The pink lake looks like a sweet strawberry juice lake where we can swim and sip on its scarlet aroma. Too bad it's actually salty and full of bacteria I've never heard of!
I heard the second story about the chewing this morning on NPR. An important thing left out of the SciShow reporting was that the participants did not have to swallow the raw meat. At least, that seemed important to me since my first thought on hearing that there were participants made to rip off chunks of raw goat was Ew...science.
Love when your videos mention Australia's quwerks. Not enough showcasing of Australia's unique environment and discoveries in science and space. But still a great channel none the less
+Malaquias Alfaro No, but when I mentioned litojonny and his infamous question on the livestream, Hank's eyes light up and he asked us "Oh is litojonny there in the stream!?" Then he proceeded to turn to the others and explained "litojonny is the one with the hairy anus." None of the others even acknowledged Hank's statement, and kept doing what they were doing. Hank seemed a little saddened, and the stream went on.
I saw a study that suggested that another contributing factor of smaller jaws was that when humans started to walk upright they also started to fight by punching.. at the face... and breaking jaws. Smaller jaw meant they were harder to break.
Why does the body stop natural production of creatine when one regularly intakes creatine supplements? I'm sure all the "wannabe gym heads" would love an answer. Also there's a typo in the description, trail instead of trial! Keep up the great work... Best TH-cam channel ever.
the body doesn't waste energy making stuff that it gets through consumption. It's probably similar to why we don't produce vitamin c (we eat tons of vitamin c rich food) but cats produce vitamin c because all they eat is meat. Our bodies evolved to stop making vitamin c because it was wasteful.
It would be hilarious if they actually made a video about the hair on the human body and what purpose it serves on different spots (yes, even the rectum).
This is a good argument against the raw food movement. If we've been cooking our food for half a million years, then our digestive tracks have adapted to this sort of diet by now and will prefer cooked food over raw.
I just saw this SciShow video where you told about the human jaw had gotten weeker in prehistoric times. I saw a youtube video that hit the topic from another direction. This reasercher who did reaserch about human muscler deseases looking at the data coming when they were mapping the human geneome. he saw a gene that would surely cause a muscular weakness. Futher reasarch showed that it was what caused the jaw to be weaker allowing the place where the three human skull bones to fuse later in life allowing the brain to continue growing into the thirties. Sorry I can't spell, I am mentally disabled.
I like Lake Hillier, because it shares my last name, albeit with a different spelling. It's a surprisingly rare name, considering it's based on the occupation of a roofer (Thatcher is a subset). It's also the capital of Jersey.
Exuse me.. but haloquadra walsbyi is actually green. It is also an AMAZINGLY AWESOME prokaryote.. so it might be supercool to make a video about that specific micro organism. It is SQUARE! i mean.. seriously..! it's also a halofyl and therefore an extremofyl.. so yeah.. cool thing!
Quick question: is the singular form of bacteria not bacterium? If yes, was it a slip-up that noone noticed, or a reference I didn't understand ("[...] and that bacteria is typically found in places [...]" 1:45)? Or do I just suck at listening and he actually said bacterium? I get that this is a minor issue, but somehow it's these little things that keep on bugging me from time to time, so I'm hoping for an answer here.
@SciShow I was really interested on reading up on the second part of this, but somehow neither of your sources works for me? I get a 404 on the later one and the first one seems to require me to be a journalist. Any ideas how i could up on them? Or could you give me the name and some details of the study so i could get it via my university? Thanks~
+FortuitusVideo Veggies will counter that meat takes more energy to grow, per calorie, than veggies. Veggies will tell you, that there is not enough space to have vegetables and meat, a healthy diet, for everyone. So they want to force everyone to eat vegetables. What they don't tell you is, that industrialized vegetable growing is a lot more efficient than it used to be and that certain areas of our planet cannot be used for growing, but most certainly for keeping live-stock. The big problem isn't eating meat, the big problem is eating meat, that was held on fertile soil and fed with food that is good for human consumption. A mountain goat, fed with only the grass and leaves it could find in the area, is a lot more eco-efficient than a cow that was fed with grain, corn and soy.
Well excuse me! I am vegen and I'm pretty sure I have gotten way healthier then when I did eat meat so don't say anything like that. I hope you realized that your comment can hurt a lot of people because many vegans get bullied cause they are, well, vegan! (I get bullied for being Vegan so back off)
First, it is very cool that one of your videos parked interest in the research. Second... People were fed _raw_ goat meat!? Or does "unprocessed" have a different meaning for meat?
Had to come watch a real science show after watching watch mojo's attempt at science (today's video on mice). Keep it up Hank Green and all you wonderful people at SciShow :)
Wait, so how do you know the team was inspired by your video to investigate the lake? DId they reach out to you or mention it in an interview? I wanna know how this all went down!
they were talking about this on npr today on science friday and they said they were chewing raw goat meat and then spitting it out so as to avoid food poisoning
Wait, no one took interest in finding out why the lake was pink until now? Seriously every lake around here gets tested for multitudes of crap a hundred times every year for no reason other than it being a learning experience for university students.. and they just now take some of the pink water to study? o.o
Very good and informative video, but the outro is kind of loud, and having sound on the linked video is very confusing especially if the talking starts so quickly after Hank stops talking in this video. I prefer the outros with only the SciShow theme in them :)
So, if you take some water from Lake Hillier, purify it ( get rid of the bacteria/salt so it's safe for human drinking ), will it still retain its pink color?
I don't understand why the jaws would get smaller though; there is no benefit for them getting smaller only an option that allows smaller jaws to also exist.
But if foods took less force to chew, and there was less of a need for a larger jaw, that wouldn't be an evolutionary push away from large jaws, just less of a push for it. Maybe there is something else that makes it a problem to have a larger jaw? (Not trying to debunk anything, just confused)
When I hear him say Lake Hillier, I kept thinking of Lake Hylia from Zelda. I used to pronounce it as Hillier as a kid. Come to think of it Hillier is a slightly odd name for a lake, seeing as means "more hilly".
I am sorry but this is not the only pink lake, there are many in the sulanate Oman. Pink lakes have already been analysed, by Raffael jovine from Nutrico. In Fact he has cultivated the Algea before and found it is high in lipids and protienn
What a jaw dropping discovery! I'll show myself out.
*Slow claps*
+Belgium i live in you o.O
+Bart De Bock That's a pity.
+Brandon Hall No, how about I show you out!
Do me a favor, yeah? *points outside* GET OUT! FUCK OFF, will you, GET OUT!
Petition to re-name the lake some sort of pun, like Lake Floyd.
LMAO YES
This aged well
@@BLT214 yes
Paaahaha yes!
Hubba Bubba Lake is good too
Look at SciShow, indirectly contributing to our body of scientific knowledge!
ALWAYS interesting and worth watching!!!
Sci show got this recognized...that's so cool!!
there's another pink water body in Aussie, excepts it's more of a pond. it's next to the west gate bridge
Yeah i wonder if it has the same bacteria as in lake hillier.
The pink lake looks like a sweet strawberry juice lake where we can swim and sip on its scarlet aroma. Too bad it's actually salty and full of bacteria I've never heard of!
it is the world's largest source of hubba bubba bubblegum flavouring.
I LOVE THESE VIDEOS
We did it, guys! We actually made science happen instead of just reporting on it!
I heard the second story about the chewing this morning on NPR. An important thing left out of the SciShow reporting was that the participants did not have to swallow the raw meat. At least, that seemed important to me since my first thought on hearing that there were participants made to rip off chunks of raw goat was Ew...science.
I think I'll go for a dip, even though I'm more of a salt-loving macrobe.
so its because of SciShow that the world solved a question.
It should be re named 'Lake Nerdfightaria'
+AC SpecOps Sounds boring
Great video as always, Hank!
Thanks for the info on our lake.
I'm from Western Australia.
Keep up the great work !

Well played, SciShow. Well played.
I remember watching that video when you guys uploaded it.
Can't believe I've been subscribed for such a long time already... How time flies.
what about the mystery ON WHY I HAVE HAIR AROUND MY ANUSSSSSSS??!!!
tis truly a great question
+litojonny cancer
Did Hank ever answer this?
+litojonny I wonder if they'll do an episode on this on April Fools.
+Malaquias Alfaro
No, but when I mentioned litojonny and his infamous question on the livestream, Hank's eyes light up and he asked us "Oh is litojonny there in the stream!?"

Definitely my favorite web series on TH-cam. Also Crash Course. I owe my A's in Chem and A&P to Hank Green.
I love that chewing animation. 3:16

So many audible promos today in the community at large :P
got audible last month, already spent 160$ on books LOLOLO im addicted
It might be nice to include a link to the previous video on Lake Hillier so we can refresh our memory about it.
Here i am to learn about a lake and suddenly jaw study.
i love this everyday video business, and its still the same top quality content we all enjoy

Are you guys going to do a video on AlphaGo?

Just came from watching their video about it

So cool that we're able to find out about history just from bacteria found in a lake.
That lake looks pretty.
I'm honestly surprised it took THIS long for someone to study it. It's pink!!!
I like Lake Hillier, because it shares my last name, albeit with a different spelling. It's a surprisingly rare name, considering it's based on the occupation of a roofer (Thatcher is a subset). It's also the capital of Jersey.

It would be interesting to see if there are any links between the organisms in Salt Lake and Pink Lake. Great Video!! 8-0

Hey I live just round the corner from a pink lake called Pink Lake in Esperance, Australia. Weird.
The last part was unneeded. No need to push a view on people. Just solve the damn pink lake mystery.
I'm never this early :D
Hi everyone!
Hey!
Hello
And...?
Hi Dr. Nick!
Could you bring back the weird places series?
Ya need a longer pause between end of episode audio and preview audio starting, boyo.
+Robert Williams Or just drop the preview audio thing entirely.
First, it is very cool that one of your videos parked interest in the research.
Second... People were fed _raw_ goat meat!?
Or does "unprocessed" have a different meaning for meat?
Ugg it's been 3 years?! I feel so old..
Bit of a heads up, at the end both of the links to the other SciShow channels link to SciShow kids.
They actually investigated because of your video? Did they tell you?
+SheosMan117 He mentioned it in the video
I know that, but still, I'm interested in more info.
Had to come watch a real science show after watching watch mojo's attempt at science (today's video on mice). Keep it up Hank Green and all you wonderful people at SciShow :)
So it's cooking pink slime on my George Foreman grill that's making my jaw weak.
I'm doing a little pre-30 bucket list.
And it is?
And it is?
One, not get asked about it. This stuff can be personal. One thing on the list, though, is reading the Harry Potter series for the first time.
Aww I was hoping it was full of pink lemonade. That's cool too I guess.
So is it still considered dangerous to get in
2:20 hey look it's the gorillaz
how old are you?
Wait, so how do you know the team was inspired by your video to investigate the lake? DId they reach out to you or mention it in an interview? I wanna know how this all went down!
Well yea but the cutting and pounding cost energy too.
My current thesis is focused on this group of microorganisms!
they were talking about this on npr today on science friday and they said they were chewing raw goat meat and then spitting it out so as to avoid food poisoning

We have those in Puerto Rico bro, ill take a picture next time I'm around :D....
wow I was just watching it today your old video of this one and I'm on time I never see your videos on time I usually see the ones in the past
We were technically different animals when we made tools.
Wow.
Surely it would take more energy to pound vegetables into pulp than to chew them a few extra times, no?
I now wonder if these pink lakes might explain the Purple Earth Hypothesis. Imagine our Earth with the ocean in different colors instead of blue.
Hey, it's crash course!
So, if you take some water from Lake Hillier, purify it ( get rid of the bacteria/salt so it's safe for human drinking ), will it still retain its pink color?
+Ember Flame Probably not.
are we talking about humans or lake hiller bacteria
Is the water to salty to filter?
There is a pink lake in Senegal too
What causes numbness? And how do people whistle
Decreasing jaw size could also have lessened the muscles connecting the mandible to the cranium, allowing brain size to expand.
How do I get this "Journal: Nature"?
Yes!
Meat!
All hail the Masterbutcher!
When can I drink it???? He said strawberry hue!!!!
I don't understand why the jaws would get smaller though; there is no benefit for them getting smaller only an option that allows smaller jaws to also exist.
Hmm... Archaea...
Great. I can't think of it without thinking of MGS5 lol
Very good episode indeed. Good to bad thumbs ratio over 100 to 1. I guess some people don't like pink or don't like evolution.
Most of the source links aren't working!
Hearing the bacteria names in the pink lake makes my stomach hurts thinking if I ever drink the water from it.
Mashed carrots, here please! :D
Wow I remember when the first video on this was new... Makes me feel old 😂
wow i'd love to be part of a research study where i just ate food
Why are the captions double-spaced?
But if foods took less force to chew, and there was less of a need for a larger jaw, that wouldn't be an evolutionary push away from large jaws, just less of a push for it. Maybe there is something else that makes it a problem to have a larger jaw? (Not trying to debunk anything, just confused)
why cant we mold diamond or shape it for tools?
But doesn't mashing the carrots take more energy than chewing?
+Dantick09 Tools OP
the meat and 2 veg does not only make up the usual diet of foragers in Africa today but basically all Irish peoples diets today too.
More like 1/3 potatoes, followed by 1/6 carrot, 1/3 other vegetables and 1/6 meat. Serve with a glass of milk.
+Colm Ryan true true
