Everything that I have ever seen about "The Orville" describes it as a knockabout comedy parody of Star Trek. Yet here it is treated as THE most seriously po-faced space opera.
The first season was semi-comedic and was initially marketed as a completely farcical parody, but I think Seth just pitched it like that to get it approved by the network. He very quickly turned it into a completely straight scifi show. One episode dealt with the topic of suicide and was so deathly somber and serious that it outdid even the most grim episodes of Star Trek in terms of being thought-provoking and melancholy. There wasn't a single joke from start to finish. That episode was an outlier because they usually still throw in a little comic relief with the very talented and funny cast they have, but it's 100% a serious and legit scifi show. No, it is not as focused as that. It is a reference to a more general, arbitrary discrimination. On the planet referenced on this show, discrimination is related to "astrological signs". On Earth, we arbitrarily discriminate based on race, religion or.............etc. This story is a condemnation of our society's discrimination, without directly mentioning it. The Earth is continuously bombarded by cosmic rays from different parts of the galaxy and during different times of the year, the rays we receive vary. Now consider that radiation plays a critical role in DNA development. There could actualy be some truth to astroligical influences on personality.
Those rays also are affecting Earthquakes, Volcanic Activity (which is increasing annually, with quite a few which have been dormant for at least 1000 years now active, as well as Global Warming/Cooling, far more than the excess CH4, H2O (responsible for warming) C, CO, SO2 (responsible for poisoning the atmosphere) & CO2 (responsible for atmospheric cooling, cloud formation & extreme flooding rains within the Tropik boundaries or extreme snow storms north of the Tropik of Cancer & will increase to a lesser extent, a fair way south of the Tropik of Capricorn.
