but right now I'm feeling Once Upon a Dream the most because I watched Sleeping Beauty today, lmao!

I don't think this video should have been about how Disney uses songs to tell a story. It should be about how Disney used the popular broadway musical formula to tell a story through song.
Disney didn't invent the musical, and this video offers no mention of the shoulders of giants on which these films stand. I really feel like both this video and the narrator fail to have a basis of knowledge in musical theatre and the history of it.
Song purpose in musicals is and always has been to advance the plot. Every great musical has carefully curated musical numbers that are specifically chosen and weaved together in such a way that they advance the plot and tell the story. Even in musicals like Singin' In The Rain, which is essentially a hodgepodge of different songs written before the story, each number serves a purpose. "Moses Supposes" and "Make Em Laugh" seem like pure spectacle, but they tell us what kind of characters Don and Cosmo are, what kind of relationship they have with one another, and how they look at the world.
So you could say that in my example, the two songs don't exactly "Drive the plot", favoring instead to "Reveal the character" and "express the theme". What I think you failed to grasp in your essay is that the latter two are simply sub sections of the former idea.
You mentioned that the song "Reflection" doesn't move the plot along, but I disagree. Like you mentioned, the song shows Mulan's need. Need and desire are vital in caring about the characters, and therefore the plot as a whole. Same goes for every "I Want" song in the Disney pantheon.
You also failed to correctly identify the theme and purpose in Hakuna Matata. The song isn't about Simba learning to take it easy. It's about his relationship forming with Timon and Pumbaa, and how that shapes his character to have the weaknesses he later has in the film (inability and fear to return to pride rock).
Overall, I have a feeling this video just isn't based in a wealth of knowledge of musical theatre and the inner workings of it. It's a pretty surface level understanding, and it isn't really telling anybody anything new.
I do, however, think it has potential. And I think your channel has potential as well. In the future I'd recommend delving deeper into the topics you're speaking about, and fully grasping them before really analyzing them.

Great video. Seeing Toy-Story I couldn't help myself thinking hey that's Pixar tho. I know they're probably interchangeable to most audiences, but...

I felt it okay to use them interchangeably in regards to the writing process since Pixar is owned by DIsney and they often use the same writers across projects (ie. Michael Arndt).

What do musicals, action movies and pornos have in common? The best of them use their iconic scenes to move the plot along.

New Disney has stopped doing this in favor of stripmining old material and pledging not to upset the Chinese goverment
