      I disagree with "drawing out of a bricked hand into a win" that is no fun either.
      The best duels have been the ones where both me and my oponent are careful with our resources and there's a bunch of mind games going on trying to figure out how to win the resource game without being too careless.

      I hope you are ready for a bunch of modern players to come and insult you about how it's "no fun when the game takes more then 3 turns". every time I say almost exactly what you said here I always get delusional modern players jumping on me talking about how "boring it is" or "how much of a slog" that kind of game is. they don't understand that exact attitude is what drives away new players or returning old ones, and then they wonder why no new players are joining the game.
      yugioh was fun when it was chess, but it's nothing more then an actual gun duel now.
      NEW players want a game where they can think of each turn as it happens, read their card and understand what that card does based on the current field. they do not want to learn what 500 cards do by heart to just *know* instinctively what a card they drew is for

      3 turn matches happens because so many new archetypes have like 2 or 3 effects for one card. Honestly, I blame the card designs for modern cards, since it obviously makes old cards obsolete, and normalizing deck building with 3 or 4 cards of an archetype with 3 or hand traps.

    Love the old-school videos. It helped me get back into the current game, at least at a casual level. Allowed me to seek out and find a deck that is somewhat competitive but still casual and not full meta in a Budget Branded Despia deck that fits how I like to play.

  • @yurisei6732
    @yurisei6732 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +20

    What I've noticed about casual play is that once you get a few years behind the meta, the range of decks that have reasonable matchups against each other expands massively. I can whip out a Fortune Lady deck and have a decent chance of winning just by recurring the synchro a bunch. I think because these decks involve larger packages and fewer starters, you get more variation between duels, and fewer situations where someone opens their perfect combo. Which is a bit luck-sack, but if we didn't like having a bit of luck influence, we'd have houseruled "choose your starting hand" decades ago.
    The challenge to enjoying casual play is that no one is supporting what I consider Good Yugioh. Goat is popular but doesn't feel like Yugioh. Edison is somewhat popular but predates the archetype boom. Date-of-release-based restrictions on which cards are legal just isn't the right approach to creating an optimal format.

    • @Hiushisan
      @Hiushisan 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +6

      I agree, making formats limiting cards usable by when they were released can be fun, but it is imperfect. Limiting things to the synchro era or earlier leaves out a bunch of problematic modern cards, but it also ends up leaving out newer decks that don't see any play, Like Aquaactresses or Chemicritters.
      An idea I've had for a while is a lot more complicated, but would likely make for a healthier environment. Making tiered formats like Smogon does for Pokemon, where lower-tier stuff can be used in higher tiers, but not the other way around. So your Tearlaments and Snake-Eyes would be Uber, while your Vehicroids and Venoms would be NU.
      Obviously, there would also have to be tiers for individual cards as well, which is where the complicated nature comes into play, not to mention that not all parts of an archetype are created equal. E Heroes might get UU, but Flame Wingman/Rampart Blaster/Steam Healer are not the same as Sunrise/Neos Wingman/Absolute Zero.

And we regularly play this rather than our 'best' decks with all the meta cards. Because it's more fun, it's more balanced. We don't know whose gonna win based on who went first. And the duels are always more exciting than active bonfire, resp? Ash blossom.

    I deliberately play bad casual decks that are worse than rogue. The decks I typically play include Gate Guardian, pure Flame Swordsman, Pure Shining Sarcophagus, Gren Maju/Golden Castle of Stromberg, the new Exodia support, and Darklords. When I play on duelingbook and ask my opponents to bring weak decks of roughly the same strength I regularly have people telling me how much they enjoyed playing against my deck compared to other decks running around. In my Darklord deck, for example, I run 10,000 Dragon as well as Legendary Maju Garzett for solely the meme value because I'm there to have fun and make lolzy plays instead of being a 20-minute combo break-my-board sweatlord. And at best my decks might get one negate monster on the field. Moreover all of these decks have turns that are reasonable in length. If you're casual like me you have to make your own fun in Yugioh and it's a shame that Konami wont do more to accomodate those who don't like the current formats.

But you can almost always find someone who’s best suited to face a deck of your power. While there’s still something’s I could complain about, these concerns rarely come up during the casual games. Best part is if I get tired of modern I just hop back into goat or Edison! I still can cook weird decks for those formats. They don’t seem to get stale. I respect your honesty in coming out and saying that keeping your view count up is one of your priorities. Of course it's true for almost any TH-camr, but few are quick to admit that there are real "business" considerations regarding their content.
    I'm one of those who really appreciate the themed, flavorful dues you guys play. For me, the fun of tabletop gaming is in the byplay between the players as the game state gradually develops and they try to outmaneuver each other. I've tried watching more modern competitive-style duels, but it so often comes down to the players just shuffling their cards between their decks, hands, and GYs until there's 8000+ damage available and a player declares victory. I imagine that if I were one of the players, I'd take a book with me to keep busy while waiting for a turn to end. When Duel Links introduced Trickstars, I once set my phone down while the AI started its turn, made a decent sandwich, and came back to find the turn hadn't finished yet (the game log recorded 15 summons in that turn). I quit soon after.
    I do understand how that style of game can be fun, especially for players who treat the intricate card interactions as puzzles to solve, but I prefer to do puzzles on my own rather than with an opponent or as a spectator.

    The key takeaway here is relaxing.
    Old school formats tend to be much more relaxing to play since you're not going to auto lose if you cant make or break a board on the first turn.
    The slower formats also tend to allow for more whacky techs to be messed with in decks (for example I play The fiend megacyber, basically cyber dragon before cyber dragon, in my chaos warrior deck for goat format and it puts in work).

    Recently a random channel decided to upload the entire Yugi vs Kaiba battle city final in Japanese. I showed it to some friends who either only play modern yugioh because they play with me or because their introduction was modern yugioh. The result from showing them the duel was unanimously "I wish playing yugioh could have back and forth like that" or "I miss old school yugioh". Obviously meta yugioh was always a thing, even back in 2004, but that sentiment plays a big role on whether or not people want to play yugioh in general.
    Having content in that vain I think is very important, its because of your videos I even thought to buy structure decks to play with friends in person in a sort of round robin because the games last longer and just feel better.

I see where you coming from and yes, it is true that those exciting plays are cool to watch on classic decks, but that doesn't mean that never happens in modern. And not saying you're making excuses up, but I always explain my effects and talk while playing and have no problems with it, contrary to the popular belief of having to be 100% focused looking at your cards and just saying "special, response?".

  • @Zanzuki93
    @Zanzuki93 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

    I think the reason why casual is more interesting is because the decks actually have weaknesses not to say that meta doesn't have weaknesses they absolutely do. They have significantly less and as a result when they pull off their big scary end board you need very specific cards and hope it is enough. I like that you brought up brain control what makes it a strong card is you are taking a monster you opponent went through a lot of effort to summon and using it against them which now begs the question does your opponent let you destroy them with said monster or do they destroy their stolen monster to protect them? Heck what if you just use it to summon one of your own monsters? A lot of things can happen from a card like brain control however there is just as many things that can go wrong. Meta might not prepare for this exact scenario but they might have something equivalent. So casual decks have to deal with potential holes in their strategy and could be interrupted however maybe the opponent only has 1 and you can quickly recover from it without a easy way of getting to another interruption. Basically with casual decks their is smaller likelihood of your opponent always having the out. Not to say they cannot draw it however they might draw it too late or even too early for it to be useful.

However, I understand the power scaling is high octane, but it's like a flash fire; it burns hot, but for such a short time that it never lasts. For example, imagine a UFC fight where only 1 fighter is throwing punches and kicks for the entire round while the other fighter just sits there and takes there, then for round 2 the other fighter tries to throw a punch, just for 1st fighter to start throwing more punches and kicks while the other fighter is forced to sit there again. As someone who stopped playing Yugioh back in 2010 and played a bit of Master Duel Solo content when that came out, god damn is the mental load of everything that is happening insanely high now. If you don't know how any given archetype functions it is not an easy task to grasp what is going on. Hell, I remember back in high school showing a friend my Gladiator Beast deck and he was floored at what that could do compared to the Yugioh he knew and I imagine GBs are insanely tame by modern standards. Also, as someone who's gotten more interested in Yugioh again recently it was specifically your video on Lightsworn that did it since that was an archetype that seemed so cool to me back when I was still playing and I wanted to see what the video was about and honestly it seemed sweet. The difference between casual duels and competitive duels is:
    Competitive decks: 1% of cards that exist.
    Casual decks: 99% of cards that exist.
    Casual decks have the freedom to choose what cards they want to use, making separate duels actually different from each other. A lot of competitive decks go for the same (or very similar) combos every single duel, and it gets stale. People who only play modern meta might not even realize just how many cards exist, they're too busy calling said cards "Bad" for not being in the top 1% of power level.

    I'm more on the casual side myself as well, and what I have noticed is that people love playing decks that are just below competitive with some jank cards added to it. Especially in a draft setting. I'm on Hardleg's server and there are a bunch of people there who host deck build challenge tournaments that are very casual orriented. The most attended tournaments have been the 2 draft tournaments, where we use YGOPRO's pack simulator to make our own packs to have the players draft from. While it takes a lot of time and effort to set up such a tournament (pack creation and testing), and getting the balance right between all of the packs, it has been an incredible fun way to play this game. Would definitly recommend

    The one thing i always wanted you guys to try, was playing with 2013-2016 era decks like BA, shadolls, satellars, qlis etc. The duels are fast enough to not look "boring", but nowhere near as fast as modern duels that people have trouble following.

    Low key a fun idea can be battles of massive archetypes and see how they differ (also no outside hand traps or engines). Like performapal has sooo many cards so have 3 of everything but each player drafts the cards from entire pool to see how they differ. Can even do chaos since there’s endless chaos cards too like chaos dragon thunder or warrior in particular.

    My favorite play from you guys that was so hype was during your rare hunter where Alec wagered his lava golem and on the turn he played lava golem to attempt to burn you for game and I thought Paul was done, Paul used two-pronged attack to kill lava golem and then swing for game. That was more hype to me than any modern duel play.

    I’d say modern decks are still fun if you take out engines and hand traps that aren’t associated with that archetype. You should try duel videos like that. Since I feel there’s tons of cards for certain decks that never see any play. Would be cool to see the intended way the deck was designed.

    I like to make use of my surplus/common cards (for financial reason-lets face it, we have a ton of unused cards), as i pick random cards and play them with my friend; while attempting to create a unique deck, or have some type of challenge. Like, build a strategy around or involves Dreamsprite.
    My friend and i, used to be competitive, and he didn’t have patience for technical rules. I played Reckless Greed when he played Giant Trunade. He thought that I couldn’t do that, but a normal trap is spell speed 2, and either he forgot that, or couldn’t contextualize that play. Anyway, that was our last duel. So, years later, i told him, we’re playing yugioh, but with basic cards, nothing too complicated or combo-heavy.
    I get it, though, filming makes for different a 3rd person watching a non-meta deck duel. If i were to film a particular deck that needs some explanations, i would have to put up a graphic of card text, highlight it ala Master Duel when an effect is currently being checked (ala chess, when you call for Check). That quality of life, in Master Duel is so good, in previous games, i had to parse which part of the card’s text is making the game prompting me for confirming an action.

I've tried to get my buddy into modern yugioh for like 5 years but it's really difficult to convince someone to learn a 20+ step combo and also line variations for when you get hit with interruption. My friend and I play super casual decks, almost like anime. We pick an archetype, and try to use only 1 of each of the cards from the archetype (unless 3 is absolutely required), even if some of the cards are garbage. The duels are usually so fun and engaging, with amazing back and forth, and comebacks. We did a Bakura vs Mako battle and my friend managed to get Destiny Board finished the turn before i would have won. The laughs and fun we have is priceless.

    Narrative Yu-gi-oh is the main way I want to play, as a turbo-casual yugi-boomer. I still like playing powerful cards and combinations but I like when there is some effort and luck needed to pull it off. I can clearly see the appeal of super efficient deck searching, hand traps, and special summoning engines especially with big prizes on the line, but I just play Yu-gi-oh at home and to kill time at the LGS. I keep a handful of decks at similar power levels (GX / 5Ds kind of stuff) that generally play well with each other and am open to offering a game with them to anyone interested.

    I completely agreed that casual oldschool videos are more fun to watch. I will only say that it doesn't have to be caveman yugioh with the vanilla monsters. I quite like the point in time where vanilla monsters weren't really a thing anymore and basically all the monsters being used were effect monsters. Simple cards like Maximum Six, Vampire Lady, Legendary Fiend, Gear Golem the Moving Fortress or cards like Earthquake or Shift or Interdimensional Matter Transporter.
    To me the best period in time is after GOAT, but before Edison. That's where I had the most fun

    I commented after a mere moment or two into this, now, after listening to the full video. I think you could make videos explaining and showing a meta deck while everyone else tries playing older decks into it, partly as a joke, but also to showcase and teach a new deck to everyone while they all express the all too common woes of being completely out matched deck to deck. Like a heraldry deck playing against a kashteria deck.

    I think casual duels are just plainly more fun. I left the game years ago because of the changing landscape. The games got way too fast and as others have expressed it's not fun to sit there for 15 minutes while you either get FTK'd or OTK'd by your opponent before you had a chance to do anything. Casual duels allowed for more lengthy games where each person takes their turn and sets up their board. There was the thrill of both players being low on LP and then clutch wins would occur. I've recently been coming back but just in the casual sense. No tournaments just a casual get together with others in the community.

    Whenever my opponent starts to combo off and I dont have any handtraps. I literally start playing the roguelike mode and can sometimes setup my entire strategy in that map and lookup to see the enemy still hasnt finished their turn.

      Yeah. 5D's Era was definitely Yugiohs prime. It was starting to get into comboing, but it wasn't anywhere near where we are at today, where you either have a full board of all of your boss monsters by turn 1 or you are guaranteed to lose in turn 2. It allowed a few sick combos, but no combo was so opressive that Yugioh turned into a single player game. There was still back and forth. 5D's was easily the prime of Yugioh.

    I really enjoyed the recent light vs dark-modern-not meta duel as much as the rare hunters, themed duels in general are great. Do you take suggestions? If so, how about some duels where you randomly get a) an attribute b) a type and c) a time period and you can only build a deck around those limitations to show off your deck building skills and knowledge. Kinda like creating a character for the anime. I bet sealed product duels are sometimes expensive and the cards are never to be used again 😂

If i had a suggestion it would be this to mesh the preferences of your audience every once in a while Try having a tourney where you are allowed up to 3 forbidden cards in your deck however the catch is each player has to pick a different forbidden card from the others. It would be fun to see the forbidden cards getting some screen time and it would interest all of us just to see what kind of jank you all would come up with o.o food for thought
