- The not-quite-classic Jaguar XJ8 (X308 series) Sport receives a much-needed sprucing up in today's video here on the Old Classic Car channel. Having sat outside for 2-3 years or so, the old Jaguar saloon was looking quite dowdy, yet beneath all the grime, mould and accumulations of rotting leaves, I was sure there was a presentable car hiding away.
In this video I fire up the toothbrush, bucket and soapy water, and set to on the 22yr-old Jaguar's swooping bodywork. I also have a poke around inside to see what interesting oddments I might find ...
Let me know in the comments if you've ever owned one of the Jaguar X308 series cars, whether a Jaguar XJ8 Sport like this one, or perhaps the plush Sovereign models, or top-of-the-range Daimler X308 equivalents.
Maybe you've owned earlier Jaguars, such as the XJ Series 1-3, or the XJ-S for example?
Comments, likes and subs welcomed as always, let me know your thoughts on this era of Jaguar saloon please.

Excellent purchase Rick, I've always found Jaguar body styling to be most appealing.
Yes, never throw away an old toothbrush, you didn't just buy a nice car....you got some free fertilizer too. Looks like the previous owner wasn't really a music fan as all the cds seemed to be freebies! Cheers for upload as always.
Ha well it was certainly a varied bunch of CDs, not sure I'll be playing them any time soon ...
@@aslandama agree about toothbrush
A great variety of uses many a job 👍 done
Really enjoying watching this series, it is so important that modern classics are preserved
Thanks, yes someone has to look after these middle-aged cars before they all vanish!
@@oldclassiccarUK definitely
Should just have took it up to Glasgow and parked it for a week as its rained here every day since Easter and often heavier than a pressure washer 😔😔
And I thought we'd had it rainy around here :)
Well that looks a million dollars now Rick. It is very satisfying doing proper 'detailing' work like that - time consuming, but look at the result ! I think you really have bought a winner there - what a car for the money ! It will be fun following this new car at OCC HQ. Take care 🙂
You got to that old girl just in time.
They need love at that age.
Amazing what detailing does 😊
Looks great now😊
Probably wiser to hoover out leaves and debris before applying any water IMO, nice motor, very good value.
Maybe but it was all pretty damp and gunky so I'm not sure our vac would have done much! Thanks for watching.
a great cleaning job, hope you clean out all the drain holes. Looks like that new replacement shed needs to be built sooner rather than latter, you may have to make it bigger. Love the old J gate.
Need to Check the Drain holes in the Bottom of the Doors are Clear, too.......
I knew it was going to clean up well as soon as I first saw it. It looks none the worse for spending a couple of years outdoors. I think you bought very well here, I'm not seeing rust anywhere so I reckon you got yourself a beauty!
I think she looks wonderful, her design is ageless. Considering how ans where she was parked for the last couple of years, the gunge build up could have been much worse. Love the colour!
Me again. I would like that Elvis & Friends cd. I like Elvis and went to the cinema in the 1960s to see his movies. I have many of his recordings. My favorite song bu him is If I can Dream from 1968.
I like some of his songs too although I'm not a fan as such
Those giveaway newspaper CDs came in a sleeve rather than a box.
Seems the previous owner didn’t spend much on CDs. Most are freebies.
An awful lot of quality car in excellent condition, considering its age, for an asking price of £2,500. Nice to see someone cleaning all the bodywork drainage channels and door shuts, instead of just pointing a high-pressure washer at the car (old-fart/luddite speaking here!). Unless you keep the car under cover I'm afraid the green mould will reappear on the window weather strips - I speak from experience - but it's easily removed again. I too have found careful use of a worn/soft toothbrush very useful in removing accumulated grime. I'd advise checking the door drainage holes which might be blocked. Super buy! I'm envious!
It’s a ‘Bobby Dazzler’ now its ’Ship Shape and Bristol Fashion’. 👍😄
A great jag instalment. Thank you.
This car is absolutely beautiful. Would love one of these as a very useable classic
Thanks yes I'm hoping that's what it'll be
Hi Richard. The Jags number plate last three letters are RHM. Royal His Majesty. Ha!. It does need a little TLC . You will get it into good shape in time. Your youthful assistant will want to assist you in that no doubt. It's a good buy. From Carl.
The RHM plate was fitted by the previous long-term owner, those were his initials
Congratulations on a stunning vehicle. I have owned a 1999 4.0 Sport here in Australia for many years, currently nudging 360,000. Such fabulous cars and well able to stand up to age and mileage with proper maintenance. Cheers.
Thanks for watching these video(s), more on the XJ soon ...
What a nice looking machine.
Lovely car. Lovely house as well!
Thanks Paul, yes it scrubbed ok really
Some interesting things to find in a new purchase, he seemed to like the free CD's issued from the newspapers and a wide selection of disc's. The clean up looks great. nice one Rick. All the best Bob
You did better than me. My Jag only had a Max Bygraves cassette tape!
Hi , that blue xj8 executive .That you saw for sale at that car show. Well thanks to you. I bought it yesterday. Its a lovely car. And your sport is looking very nice. Thanks again for finding me my xj8 . Keep the videos coming.👍
Ha great news!!! (I should be on a commission!!!!) :-)
That has come up great looks like a nice jag can't wait to see it all polished up and when you take it for a run, cheers
Job well done, quite a transformation. That is my favourite Jag colour. Ihave th leather in my S Class fed every 6 months and it pays dividends.
Yes I'll be digging out the leather food before long I think, thanks for watching
Nice to see your youthful assistant so excited about the Jag. Another nice video, thanks.
Thanks, yes anything with a V8 gets a nod from him
Good tidy-up for this nice Jaguar. In 2002 Ford was the owner of Jaguar and suspected the V8 3.2 was actually the same engine Ford inserted in the retro Thunderbird as a 3.9 litre engine. Ford did have ownership of Jaguar from 2000 to 2008. You did a nice job on clearing that crud from the car, all it needs now is a good wax job and maybe a newer tire if there the same one that originated on that car. Let us know about your next video. Cheers
Beautiful Jag. Cheers.
Tip.
Give your car a wash with a soft brush and white vinegar, flush with tap water and wipe dry!
JIM ❤😊
Haven't heard that approach before!
Hi Richard . I'm surprised you don't have a power washer with a foam feature ..And use a decorators 1" brush with 2" depth too reach the hard to reach places. The toothbrush is great but the plastic body will scratch the paintwork . You've certainly bought a good car , no doubt . Thanks
I don't often have need for a pressure washer, on the oldies it'd either damage fragile old paint or blast water into places I don't want it getting into. Occasionally it'd be useful for giving a muddy car a good clean underneath.
hi Rick. great video, advise checking the air-cleaner and engine oil to see when they were last done, its an expensive power unit should failure occur. Harley could do this ! good luck, great car.
Yes all very true, the oil looks fresh and if the recent receipts are accurate, it was getting oil services every 12 months despite just doing a couple of hundred miles or so per year.
Great car, not so sure about the CD selection though.😂👍
Yes I might alter the disc selection ...
What a difference a few hours can make to a car that has been sat close to a hedge. I would feed the leather if I were you, I think the cracks will be minimal once fed Maybe you'll need to do it more than once. One question just for curiosity are you keeping the personalised plate on the car? It has no meaning to you sentimentally but It does hide the true age of the car and will keep people guessing. Interesting finds in the car even the CD's made me chuckle! Thanks Rick for the video I think she has found a good home with you and will be well looked after. Oh and it has Harley's blessing. 👍👍
I think I will keep the plate, having a low number (25) I think it's probably a bit more distinctive than its original reg. Plus it's a nod to its long-term previous owner who another commenter said viewed it as his pride and joy apparently. RHM were his initials.
Three of my four cars have a 6 CD multi changer! Proper motoring, non of this digital, way too much technology rubbish.
Those window waist rail strips are a curious thing. A. They are collosaly expensive, but B. They are a rubber mould enclosing aluminium, which sits clipped onto the steel door. Consequently, the aluminium gradually disappears! Finding good secondhand is very difficult too. I'm really surprised that such a classy car used such shoddy material. That's also the case with the cheap microswitch in door locks that are a regular problem too. I hope you don't get a resident electrical gremlin as fault finding requires the genius of Einstein. You'll not belive how many fuses and relays you find.
If the window bottom strips look a bit swolen, they're probably corroded inside.
I think you really lucked out on this car - even the celtic alloys look good. The exective version is in fact the base model and the sport is the next one up the scale. I always preferred the look of the seats in the sport.
Don't forget to clean your toothbrush before cleaning your teeth 😊
Oops forgot
Rick, please! using a sponge on paint work is not TLC, it's more like GBH! You should use a microfibre mitt, which will not scratch the paint like a sponge does
I know what you mean but even a mitt can pick up dirt along the way, and it's not a concours car, thanks for watching
Rubbish, have used sponges for cleaning cars for nearly 40 years.have tried these fancy modern things like mitts and those stupid blade things for drying and much prefer sponges and either wash leathers or micro fibre drying towels.i would however prefer to use detailing brushes instead of toothbrushes on paintwork.cars looking good, you just cant beat a jaguar xj.
Mate, I’ve been watching this video for fifteen mins now and you still haven’t started washing it yet, FFS!!!! And, if you keep washing it with a toothbrush you’ll be there for a month not to mention scratching the shit out of it. 😂🤣🤣
All the door shuts and recesses were packed with gloopy old leaves and claggy stuff, so I had to start on them first. No point washing the rest of it, then flicking out clumps of mouldy detritus from the boot shut area etc over the bits I'd just washed :) Fast forward is your friend in these instances perhaps!
Looking at the silhouette of the jaguar I can see the influence of the Ford Motor Company coming through I'd suggest that the Australian Ford Fairlane would be as closest bedfellow nice enough but way too big you'll need to set up a mortgage directly linked to the fuel tank still it's just something to wash and polish and show off some people have Harley-Davidson's others have Ford Fairlane oh sorry Jaguar
The shape has nothing to do with Ford, it is basically the previous X300, which itself was a re-working of the XJ40 lifting styling cues from the original Series 1-3 XJs of 1968 onwards. Nothing to do with Ford, other than at the time Ford owned Jaguar.
@@oldclassiccarUKcorrect,zero input from ford, the only thing ford did was supply loads of money and massively improve the build quality of jaguar.they did great things for jaguar and pretty much left jaguar to do what they do best in regards to styling and building them.its all gone wrong for jaguar since ford unfortunatley sold them.ford and jaguar have allways bin my 2 favorite brands.jaguar will be no more soon unfortunatley if they continue on with this high price all electric nonsense.
Guys,….it’s 2024, get a foam gum and proper liquid car cleaning kit. I mean ………..a weak sounding garden hose and …….. a tooth brush, really?
It worked fine! it's only washing a car, not Salon Prive :) Thanks for watching
Never use a sponge on a car. M
It's no concours car and lives outside so I don't think it'll do much harm, plus anything can pick up grit in it, not just sponges. Thanks for watching!
@@oldclassiccarUK Use a car-washing mitt and rinse it before putting the mitt back into the soapy water. Use two buckets. M
Would a pressure washer have been better ?
My observations from the CD collection He read the Express his wife read the Mail and they voted conservative, Cricket was obviously a religion in his house as well as decent music, but rather than waste life on all trivia they traveled to Germany to see historic sights.
I'm not too keen on pressure washing, it can force water into places it doesn't need to be, the crud wasn't baked on either which was a bonus.
