It is interesting because back in 1985 we backpackers called the whole area Banglamphu, including Khao San Road.

    • @BangkokPat
      @BangkokPat  2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

Back in the day you were smarter so you knew that Khao San Rd was in the Bang Lampu area, not that many know that now unless they've looked a bit deeper. l called this video as it is to distinguish it from the Khao San side of the Bang Lampu canal.

@@BangkokPat I dug out my rather tatty 1982 copy of SE Asia on a Shoestring and Banglamphu is indeed what Tony Wheeler called the area. It was the bible for backpackers back then.

Thanks for the great filming , things have not changed that much which is what i liked about this part of the Banglamphu , so much prefer the old town than the shinny skyscaper modern area bits. Back in late 80's to 90;s, we always used to stay in the New World hotel which is now a very pricy Nouvo City hotel. The rooms were very large and spacious that overlooked the canal. What a great place that was. The little shack next to the bridge was great for some food & drink, believe it is still there but a lot more spruced up now. Around the corner from there in the next soi there was a award winning Thai steet food place with seating in the street , the chef with a wok & open fire, now looks like its gone and a large hotel there. I also used to wander down to the river side fort sometimes . Thanks for bringing back some very happy memories of times gone by.

I had a wonderful time in this area in the first years of the new millennium, I had a long-term room at the Suksawat Hotel (now the SS Hotel) (what a strange name for german speakers) opposite the Bangkok Bank. contact with the population was friendly. everything was half the price of the khaosan

what a great and informative video!
I wish your videos were online back in 2003. Although I did also a lot of walking around in Banglamphu, even had the chance to visit the corrections museum next to the Rommaninat Park.
Last time I walked through Khaosan road was 7 or 8 years ago and yes it was mayhem.
I’ll guess we r now to ‘old’ for that specific road.

My first night there I'd already had a few beers and must have got there early as I think I was 1 of about 3 people there. An American or Canadian guy got on stage and knocked out a perfect rendition of Rory Gallagher's acoustic version of As The Crow Flies (off the Irish Tour album). It's a great song and the guy nailed it. I've seen a few different guys and bands playing over the years and all have been very talented musicians.

Another great vblog, it's not an area of the city I know very well. Interesting to see this although having said that I did spend a lot of time staying there back in 1995/6/96 and spent a chaotic New Years Eve and day there back in 2019/20

Good area to base oneself, and nice places to eat, drink & walk.

Cool video.. interesting to look at, concise and informative. Thanks. I've never been to this area before but may consider it on a future trip as I like it chilled these days. Great channel btw.

Great video BP - thank you for these area reviews - really helping my quest to determine what area to get a condo in -- keep ‘em coming ! Can’t wait to see the BP top 3 areas ranking sometime …. 😊

Thanks! I didn't see any big condos around there, as there are rules about building within the old city area

It's a nice vibe. Pretty sure there's a good little jazz club somewhere in that are as well.

Pat! 9:31 was shown Lida Cafe, but was highlighted as Lila, another eagle eye spotting... 😀

I actually said it was Lida Cafe in a dialogue part I cut out later. Misplelling!

That area of Bangkok is very different from the Asok and Sukhumvit area. I'm used to the goings on there. That looks very quaint and old to me. But I'm sure the little hostels and hotels are cool. They look like one I stayed at on Soi 18.
