Great info! Was having the same issue. Performed your test, and found the relay was bad. Did your fix and that repaired the relay, still no fan. Started searching for fuses. After some investigation found the sucker, mounted to the frame above the reservoir bottle on the brake side. Blown fuse found. Fan now working, woo hoo! Again, great video. Keep ‘em coming. Gen 1 out

A great help! Thanks for taking the time to make this video. Also, thanks for the tip on the Diode mode for the multimeter. Very handy. I'd forgotten about that mode.

Me too. I found it in the woods behind the motorcycle shop I used to work at 10+ years ago. The boss let me take it home. I put a male plug on the end of the cord and plugged it in. It still worked!! I recently built a new backing plate and frame for it to ditch the 60 lbs of commercial grade extruded frame and 20 lbs of fluorescent light ballasts. I’ll eventually put led strips in it, but I just wanted to get it hung in the new house so it wouldn’t get damaged on the floor.

This is really a good lesson, Dustin. Just the problem I'm having, no fan. Will try to find the relay, if there is one, or otherwise try to get the radiator-fan unit off. No cable shoes unfortunately.

You're a goddamn hero man. I just bought a super used 2002 KLR and 10 minutes into my first ride it got so hot I had to pull over and let it cool.
Fan wasn't kicking on. After trouble shooting the temp sensor and fan motor I found your video and picked up a new relay based on the part number you gave for $14 at the local auto parts chain.
Fan runs like a charm now and I cleaned a bunch of crap out from under the fuel tank while I was at it. Cheers man, and thanks for making this video.

Great man. Glad you got the fan working again. Summertime is here. You’re going to need to keep it cool.

Wow right on. I was not expecting you to fix the relay. I was about to order one up on Amazon but should try that first.

    Thank you for this video.
I recently tried to remove the temperature senor wire on my 2015 Gen2, but was concerned about cracking something because it wasn't coming off with a moderately aggressive tug.
    Any advice? Thanks in advance.

I think a little dielectric grease between the contacts wouldn’t be a bad idea to stop future corrosion.

I had a question on my 2006 KLR 650. I switched out the 10 amp glass fuse with a 15 amp blade spade fuse system. Is this the reason why my fan is not coming on? Thanks Chris LaRiccia

If it was working prior to switching the fuse holder, I’d suspect that the fuse or holder that you installed isn’t making a good connection.

    Dustin,
I have tried finding the relay by the part number on Amazon as you suggested, and I find everything but the relay i need... Any suggestions? I soooo want to ride my bike and this is snubbing me!

You can possibly find it at an auto parts store. I’m not sure where you’re located, but I think that the relay fits many Toyotas
