      Not just the children. One of my biggest takeaways from Covid was how quickly people became desensitized to the 1000+ deaths daily unless it was someone they had an emotional stake in.

    I really love the part where he tries to tie her shoes but can't. It's doing several things at once:
    1. Showing that he's in shock (it's the first thing he can think to do)
    2. Letting us see even more how much he cares (trying to fix his mom's undone laces for her even after she's dead)
    3. Emphasizing to the audience that he's just a kid and isn't at all prepared to be alone (he can't even tie shoelaces, let alone live on his own)

    • @anna-dq8fm
      @anna-dq8fm 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +50

      I also like to think of it as a metaphor that he is trying to be better. His mum (and her shoes) represented joy and care for others; trying to tie them and failing I think symbolises that he is also trying to better himself, yet without his mother guiding him, Jojo finds out he is not as ready as he maybe thought he was. Then at the end of the movie, he can tie Elsa's shoes-hes become the person he and his mother wanted to be

    • @marinesinspace6253
      @marinesinspace6253 28 วันที่ผ่านมา +3

      I kind of thought of the shoe tying as a struggle of Jojo. He's capable of doing it here, but it would be admitting that his mom is gone, and that his childhood is over, and he's not quite ready for that yet.

    I saw in one of the behind-the-scenes that Waititi was really gentle with the child actor. They worked hard to give him motivation for his tears without showing him something specifically horrific, and they had a live actor in the harness so he could see the person was *acting* and was okay. Obviously kids aren't stupid, but your brain doesn't always have control of your fear.

    • @N3RDYG0GGLES

    • @DoremiFasolatido1979
      @DoremiFasolatido1979 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It NEVER has control of fear. That's not how the brain works. Your neocortex controls exactly nothing. The structures of your hindbrain completely rule you, no matter what. Nothing short of radical brain surgery can change that. No drug, no training, nothing. All the rest of your brain does, is smooth out the responses from your hindbrain, and fill in gaps where needed...and maybe add some window dressing. You can't consciously make choices...ever. Those decisions are done before you're even consciously aware they exist to be made at all. There's a measurable several fractions of a second between when your hindbrain decides something, and your neocortex becomes aware of it. And it's the immutable structure of the brain at work. It can't be sped up, bypassed, or reversed. Period.
      More importantly, most human problems with fear and pain aren't a question of control, but perspective. Everyone sees them as enemies to be conquered, or useless quirks to be disregarded. And that sets everyone up for failure at the worst possible moment. It's why "courage" ALWAYS fails. Doing the opposite of what your fear compels you to do...is exactly the same as doing what it's compelling you to do. The opposite of burning to death is freezing to death...not "not dying at all."
      The only way to deal with fear and pain is to understand that they aren't adversaries...they're YOU. The most fundamental aspect of you. If anything, they should be viewed the way one would view overbearing friends or family who worry about us excessively. There's a right way and wrong way to deal with them. Fighting with them or ignoring them...is the wrong way. Listening to them, reassuring them, and moving forward with care and thoughtfulness, is the right way.

      @@user-lb9xw4xf2q yes, but i just mean that the director took the time to actually establish that in a previous scene. even their placement in the frame. So you have the previously established image of him looking directly at her feet, while talking. So you have that reference point of her being elevated above him to the left. Like for me personally, I don't really pay too much attention to things like clothing details, even if they are made to be really distinctive, but placement in a scene like when she's dancing and he's just looking at her feet, that sticks in my mind more readily than "She had red wing tips with a white trim" or whatever. So when the hanging scene replicates that exact same perspective, THAT was what resonated more for me personally, for visual recognition of that being his mom. Which I thought was a nice touch

      I think it was the perfect way to do this film, really, the director did an amazing job at balancing making fun of and mocking the genocidal dictatorship of Nazi Germany, but also reminding you that it WAS still a genocide. The mixture of laughter and grief really does something-
      It should be noted, though, that while this film is based off of a book, it’s recommended not to read it and instead go off of the movie instead. Both the book and the movie are similar up until the mom’s death, at which point the book turns into a … really creepy piece of media. There’s a reason the director made up a whole new ending for it. Nobody has any fucking clue what the fuck the writer was on for the original ending.
      (It was rape fetish shit, it, it was just a lot of rape fetish shit?)

    Some Holocaust films just make you reflect, but still a lot of people are moving to this kind of society without even noticing that they could be them one day. Wether it's the nazis or the victims. Both were humans, just like we are.

      But it isn't dumb actually, it tells us he takes the security of his mother for granted. Jojo is so young and impressionable, he can't even tie shoelaces yet. He takes for granted his mother will be there. We are shown her and her shoes over and over, he sees them every day. And yet, when we/Jojo find her hanging, despite all the warning signs and countless foreshadowing, we are as vulnerable and helpless as is he. He still can't tie the shoelaces, and his mother, who would always help, is now gone.
      It's not done too much, it's done to convey this feeling of, even though we are told over and over a bad thing is coming, we are never truly ready for it. And in a way, it's saying to the audience, Jojo has more of an excuse than we do as adults, for taking it for granted and not seeing the signs, he is a little boy, we are not, the fact we are shocked too tells us anyone can be suckered in by propaganda and brainwashing.
      It's super effective and clever.

      @@mrsfahrenheit spoilers are valid for, if I'm being generous, up to 6 months after release? The movie has been out for 5 years; for the people who have bothered to see it already, they should have every right to discuss the movie and their feelings/thoughts about it freely with others to whom the movie means something. For the people who haven't seen it yet, the amount that will see it is fairly low now, and the amount of those people who will care about "spoilers" is even lower.
      So no, I'm not going to "avoid spoiling" a movie for a miniscule, theoretical amount of people because some whiny children online can't grasp the concept of "other people exist outside of you and your bubble". The rest of us, will discuss a brilliant movie and shocking scene, like adults.
