    On May 21st we headed into Wyoming with the goal of capturing coal trains along the BNSF Orin Subdivision. This is the mainline into and out of the Powder River Basin, famous for producing the most coal anywhere in the United States. This 3 & 4 track line handles up to 55 BNSF & UP Coal trains which all have to battle numerous uphill grades while negotiating the rolling hills of the Wyoming grasslands. Sit back & relax and watch as EMD & GE's finest modern diesel power is pushed to the absolute max lugging 15,000-ton coal trains up-grade through breathtaking scenery.
    Subdivision(s):
    BNSF Canyon Subdivision
    BNSF Orin Subdivision
    BNSF Black Hills Subdivision
    Location(s) In Order of Appearance:
    Cheyenne, WY
    Glendo, WY

    Trains from my home state! Anytime I go up to the black hills to go turkey hunting in spring, the highway passes right by some of the railroad tracks, one time I even saw one of the biggest coal trains I ever saw, 4 engines, at least 100 coal cars, it was big just lemme tell ya that

    Living in Grand Island, Nebraska, i saw more coal trains on Burlington Northen than freighters come through there. I was living there when they did the buildup to raise the trains on Burlington Northern so they could go over the Union Pacific tracks so they didn't have to stop and wait on their trains to go through town.

    I worked in a railcar repair shop in Grand Island, Nebraska that had Burlington Northern tracks come by on the North side of our plant and Union Pacific on the South side and we received railcars from both. We did routine maintenance and repair on a lot of coal cars that ran on Burlington Northern. We even worked on some coal cars that were called 'million milers' because, as that implies, they had over a million miles on them. I believe i even saw some of the types of coal cars that we worked on. We also worked on some boxcars, lumber cars and comparment cars. Ok

      Indeed! It’s a cool contrast seeing the struggling loaded trains with the higher speed empties

    WOW was that a production. Too bad I missed the premiere, duty calls. To anyone who says coal is dead, they must just be talking about eastern/Appalachian coal…

      Thanks, Harrison! Yeah, the levels of coal haulage out west are unmatched. Absolutely dwarfs anything in the east
