1.) A tractor-trailer rig hits an icy bridge in Winnie, Texas and jackknifes into the median, barely missing another truck that had lost control moments earlier.
2.) A pickup driver, just warned by the photographer about the ice on the bridge, loses control and slides into the barrier.
3.) Dashcam view of the same incident.
4.) An SUV loses control on an icy bridge in Cleveland, Texas just after rounding the curve out of view. The sound of the slide is heard.
5.) Dashcam: A pickup nearly slides out of control on I-10 east of Houston, but recovers.

I got black ice at night once with my 1500 silverado extended cab truck. In less than a heartbeat, I was two lanes over in the diet center divider! Miraculous that I didn't got my brakes by natural reaction and managed to steer correctly to straighten out. I grew up and live in an area where ice was almost never a concern. Praise God. Had my three little daughter in there with me and i wasn't speeding or daydreaming at all.

This makes me grateful I live where there is NEVER ice or snow on any roads.
Well I thought that too for a long time until one morning in Feb, 1985 when Phoenix, AZ got one of it's rare snows (the last one being in 1937) I made it thru the morning fine but score of people doing 55-65 mph on the interstate slide off and a few flipped over. They had never drivien in snow before.

Ice will trip you up. Sometimes even when you know it's there. Remember, bridges usually freeze before the road does so be extra careful crossing bridges.
The cause of the wrecks were due to hitting the breaks on ice! "That's a big no no in a big truck" considering that it was a Swift truck explains everything.
Also when your wipers start to ice up turn your A/C on the defroster to cool the windshield down, sounds crazy and cold but it works.
I've legally logged over 2 million miles and I've seen it all.

2010V6RAV4 no the heat will melt the ice or snow and your blades will build up with ice
You can actually run your A/C along with high temp. The idea is the condenser coils will remove some of the humidity from the air. However, usually in cold temps there is hardly any humidity outside so it's usually not necessary. However if it is below freezing and humid it can help to run the A/C as well. Main thing though, for your windshield, is for the glass to be as warm as possible to melt snow and ice on the outside and prevent condensation on the inside.

Bridges freeze before roads. Take your foot off the gas and coast over them.

Even taking your foot off the gas can cause engine braking, causing the same affect as braking on icy roads. Try to stay light n steady on the gas. Only took me 4 yrs to respond! Lol
No engine brake off, just let off the gas and steer out of it if you jack knife. It happened to me last year I just left off the gas and counter steered and got out of it and prayed to god the whole time
Better yet, don't even TOUCH the brakes if you feel hydroplane or sliding on ice, or you end up like Mr. Blue Toyota. Also cruise control is a BIG NO NO in slippery conditions. Take that from a Canadian who drives on icy hwy's every day during winter.

Im a trucker with Swift Transportation and I'll tell you this I will park that truck in a heartbeat the second conditions become unsafe or I feel its to dangerous , no load is worth my life or the lives of those around me while i drive.
Pretty fly for a WiFi That’s not true. I work at Swift and we aren’t allowed to drive in snow. If it’s raining heavy or high winds. If we don’t feel safe. We get off the road.
I wish people would learn that you never hit your breaks when you start sliding. steer into the skid and let yourself coast.

I'm going to hazard a guess that most Texans haven't had much experience with icy roads.
To my southern friends : things to look for and do , avoid speed on bridges curves hills. when on a bridge or curve or hill with ice avoid locking brakes to slow down .. the only thing you will end up doing is lose your steering ..remember wind gust over and under a bridge so water turns to ice quicker as you can see in the video and yes ABS helps but not how you would think aim your steering wheel ONLY in the path you want to go ..do not over correct it ...love Canada

+Marty Martin Yeah, but this case is special. Watch 50 times if you need to, but... the big truck driver didn't turn his wheels, or jam the brakes. It is just driving casual, and then (maybe also because traction control switch is "off") you see the drive axles going sideways (not the trailer) & the guy didn't brake at first. So it was black ice as we call it, the most thin, almost invisible, packet thigh ice on the road + a coat of water on top of it. The slickiest possible form of ice. Tractor went just a bit sideways which could have been possible to correct... BUT THEN YOU ARE SUDDENLY PAST THE BRIDGE AND ON REGULAR ASPHALT AFTER THIS. So all 8 tires suddenly get back the grip (hear the tire rubber sound on the video; which you can't make that on ice) and since the tractor was now heading left with his front wheels still straight, truck just threw itself off the highway.
+Denis Charbonneau Also possible driver did downshift a gear just when he was over the bridge (at the worst moment).He should have just slightly corrected a bit to the right with his front steer.

+Denis Charbonneau the best thing to do is drop the truck out of gear and coast over the bridge/ice. what caused the truck to jackknife like that was the fact the drive wheels broke free and slipped out from under the truck from applying throttle, letting off or breaking exceeding the tires slip angle. I learned this one night up in the northwest (montana) first freeze where my truck stepped out because i had cruise control on where the drive wheels spun cruise kicked in and backed the throttle up causing the wheels to slide i was lucky I was on the wheel and keep the fronts going down the road next bridge i slowed down let off still in gear and it did it again i was like what the hell but started to put things together after feeling the front wheels had some grip so third bridge i popped the clutch while going slow where the truck went strait as an arrow. another thing black ice can be seen it is shinny looks like the road is polished/glass

I once as a trucker drove so tired I thought the bridge icing before roadway said ice cold beer ahead no joke I like the new hours of service rules that keep truckers and the public safe .

David Alard - The pay is above what a lot of other training companies pay. You should be able to find a pay scale at swifttruckingjobs.com. People rag on Swift for several reasons, the main one is that Swift is a training company. They seem to forget that they had to start somewhere too. A lot of drivers dislike Swift claiming it's companies like them that drive rates down, and will haul freight for cheap. That's not really true either, rates are determined just like the price for everything else.... supply and demand. Others claim Swift is a "dangerous" company, and while it's true Swift has accidents the accident rate is lower than other companies such as Fed Ex. Other people have their own reasons. I wouldn't let them and their comments deter you.
I drive a little Japanese rice burner sports coupe car and use a local commuter highway to get to an from my job. Every year after a snow fall, I pass by several road warriors in their invincible 4x4 SUVs and 4x4 Pick Ups that are victims of slide offs. The best was a a few weeks ago, a warrior in an H2 blew by me like I was parked and when I passed by him a few miles down the road, he had the invincible ride upside down in the drainage ditch.
4x4 only means you can get going easier, but you can't stop any easier and you shouldn't be driving any faster then a normal 2wd car and actually probably should be driving slower since 4x4's are usually heavier and will need more room to stop on snow and ice.
Ohioan 1 A few years back I was witness to a rear end collision, it was winter and as usual for this area, the roads weren't plowed.
I was at a traffic signal in a busy retail area when the light turned green for me and as I about to let let up on the brake and proceed, an SUV headed toward the red light caught my eye and paused. It plowed into the back of a car stopped for the red light pushing it thru the intersection, had I raced off like so many do at a green I would have been t-boned.
Point is, the traffic cop told the woman driving the SUV "you have 4 wheel drive which puts 4 drive wheels in contact with snow and ice rather than 2 and ABS is useless in these conditions". The guy she hit was taken to the hospital and she was issued a ticket for reckless driving. I signed my statement and decided to run for the safety of my home.
That's funny. I drive a 4x4 pickup (almost always in 2wd) and every year after a snowfall, I pass several japanese rice burners in the ditch. Never been in the ditch in 38 years of driving.
butlerproman I've been driving for 43 years, the last 8 eleven in rice burners. Never been off the road and have never slid into anyone or thing. Guess you and I are pretty good drivers.
i been driving truck from last june. i drive to BC and back. to my surprise i see alot of 4x4 off road crashed or just stack. the problem is most people who drive 4x4 think they can do anything with their car. i had 2 bmw 530 (2001) never been been in ditch or off road in them
You can see from the video that the front started to slide to the left and once they hit the part of the road without ice, all the sudden traction was restored but in the absolute worse way possible. A tractor trailer simply just cannot steer the front wheels in time to correct it. Consequently, the front wheels with traction end up pulling the whole truck off road.
finally someone else that know what there talking about. if he had a good 2-3 more seconds to counter steer he might have bean fine but he only was in the slide for 2 seconds before he went off the ice and got grip back. he was going a bit to fast but even at slow speeds it can still happen.
As a driver and Safety Supervisor for Pathmark, Paul's Trucking then Grocery Haulers before their 96' shut down, I had my share of black ice bang-ups.. Even the most seasoned driver can't escape it.. While driving for the above, I was an instructor for Smith and Solomon school and did all I could to teach new guys what hazards are out there. It's a good career, respect the road. Be safe out there people, DRIVE SAFE.

No don't be scared. I have been driving since age 13, all sizes of vehicles in all weathers (I am a trucker too). Just don't brake hard like stupid or change lanes drastically or fuel pedal to the metal all the sudden. I don't understand why that trucker did what he did. I just returned from Kelowna through Roger Pass last week in a snow storm and made it.
And make sure you don't keep your jake on, that can lead to a disaster as well.. i go all over Alberta, with super B fuel tankers and it can be pretty sketchy in a lot of places!

***** What can't you understand? He was going along fine until he saw the accident in front of him and he reacted by hitting the brakes right when he was on the top of the ice patch. At that point, almost all drivers forget to release the brakes and concentrate on steering.

Drivers were not paying attention to driving and did not react correctly to a slide. Do not accelerate in a slide, do not brake, do not make large counter steering adjustments, have Traction Control TC on in temperatures below 40degrees in case there is a windchill freezing a bridge, immediately take your foot off the accelerator when you feel traction loss or spin. Coast in a slide and allow bendix system to kick in and regain traction control, once you stop spinning you may gently apply pressure to the foot brake for a second but then let off the brake again completely and gently accelerate as you always want to be pulling your trailer.
A lot of people need to see this video. Good educational tool.

I was driving in Massachusetts at night years ago and hit a patch of black ice. Suddenly, the car started heading towards a telephone phone. Fortunately I had seen a video of how to react when in that situation. I steered hard and was able to get the rear wheels to spin back under the car and came to a stop in time. Everyone needs to have training on what to do under these circumstances to avoid injuring themselves or others.

It looks dumb to me, too. However, people that have never experienced bridge icing, or rarely experience it, don't expect it, and panic when their vehicle starts sliding. Not a valid excuse for me, or you, but it is valid for some people. (The joke... Swift drivers are automatically excused. {not true, but that's the usual talk})

The driver pushed on the brakes *after* the slipping made his vehicle turn diagonally.
Roads are usually slightly slanted downwards, and differentials can make the car turn diagonally once one wheel loses traction. So the turning is out of the driver's control once the wheels slip. He needs to control when the vehicle *regains* traction.
Once the tires regain traction, they will propel the vehicle in *whatever direction they are pointed*. This is bad if the car is angled diagonally, like the blue pickup truck. I'm not sure what the solution is, but maybe you can lock the wheels with the brakes or handbrake, so that the wheels don't propel the car in a diagonal direction.
Front wheels can only be angled to a certain degree, so it's not always possible to keep them aligned with the road. If not, then angle them perpendicular to the road, so they slide instead of gaining traction.
Matthias Dailey with rear wheel drive vats you can release accelerate pedal and it will start strating out. With front wheel drive need to keep pushimg it. All wheel drive usually works when yoy ley go. Steering does come into play but never lock up your breaks or what happened in this video will happen to you yrsut i drive a truck for living and just by doing this never had a problem also had 4 rwd 2 all wheel drive and 2 fwd
I'm pretty sure what we just witnessed was prime example of why you don't use a engine brake in low traction enviroments, rain or ice. the way only the drive axles stepped out i don't think he was on the service brake, i believe he was on the jake coming onto the bridge.

If the ground looks wet and you don't see water splashing up behind the tires, you're driving on ice.

From what I heard heat is not a good solution because the tires move to much water into the air. You will have a thin code of ice on everything next to your heated section, potentially making it worse. That said, they are a great solution for bike or pedestrian bridges.
Here in Germany we have multiple bridges and steep slopes which have fixed salt water sprayers installed. That system works great.

The first truck went right where the front wheels were pointed...into the ditch and into the guard railing. He should have steered into the slide like a sprint car and kept his front wheels pointed in the direction of travel. Costly driver error...and yes I've done that and it works. Drivers need more training if that's a sample of how a Swift driver handles a slide

It looked like that trucker had his brakes on while sliding off the ice onto the dry pavement so it jerked him off the road. Just my opinion but I believe if he pushed in the clutch and just rolled across the bridge he would have been fine.

HighwayStuff, cruise control will do that too. You should not brake on a bridge, and not have cruise control on in rain or ice conditions.
Interstate 45 (the Julius Schepps Freeway) in Dallas, basically a viaduct, is extremely dangerous in an ice storm. It is typically closed under such situations.

He didn't slam on his breaks. It was an icy bridge.
Don't pump it if you have anti-lock brakes! You could damage the system and lose control. Press the brakes firmly and let the ABS system pump itself.
He had no time to do anything. That bridge was to short. He started sliding on the bridge and immediately hit the pavement and that acted as sort of a E brake.
If he would have turned into the slide instead of with it, he could have stayed on the pavement long enough he might have recovered... but then again, he wasn't paying attention in the first place, as demonstrated by his violent turning after he realized his slide..

"Road icing" or any weather condition, does NOT cause deaths. Motorists driving without due care and attention to the road conditions causes death.

The trucker in the video could see another truck in the ditch, but he arrogantly thought he was special and wouldn't crash like the other trucker. He was 100% wrong. He should have slowed to a stop, or at least a crawl, when he chose to venture forth into a road condition that bested the other trucker. Arrogance.
With your misinterpretation of the facts, you have erroneously associated the frequency of crashes with an excuse for bad drivers instead of accountability for their bad driving decisions.

Swift saw the other truck parked and thought 'hey this is a good spot to take a rest'
We had another ice/sleet storm 4 days later and a light snowfall a week after that and another ice storm on march the 4th.

I've hit a few ice bridges before in my fwd Hyundai; the steering gets very light --- (like the front end is off the ground)... ... Luckily I was pointed straight and just pulled the clutch in and made no sudden moves- don't touch the brakes! ... As long as you're moving straight it should re-grip on the other side.

I drove a Peterbilt 379 pulling a low-boy empty! through this Texas freeze and I made to my home terminal with no issues. Once I got in my personal vehicle and headed home I slid and lost control and hit a retaining wall. The only thing that came to mind was “thank god it wasn’t in a 18 wheeler”
Where did you get the stats for the fatalities? Extreme temps like cold (or hot) tend to produce some good numbers, but overall, winter weather usually pales in comparison to flooding, lightning, and tornadoes. 2013 stats available at... www.nws.noaa.gov/om/hazstats/sum13.pdf
The fatality stats were compiled from news reports: icyroadsafety.com/fatalitystats.shtml Currently the NWS/NOAA doesn't count ice-caused vehicle crashes in their statistics.

Ryan Kim Texas gets a winter like everyone else.. The southern part not so much. However this video takes place in southeastern Texas where ice is rare.
You apparently haven't spent much time in Texas. The northern half of Texas gets lots of nasty winter weather. I've seen many ice and snow storms in Texas, including a December sleet storm with so many spin outs and wrecks that the Texas DPS had to close I-40 in the Texas panhandle until the salt trucks could get caught up.

This is why Alabama in particular has signs on every single bridge that says “bridge may ice before road” because it most certainly does and it catches people off guard very easily when the road itself is nearly ice free.
Living in Boston and New England for 35 years you learn, when driving on ice and snow, NEVER brake, and always steer in the direction you want the car to go.. The truck crashed because he started slide, driver slammed his brakes over steering the rig. That just caused the rig to slide more, and the wheels ended up in the wrong direction, the min the tires found traction the truck was propelled in the direction the tires were aimed.. off in to the median/guard rail he went..
did you really park your car on the side of the road (distracting drivers) and then stand on the opposite side of the road (very confusing and even more distracting to the drivers) and hold a camera and film them??????? Wtf is wrong with people!!!!??

I built and maintain this web site icyroadsafety.com and its Twitter and Facebook feeds. In most cases it is not safe or practical to act as a public safety officer and warn drivers on-site. Trying to walk up an icy hill where cars are sliding down or standing along an icy interstate to try and warn people is not safe or realistic. Also, notice that I DID warn the blue truck. That was a rare case where I was safely able to warn drivers because the opposite lanes were being covered by police due to the previous accident. Furthermore, I have my job as a cameraman to do. I cannot do my job and at the same time always be a personal driver warning system. The DOT crews are almost always aware of the conditions and are out working, but they cannot be everywhere at once. My goal is to help people learn to recognize the conditions themselves beforehand. These videos have done more to bring attention to the problem than anything else I do. I'd be open to hearing your suggestions on how to do better.
***** wow just seen this reply. If I was you I'd probably get some flashy lights or something or maybe even a cheap sign that says ice ahead. But then again if these drivers are too stupid to figure out the road is slick then there really is nothing you can do to help them, I would highly recommend staying out of the way though. Just setup a tripod and move on down the road?
+Dan Robinson If you are going to out by those bridges regularly, have the forethought to wear bright orange safety gear, and hang a bright orange tarp on the back of your vehicle when you park that says "Danger! Ice!"

I was just on these stretches of road three times in the past couple of months (twice eastbound, once westbound). Thankfully, it wasn't icing season yet.
Darn good video, and yes thats just how fast it can happen, all outta nowhere. How sad for any driver to experience a thing like that, can really ruin a good day.
