Keep going up bro. We love you, my wife and I watch your videos and let me tell you something: We are from Djibouti in East Africa. Yeah, it's waaaaaaaay far from Canada :P Love and happy New year Matti.
I like your stuff too!the only thing that I notice that is in a great deal of youtube clips are jump cuts. One or two I can live with but some people put them every 3-5 seconds and they drive me mad very distracting. Anyway keep up the great content
There is so much setup for a lot of b-roll footage that people never see. Doing a lot of prep work for small snippets of footage. Worth it though. Totally worth it
Too true, for every 1 second of final video I must have 30 seconds of b-roll video and setup time, and yet it's still not enough sometimes. 99% of youtube viewers will never see the work that goes into each video creators make. Such a shame we get hate comments after putting in such hard work.
I love and appreciate that you talk more about the creative process in these types of videos, because I can learn the technical side from a lot of different places but in terms of learning the thought process, it doesn't come as easily. This one was simple but very helpful.
So, I'm getting ready to start my own channel, and through out the planning process, learning how to shoot b-roll, and actually going out to shoot b-roll has been the most fun I've had with my camera in a long time. Even if you don't shoot videos, or vlog, shooting b-roll can be a blast. Great video Matti!
Hi Matt, I am new to filming on my iPhone, I have always loved filming family stuff and capturing the moment. It is only now that I am looking at it through a filmmakers eyes and your page is the best one I have found up to now. Well done. Darren in the UK
Love the chip bag shot! Really shows a unique viewpoint. I would suggest taking that same mentality of shooting through items in your filmmaking. It can make everyday shots look dynamic.
Sooooo excited to find you and Peter recently. I haven't been this motivated to up my own TH-cam game EVER. Huge thank you from your newest subscriber!
Congrats Matti, Thank you so much for always teaching me something new. Between you & Peter I learned so many cool stuff. You guy’s are the Dynamic dual.
Hi Matti, love your work, this is a great video! When I film B-roll I usually start from one setting shot, like a medium shot of the subject, then I do all the different details. When an object is involved I try to think about what sounds remind me the most of that object, for example if I'm filming the preparation of a cyclist I'll film the shift whit a gear change, the tire on the road, and the the brakes. With this technique I can bring the attention of the viewer to the subject of the interview firstly with the words of the interview itself, then with sound and lastly with the image :)
Thanks...I enjoyed that video on 'B-Roll'. I needed the little 'pick-me-up' today. Was up until 3am last night trying to put some video together. I definitely want to get more creative with my b-roll. Good timing!
My tip is just film all your broll at 100fps or above. You can always speed up, but will have shitty footage if you try and slow it down. There's so much you can do once you have that buttery smooth footage. Edit: film it all on a gimbal as well
The problem is that if you speed it up and use it all in real time your shutter speed will be way off and look messed up. But sometimes it doesn’t matter
Yea I mostly just use it for speed ramping anyways. But now further into your video, good tips on different types of broll for different types of videos. Not everybody is going to want cinematic shots
Thanks for a great video. Had this same conversation with a client this past weekend after they asked what "broll" was. I feel like it's the single most important thing you can add to your films outside of great interviews and being technically sound.
There are some interesting points that I hope to implement in the future. I’m doing a bit of b-roll research and this video was quite helpful. Thank you. ☺️
Just the first few seconds made me hit the like-button. You're funny! Love that. I'll take your gold nuggets to hopefully get better in my video editing, too. You are a huge inspiration to me! Thank you, Matti,
No Matti we are so happy having you in this community sharing all that knowledge! Awesome video totally helpful and that first shot pufff no words! sick!
Matti, I’m happy you made a video on this. Being an amateur I know that Broll is important but getting good Broll has been difficult for to do. Like you say, It’s all trial and error and I need to realize that I’m not going to start out making sweet cinematic Broll like yours. I need to stop dragging my feet and just start somewhere. Anyway, thanks for keeping me inspired.
Between you and PM, I have learned so much about film making. I am a newbie to videography as of a year ago coming from the photography side and I’m obsessed! I own an insurance agency and have adopted filmmaking to make me stand out more. Thank you for your insight, Matti. 🤜💥🤛
Great video again Matti! I couldn't agree more on planning. I spend most of this time on selecting the right track which inspires me to think about the shots and b roll I shoot. Music is like a good spice mix.. it brings the flavour!
Still killing it with these videos man! I love that your channel doesnt just re-hash what other channels say which can get old after a while. Honestly and transparency are great too! Going to be another good year, I think :)
Matti, you are awsome! Really apreciate your cinematography tips, mate. You have some really nice techniques. Thanks for teaching all of us how to make better videos. Hope you have an even more wonderfull year than the previous one.
Yeah B roll is my definitely new focus. Thank you for the inspiration. We are working towards 1000 subs and doing a giveaway when that point comes, less than 30 more to go!
Seriously the best video you have done!! Love it! Whenever I go into a situation where I am shooting a community video I always spend a couple of hours getting the B roll before I even start with the main storyline B roll always comes first because it’s the most important footage to have in your repertoire
your videos are so helpful, i've always made films but your videos are just making me think of every little thing, gonna be a good year for my videos thanks to you!
This blew my mind. I am extremely creative, however...I am in dev for my new podcast but will also use simultaneously TH-cam those podcasts and having clutch b-roll, MAKES the content look sharp...elegant, pure fun or joy. Thanks for this.
Hey Matti! Late to the lesson. However I started photography as an iPhoner, then Droner, got serious, now I have a decent a6300 tele, and kit for now. Been watching you and Peter now for a year on EVERYTHING. You guys are awesome. Love the humor, more importantly I love the unstructured structure to the lessons, you guys totally understand the HDD mind and how to keep attention. Why you guys are at the top. PLEASE keep up the good work. You are taking a guy like me knowing nothing about photography to getting darn good at it. Ok den. Ya Minnesooooootan here. lol Take Care! bye for now.
Matti, love watching the videos you and your brother produce. I'm learning a lot. I wondered, have you ever, or would you ever, considered making a behind-the-scenes video of how you make your travel videos? Like what cameras and techniques you use, how to capture good shots while telling a good story? I would love to see the process and what goes into your decision making when you film. Thanks and keep up the awesome work.
Love the whole thing with B-Roll, and something I’ve found pretty difficult to get when I’ve been out shooting... Mostly because I hadn’t planned it as I was on a trip. As they say, if you fail to plan, you plan to fail. It was also interesting that a tips video I’ve tried to shoot before, but it just didn’t work out, suddenly came to me in B-roll as I was watching. So I can continue to describe what I’m doing and add B-roll to show it in a more interesting and cinematic way. Closer details of setting up with mid shots showing a little more environment. Thanks for churning my creative brain matter Matti. Have an epic week Cheers JT
Some great tips Matti! We actually hit most of these points in our first video which we are happy about, but it's great to have a solid list of things to remember to stick to when out shooting. We will definitely be implementing some of these when we go to shoot our next travel vlog!
I found out that by shooting b-roll early in the shoot or even sometimes the first thing, often helps me create my story better cause I have a lot of connecting shots already recorded up looking buttery smooth
Great info, adding B Roll to my footage has made huge difference that my subs have let me know the really appreciate. Thanks for the great content, I come a way with something useful every time. Jason
your channel has shown me so much quality content already and i just joined like an hour ago. PLEASE KEEP UP THE GOOD VIDEOS ! some youtubers end up slacking but i love this content. keep it up .
allways learning from you Matti. Can you put a video on the method you edit. 1st things to do, the sequence, the music, when you make the transitions and so far, thanks
That 6Dii RIG is genius ! Love that camera hack to get a shot. Depending on where you're shooting I find it easier to shoot the camera content first, put that together and when you have a clear cut go out and shoot the very appropriate Broll for that video. You don't always have the opportunity to do that (travelling, location etc) but I also get a lot of cool ideas as i'm assembling my on camera stuff. Then you can go out and shoot very specific stuff especially if don't have the time while shooting. Good tips Matti! Happy 2018
Hit the nail right on the head! i really did sleep on B roll. Then I'm cryin ' when it's time to edit!! Great content as always!! I almost went out and bought a 6Dmkii today. Picked an 80d to use with my 16-35.
One more thing, matti! You are kinda simple teacher, whose method is of teaching is like painting on the wall. Your technique of making someone understand, is👌❤❤❤
My B-Rollin my vlogs sucks. So to get those better B-Roll shots it’s 120 FPS? I just Film on standard settings as I am new to filming and TH-cam and only started 8 weeks ago to vlog

Take a shot of vodka every time Matti says B-roll
New party game 😂
Love the chip bag shot! Really shows a unique viewpoint. I would suggest taking that same mentality of shooting through items in your filmmaking. It can make everyday shots look dynamic.

Thanks for the tips! Hoping to use some later this week snowboarding

This was one of the best B-Roll explanations and tips I have seen. Thanks.
Love it Matti. Thanks for all the advice
Great simple tips. Some so obvious but it's great when it is effectively translated.
Awesome video. I love seeing how you rig stuff up.
You and Peter are the best tutors even I've learned a lot from you guys

That’s for sure 🙌🏻
Your video technique is very cool as well ;)
I'm just starting up my channel and it's going to be centered around b-roll. This is great man. Thanks!
That chip bag shot was great. Very creative.

Glad your learning man!
Never stops mate, never stops and I love it. Even though you guys make me look long in the tooth ;) Old(ish) dog, new, new tricks :D
Some great tips Matti! We actually hit most of these points in our first video which we are happy about, but it's great to have a solid list of things to remember to stick to when out shooting. We will definitely be implementing some of these when we go to shoot our next travel vlog!

I found out that by shooting b-roll early in the shoot or even sometimes the first thing, often helps me create my story better cause I have a lot of connecting shots already recorded up looking buttery smooth
b-roll, music, prep, story, a-roll, talent. the list never gets shorter.
Best 9 min of b roll advice I’ve seen thanks Matti
Praying for you to reach a million soon ! Keep it up brother!
Couldn’t agree more with leaving time for B Roll! I booked a half day with a client today to shoot B roll shots for their interview we filmed!
OMG that chip bag rig is awesome!
Another useful video. Really made me think about filming more than just one object/area.
Really good material here Matti. Thanks BTW Good luck with your NEW Studio.
Thanks for the tips Matti, I really enjoyed this one.
You really inspired me with that chips bag. Thanks Matti!
I am constantly struggling on how to incorporate b-roll better into my videos. Thank you for this.
allways learning from you Matti. Can you put a video on the method you edit. 1st things to do, the sequence, the music, when you make the transitions and so far, thanks

Thanks man! And yea it would be the best to have your script/content first but sometimes you just gotta roll with the punches. 🙌🏻
Absolutely! If you edit your own stuff long enough you learn a lot of lessons ;). "I should have grabbed that SHOT while I was there!!!" ;)
Hit the nail right on the head! i really did sleep on B roll. Then I'm cryin ' when it's time to edit!! Great content as always!! I almost went out and bought a 6Dmkii today. Picked an 80d to use with my 16-35.
Man all of this gives me such a different perspective. The "wow" shots you talked about are so dope! Thanks for the how to advice!
Love your videos. Full of practical tips
Thanks man 🙏🏻
stepping up the production! love it! super inspiring matti!
Doesn't have to be 120fps, honestly a lot of regular footage looks great being speed ramped and any movement can be speed ramped (usually). Just get more and you will start getting the right footage.
These were all just 60fps actually
TravelFeels yeah with go pro hero 5 on standard settings and my phone. I have a camera which I bought a few weeks ago canon eos750d but not used it yet apart from taking a few photos as I don’t know settings etc so waiting on someone to show me
Miklos Campuzano thanks mate im still new to it all so don’t really know what’s what yet haha
Mate your an absolute legend. Love your work.
You and Peter! I wish I had some creators of your guys' caliber close to me to work and learn with.
Hi Matti, I really love your videos and also with Peter. Is it possible to make a B-roll using 24fps? I don't have a camera that provides 60 or 120 fps. Thanks.
Thanks so much for this! I get so many ideas from your movies!
When you put that much time, effort and thought into it, kinda want to call it A- instead of B roll! Good job, Matti!
Good one Matti! Great tips- thank you.
I've been interested in better understanding and using B-roll. This video is both timely and educational. Thanks for doing it as well as risking that lovely camera lens in your opening. :)
Saved for future reference. I'm about to start up a passion project with a good friend of mine showcasing various coffee places, and B-roll is gonna be key! Crispy slow-mo latte art pours? Oh yes!
I made an interview style video for a college course over 4 years ago, and honestly the wealth of knowledge I've gained since from you and Pete is insane. I'd love to go back and remake that video just to prove the importance of good b-roll.
Don’t worry about remaking just make some new better stuff 🙌🏻
filming some B-roll myself i’hve found that my absolutely favorite Lens! is the Canon 70-200 F2.8!! that lens is a beast and a beauty at the same time! 😍
what an amazing video opener. you rock matt!
Thank you very much for explaining this. Very detailed and visually entertaining. Thanks bro!
Defining the term b-roll at the beginning of your video is the mark of a good teacher. I watched several other videos wondering what b-roll means. Whenever specialist or technical vocabulary is used it should be defined. As an aviator I could use the term "p-factor." But it would not be respecting my audience if I did not define it.
