    Fascinated by the creation of escape rooms! I have so many storyline ideas for them but no way of knowing how to work with existing escape companies to make them come to life or even where to begin if I wanted to start my own!

      Glad you enjoyed it! We are building pirate stuff right now, then a Nostromo styled spaceship interior/exterior. More to come! Lol BTW: a guy named Carwyn Morris built a beautiful studio scale Red Dwarf ship on TH-cam- you might enjoy it

      @@GratuitousSets Awesome, congratulations on that! I just found your videos, looking for some DIY ideas for a sci-fi themed room. :) Beyond the construction details your channel provided, I'm curious if there's some special sauce for getting a high-sheen finish, to look like injection-molded plastic (kinda like the spaceship walls in Star Wars or Star Trek). I'm sure good lighting is a big part of making it look right on video, but in a real-life situation curious how glossy-painted MDF holds up to the curious eye. :) Any kind of basic "paint that looks like plastic" you all use for this sort of thing? I'd love to see a cool finish like that but still using MDF/etc components. :)
      Thanks!

      We use an airless sprayer to get a super smooth finish. Here is a video about how we build and paint spaceship walls... ---> th-cam.com/video/v70Cn_xD1zY/w-d-xo.html

    • @GratuitousSets
      @GratuitousSets  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Generally, in film, glossy stuff is to be avoided because it can reflect studio lights, the camera, etc. Super smooth eggshell finish is the way to go! Spraying the walls leaves no brush strokes or texture...

    For a lot of finish surface, why not just adhere sheet styrene? Cheap, cuts easily, smooth surface, glues easily, and bending is what it's about. But maybe I'm missing something? I've used it on my own spaceship set without any major issues.

    • @GratuitousSets
      @GratuitousSets  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Are you talking about surfacing the bendable plywood?

    • @RSEFX
      @RSEFX 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@GratuitousSets Yes. But I must say I don't like the way I worded that. Sounds obnoxious. Anyway, I was suggesting the use of sheet styrene as a finishing surface since it can be painted with metallics, is free of grain. and can be spray-adhesived (takes several coats) onto bend board (or even ram board)...I used to use contact cement, but the new types that have come out are very weak. I've sheeted entire walls and used MEK to adhere the edges where they meet, but done that mostly on smaller areas, like medium-sized miniature rooms. Just some thoughts for possible future consideration...which you may already know all about...So I'll just, er, shut up now ;-) And I should add, really nice work on your set!!

    • @GratuitousSets
      @GratuitousSets  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Lol- that sounds good! Since we are using Trupan and MDF, we don't have any grain issues but, when we use bend-board, it's always a bit of a pain. 🙄

      @@RSEFX try number 90 spray adhesive. If you adjust the spray to 'Heavy' it comes out like "Silly String" _(well, silly thread)_ ..in a flat fan, and you don't need full _(paint-like)_ coverage. Light coat both sides, I only wait about 20 seconds, push 'em together, press down everywhere, and let go!
      Light thready coverage minimizes styrene melt, it's not the glue but the evaporant solvent, liquifying the glue, that attacks plastics.
      I'm sci-fying a step van atm and have used about 40, 14.6oz cans .. for everything with larger surfaces.. Vapor barriers, flooring, transparencies, woven fiberglass cloth _(also "hem" the fibglss cloth edges so it doesn't unravel while stored)_ different types of insulation in different situ.s also has high _(cooking oven levels)_ heat resistance.. Even "hemmed" my trousers.. LoL
      It's kind of expensive (⁓ $14USD) but there's no brushes, no clean up, no prep, no spreading, no drips, no leakages, no knock-overs .. And it's attached and done about 60 seconds after rattling the can..

    When building props that are in the walls are you guys building in some kind of crawl space/side hallway for management of that wiring or is it getting wired into wall and then pressed flush? It's one of those things that i've been wondering how everyone is handling it. I've known some people to put everything in the ceiling, others hide microcontrollers in faux conduit boxes etc.

    • @GratuitousSets
      @GratuitousSets  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The ceilings in the space we are working in are 12' high, but the walls on the interior of each game space are only 10' high. That lets us run straight up into a 2' area where the wires can run free and have a fulfilling life.
      The walls that we pre-built span corners, so there is a natural space behind each. The short answer is "whatever works best in each circumstance"
