Who's pulling her strings? So let me understand. When Greta was 8 years old, some master minds went to this little girl to use her...she speaks on making the climate better for future generations. What is the endgame, what are the "puppeteers" trying to accomplish?

Education is flawed in terms of preventing and prohibiting environmental destruction. Current ecological education fits within the prevalent economic structure of humanity. That is to say, value is generated by human production, or furthering the Anthropocene. Dominance will always lead to degradation of a natural environment, for it denotes a lack of equilibrium. Relinquishing our hold on the foreign resources necessary to uphold and sustain our alien lifestyles constitutes the only logical solution to ecological destruction. Dramatically different attitudes need to be adopted by the populous. Value must be derived from a vibrant, local ecosystem. Only by restricting our economic model and appetites can we see the only stable economic system which conceived us- Mother Nature.

The human race is doomed, but I probably will be long dead (I'm in my 8th decade and only got active as an environmentalist in my mid 20's and almost nothing has changed in the last 50 years of human unkind destroying mother earth.

Depends on what your reference point is. Are we too late to prevent massive shifts in climate patterns, environmental degradation, property destruction, economic collapse, millions of deaths due to records heatwaves and frosts, droughts and floods, etc., plus countless more due to the food and water shortages, mass migrations and armed conflict that will ensue? Yup, I'm afraid we are, even though we were warned decades ago, when it would have been not only possible, but fairly straightforward to stop this suicidal madness. Nonetheless, we still can avoid the complete annihilation of our species, and leave some hope for something resembling a tolerable, dignified life, if we act decisively and without wasting more time. Unfortunately, since the IPCC's first official report in 1990, we've already emitted more greenhouse gasses (which will take centuries to dissolve) than in all of human history before that. I hate being a negative Nancy, but our record so far does not inspire much confidence.

The crisis we don't hear as much about, biodiversity loss, will be/is our biggest threat. It will set into motion a devastating unraveling. This “little girl” has more knowledge and a better understanding of the environment and the importance of the environment for humanity as a whole, than most adults who refuse to read a book in order to obtain the facts which would inevitably lead to action being taken, as Greta is doing. Just because you can’t accept that our environment and ecosystems aren’t functioning properly due to a significant lack of knowledge and action from those in positions of power, doesn’t mean that it’s not happening, or that it isn’t real. While she's not my primary inspiration for what I'm doing I decided to pursue environmental engineering mainly because of what I've been hearing on the news and thinking "but I wonder if I could invent something that would help the environment" currently I'm still stuck at the chemical engineering phase of my journey but hopefully soon I will reach to that point. Solar power is CHEAPER and electric vehicles are soon to be CHEAPER to make and already are considerably CHEAPER to maintain and operate, especially if charged from your own solar power.
A 3-5 year ROI (return on investment) for a solar array that will generate power for decades is a no-brainer and the panels can even be made locally too.

@@tomizatko3138 I'm replying to the OP regarding electric powered airplanes, not the feasibility of all alternative power sources for all purposes. The biggest problem with electric cars today is the battery. If we're looking at environmental impact, the toxicity of the battery is worse than all the fumes a traditionally fueled car would create over its lifetime. Imagine the size of battery for airplanes. And, for public safety reasons, airplane parts are retired at a certain point. So it's not like a consumer being able to eke out value over the long term with a purchase, once the manufacturer validity period is over, that part - say, the battery - can no longer be used. To recycle it for component parts is toxic to the environment and any people who are involved in that recycling process. I agree that alternative fuel sources should be developed. But people and companies will continue to choose the cheapest product, especially due to the widening income gap leaving the 99% with ever-less purchasing power.

@@citogal Compared to any airplane with normal fuel the electric airplane produces less of the toxic substance, that effect less people in their whole lifespan. Compared to any other airplane that run on fossil fuels. You forget that an old engine of airplane and any place that the fuel is stored in is far more toxic than any battery. Sometimes they are so toxic that engine or a wing can t be recycled at all! And let s not talk about toxic fumes. The amount of toxic fumes electric airplanes generate is miniscule compared to amount off fumes normal airplanes put in the atmosphere! (If all airplanes were electric). Remember everyday there is 3tones of the most dangerous gas put in the atmosphere and than theres a less dangerous gas that is put in the atmosphere 1000x that amount. Which gas should you worry about?
Also batteries can work after their life in the airplane on solar farm or as energy stored for homes. Their are more profitable then any used engine or part of. Airplane.

A little calculation of the population situation on earth.
There are people who invoke the threat of an alleged "overpopulation". What is it?
Let's do the math in a slightly simplified way.
The world population is currently estimated at around 7.8 billion people. For simplicity, let's say 8 billion. In digits: 8,000,000,000
Now let's allocate 100 m2 of living space to every single person. From newborns to old people on their deathbeds, every person has 100 m2 of living space at their disposal throughout their life.
    8 billion people x 100 m2 of living space = 800 billion m2 of living space requirement
Let's see how much that is in km2:
    1 km2 = 1,000 m x 1,000 m = 1,000,000 m2
    Consequently: 800,000,000,000 m2: 1,000,000 = 800,000 km2
Now let's mentally distribute this living space over three-story residential buildings. No skyscrapers, just 3-story buildings.
    The following area would be required for this: 800,000 km2: 3 = 266,700 km2
Let's put this area in relation to the area of Germany in 2020: 357,582 km2
    357,582 km2 = 100%
    266,700 km2 = 74.58% of the area of Germany
    or 0.18% of the earth's mainland (149,430,000 km2)
    In other words:
If every single person were given 100 m2 of living space, and this living space were distributed over three-story houses, the entire current world population could easily be accommodated in almost ¾ of the area of Germany. Not recommended, but mathematically possible.
And there would still be plenty of space for parks, forests, gardens, paths, roads.
While the rest of the world would be deserted.
Is that what overpopulation looks like? How do you get a media-sensitive, self-indulgent humanity to look facts in the eye?
Do we really know nothing better than to make life difficult for each other? What can we realize when we stand together as humanity?

  • @joermnyc

If “big oil” is such a profitable industry, why do they need government subsidies? Other nations do just fine with more expensive gas/petrol, and it might make Americans rethink designing everything around cars (which have only been a thing for a little over a hundred years, before that we only had bicycles, trans, and horse drawn vehicles for local travel.)
