    This is ridiculous. I really shows that you put a lot care into your work, I haven't seen anything like it, it's very inspiring not only in terms of accent training but also in terms of my own line of work. Hugely appreciate the detail you go into.

    Now I juz realized that slurring words is sometimes helpful and makes the statements said easier and flowing. I'm used to speaking awfully slow and choppy in english just to pronounce the words right like how a robot reads the word in a sentence rather than the sentence. I'm being too critical with myself.

    Well, as an English student, I must say that I had to watch the video several times to understand Erika Hill's speaking o_o On the other hand, I think I'm used to hear Rachel speaking because everything she said I understood it perfectly ... Perhaps if I can master my listening with this kind of videos, I'll improve my English...

    • @rachelsenglish
      @rachelsenglish  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      E Vii Carpio Ms. Hill was talking quite fast! Even if it takes you several tries to understand, that's still pretty good! :)

      By the way, I've been trying to find where the video's transcript is by going to the website, but up until now I haven't found it. I do want it because I came up with an idea of doing a Ben Franklin's exercise of this particular video (one of the things I've learned here thanks to you and I really like to do)...
      So I was wondering if it's possible to you :')

  • @borkasiamese4617

    Hi Rachel! May I ask you to include the full (not interrupted) interview in the file as well? It, for instance, could follow the part with your explanation. You know, your explanations are great, but sometimes you just want to have a choice to watch the full interview uninterrupted :) It could also solidify our understanding of the inteview. What do you think?
    Anyway, thank you a lot for you work!
    -Borka

    In reality, Erica Hill is the opposite of what is expected of a broadcaster. I watch her newscasts and she has a tendency to speak really fast. She is supposed to speak slowly and succinctly.

    • @walterwhite5578
      @walterwhite5578 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I agree I am a native English born and bred in the UK and although I can understand all types of accent (except for Irish, Scottish) and fast speech. News broadcaster, however, are meant to slow down when speaking.

  • @denijeur

    Hi Rachel, are you sure the phonetic transcription of the word 'words' is [wɛɹdz] (see 7:00)? I think I hear [wəɹdz].
    I love your lessons, thanks a lot for them

    • @rachelsenglish
      @rachelsenglish  10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Those two sound combinations are pretty much the same, the difference is stress. The schwa [ə] cannot be stressed, and 'words' is a content word so it will be stressed.

    • @denijeur
      @denijeur 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Rachel's English Thanks for your answer. However, it's still not quite clear to me. Could you please take a look at these words which I thought were minimal pairs for stressed ɛɹ and stressed əɹ:
      bear /bɛr/ oaadonline.oxfordlearnersdictionaries.com/dictionary/bear
      burr /bər/ oaadonline.oxfordlearnersdictionaries.com/dictionary/burr
      pair /pɛr/ oaadonline.oxfordlearnersdictionaries.com/dictionary/pair
      purr /pər/ oaadonline.oxfordlearnersdictionaries.com/dictionary/purr
      When I press the speaker icon next to the words 'pear' and 'purr', they sound differently and the "or" in "words" sounds like ər to me, not ɛr
      Nevertheless, I am not a native speaker so I can be very wrong. Sorry again for bothering.

    Hi Rachel I really enjoyed and benefited from your videos. By watching this video, I realize I cannot pronounce WAR perfectly. I have problems with ending R and L sound ....like loyal, rural. I have seen the one of " squirrel " which is really helpful and before that I can't say that word clearly and correctly. Do you have any videos regarding the ending R and L sound? Really needs help!!!Thanks~
