The Promise: Why Albanians Saved So Many Jews During World War II

แชร์

  • While millions of Jews were being exterminated across Europe during Wold War II, many Jewish families found refuge and safety in Albania, despite German occupation. The local Jewish population increased from a few hundred to 2,000. Two Albanians recall how their families sheltered Jews and how a centuries-old tradition called Besa kept them alive.

There is little actual understanding of where this comes from. The Kanun does not concern itself with promises, as much as it concerns itself with blood. Besa is not what was given to the Jews. Besa is what what can best be translated as a "vow", and is a concept more related to loyalty. Not sure who started this extremely simplified reasoning about "besa" being the reason, as it is much cool (and a bit weird) in reality. There are two words in Albanian which usually get translated to "friend": The first is the word "mik" and the second is the word "shok". They do not have the same exact meaning though. "Shok" is more close to friend as in English, and "mik" is closer to "guest" in English (there is another modern meaning to the word meaning "inlaws" but that is irrelevant). Blood feuds are infamous in Albania and still go on, and the actual reasons why they start are outlined in the Kanun. What are the Kanun rules to be a "mik" and what does that mean for the Jews? Well, someone needs to knock and the house owner needs to let them in. Meaning that he let them in his house voluntarily. If they have weapons with them, they will be taken by the host. They will be placed in the main seat in the house. Two reasons for this: First to honor them, second so they do not mingle with the girls in the house. They will eat what the host eats. They will get heat, food and shelter. If they leave the house, they can ask to be accompanied up to whatever point they want. Once they are in the host house, whatever crime they do, it is on you. Whatever crime is done on the, it is also on the host to avenge. In fact the husband can kill the wife in two cases only in the Kanun: She is unfaithful, she breaks the rules in protecting the guest (this is referenced as to "cut the guest"). If someone mocks your guest, you would protect their honor with your life. Whoever "guest is cut" (read harmed, or dishonored) is forever shamed, everything will be given to them with the left hand. If the unthinkable happens and the guest is harmed, and the blood is not taken for this, the host is shamed and stripped of all honor, titles. You are forced to avenge the guest, even if the one who harmed them is a friend. It has consequences in the Kanun ways, the most severe ones. So strong is the idea of opening your home in the Kanun that if the host eats before the guest, they are fined. You have to understand that Albania had a provisional Nazi government, made of Albanians collaborating with the Nazi forces. They knew very well that harming the Jews who were sheltered in the homes of Albanians would inevitably result to their own death, or the death of their brothers, or sons as by Kanun laws. They did not want to risk it so they tried to avoid such a conflict as much as possible. There was no need to kill the guest, hitting them would be enough to trigger a bloodshed to remember. They were under the host protection by the very nature of the Albanian culture. "Besa", or the vow to protect, was given to the Jews not by the host. They did not need to. All they had to is say "welcome". Now, saving the Jews might have been the only good thing about the Kanun, which otherwise is medieval law and it is shameful that is still referenced in modern culture to justify murders.

Besa was a word of honor if you broke besa you and your family would become social pariahs. The Kanun was just a code of law for the very decentralized parts of the country where the government had no real authority and the communities had to enact and enforce their own laws. It’s the same a canon law for tribal societies with no central authority. When you gave besa you were basically just giving your word to keep whatever promise you had made. Besa was definitely important because the country was occupied by the nazis I doubt they cared about starting a blood feud with a bunch of poor people who’s most powerful weapon would have been a bolt action rifle against the german military

My father was born in Feb 1943 in Albania, and at that time my grans were hiding a Jewish family somewhere from ex Yugoslavia. The lady of this jewish family apart from her own children took care of my father too. My family used to make fun later on of my father calling him “The Jew” of the home! This family made it safe after the war, and I’m pretty sure that they were treated as part of our family without asking nothing in return, but unfortunately due to the 45 years of communist isolation we lost track of them! I was trying in vain to get any facts or details about this family, but we didn’t have photo or any fact about them! Albania became nevertheless a safe heaven for those Jews who entered the country and this makes me feel proud about our history

    Jews in Ottoman:
Among the few inhabitants of Constantinople ( after victory of Constantinople in 1453 by Mehmet-II, Ottoman Sultan) to have survived the Turkish seizure of the city were the Jews of the Balat quarter. Not long after the appointment of Gennadius ( the priest, first patriarch of Orthodox welcomed by Mehmed, after fall of Constantinople in 1453 ) or perhaps at the same time, Mehmed also selected a chief rabbi to preside over all the Jewish congregations of Turkey. His choice fell on Moshe Capsali, a man of piety and learning, founder of a celebrated family of scholars; Elijah Capsali, who in the sixteenth century wrote a Hebrew history of the Ottoman Empire that is still awaiting publication, may have been descended from him. The sultan, we are told, even made him a member of the imperial council
(divan) , where he was honored by a seat next to the mufti, thus gaining precedence over the Greek patriarch; furthermore, he delegated to Cap￾sali certain political powers over the Jewish congregations of Turkey. It was Moshe Capsali who assigned the taxes to be paid individually or collectively by the Jews, appointed officials to collect them, and transmitted
the proceeds to the sultan's treasury. He also possessed penal authority over all members of the Jewish community and the right to confirm the appointment of rabbis. In a word, he was the head and official representative of the Jewish community in the Ottoman Empire.
Under the Conqueror, if the accounts of Jewish contemporaries are to be believed, Turkey was a paradise for the Jews, who were cruelly oppressed in Western Europe. Jewish emigrants from Germany were overjoyed at the favored position of the Jews in Turkey. They were free to
live and trade as they pleased. There was no "golden penny" to pay, no crown taxes amounting to a third of their fortune. They could dispose freely of their property and dress as they saw fit, in silk and satin if they wished. Their enterprise found rich sources of profit, though it is true that they were soon obliged to limit their activities to commerce and moneylending. In 1454 Isaac Sarfati, a Jew born in Germany of French descent, sent a circular letter to the Jews of the Rhineland, Swabia, Styria, Moravia, and Hungary in which he spoke with enthusiasm of the fortunate conditions of the Jews under the Crescent in contrast to their yoke under the Cross, and encouraged his coreligionaries to leave the "great torture chamber" and come to Turkey. The years that followed witnessed a massive emigration of Jews to the Turkish paradise, especially from Germany. Certain countries, Italy in particular, prevented their Jews from leaving."
" There can be no doubt about Mehmed's religious tolerance. If even a part of what Isaac Sarfati wrote from Turkey in his circular letter of 1454 to the Jews of Central Europe about the favorable situation of his
coreligionaries under the Crescent was true, Mehmed's empire must have been a paradise for non-Moslem subjects (reaya) , especially Jews. Turkey, Sarfati wrote, was a country where nothing was lacking. Every man could spend his life unmolested under his fig tree and his vine. In judging this letter with its invitation to emigrate to the Ottoman Empire, we must not, of course, forget that the situation of the Jews in Central Europe
in the middle of the fifteenth century was particularly wretched, that they were subject to incessant persecution, and that measured by these condi￾tions, Turkey, where no one was molested for his faith, could promise a truly blissful life. It must also be borne in mind that in his commercial undertakings and his fiscal policy, Mehmed preferred to rely on the help of Jews, including his physician Maestro lacopo, whom he sometimes, to the dissatisfaction of the Moslems, employed as his financial adviser. But
also in Christian quarters, as it is more than once confirmed, each man could "seek salvation in his own way," complete religious freedom prevailed, and no one incurred serious difficulties because of his faith. There can be no doubt that the Christian inhabitants of places far from the seat of government were often oppressed and unjustly treated, but it is equally certain that this was not the work of the supreme authorities. The truly magnanimous treatment of non-Moslems in the Ottoman Empire under Mehmed can in large measure be attributed to his indulgence and mildness in religious matters, qualities which were in all likelihood closely
related to his own liberal ideas on religion."

Thank you for sharing. Valuable but unfortunately not promoted enough. There are, unfortunately, some shows and movies like the recent serbian tv show called Besa that hiject Besa (the Albanian Code of Honor) from its natural realm of Justice, Honor and Humanity and put it into the the realm of mafia and criminals, giving it negative connotations and promoting it as a property of mafia and criminals. In that show, there are only a few Albanian good guys, the rest of villans are Albanians (mafia and gangsters). While on one hand I am not one of those people who believe that crime-ganster-mafia shows like this one should be banned (bcs they are in essence anti-albanjan propaganda), I believe that those positive aspects of Albanian cultures (like authentic Besa, which is based on Justice and Honor, NOT blood feud/ vendetta per se) like this documentary above, should be made more visible and take much more media and public space than those naive and tasteless anti-albanian propaganda shows and movies that reduce Besa and any other Albanian cultural aspect to mafia and crime, spread in shows and movies like the recent serbian tv show called Besa, the "Taken" movie trilogy, or any other tv show or movie where most Albanians are bad guys (mafia and criminals). I think any intellegent person would like to see both sides of any coin.

Jews in Christian Byzantine Empire :
" The Jews in Galata often petty restrictions , such as not being allowed to ride on horseback , and occasional harrasment from their neighbours:
''' For their condition is very low and there is much hatred against them , which is fostered by the tanners, who throw out their dirty water in the streets before the doors of the Jewish houses and defile the Jews quarter. So, the Greeks hate the Jews, good and bad alike, and subject them to great oppression, and beat them in the streets and in every way treat them with rigour.'''
There were even some examples of officially sanctioned persecution, as under Romanos I Lekapenos ( 920-44 ). There was, however, never anything in byzantium along the lines of the savage pogroms perpetrated against the Jews in England, Germany, and elsewhere in western Europe at the time of crusades."

C'mon Zahir, why don't you check your quran and sunnah about treatment reserved for jews.. If you follow your humanity good, but if you follow your pedofet you should be doing what he says!! - that's your true religion, not just a name!! What do you do with this?
Ibn 'Umar reported Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) as saying: You will fight against the Jews and you will kill them until even a stone would say: Come here, Muslim, there is a Jew (hiding himself behind me) ; kill him." -Sahih Muslim 2921a

yes because we don‘t care about religions that much. When you ask me, I say I‘m muslim. But do I know how to pray? Do I know some prayers? did I ever have read the quran? Did I ever saw a mosque from inside? All questions I have to answer with no.

Jews saved albanians in Kosova too and we will never forget that. The jewish lop was in Kosovas side. They open the doors for kosovars to USA CONGRES AND SENAT. Eliot Engel is a loved and wellknown name among albanians. And many American senators too helped Kosovas people. So its equally in both sides. And eventhough State of Israel did take to long to recognise Kosovas indipedence they still helped a lot during times. Imposible to forget Netanyahus speech during Kosovas war where serbia with a lot of help of russis and msny arab muslim and african countrys who sent a lot of weapons to serbs ..did a lot of atrocities against albanian civilians in Kosova but Netanyahu and his governent took stand against civilian massacres comitrd by serbia and supported albanians. God bless Jewish people
