Ray could recite the words of a Dr. Seuss book and make them sound like a church hymn. No single performer could sing and play blues, jazz, soul, gospel, country, and standards with such authority. His influence on popular music is pervasive, from Billy Preston to Billy Joel, Stevie Wonder to Steve Winwood, Aretha, Elton, Tom Waits, Joe Cocker, Leon Russell, Dr. John, Randy Newman, Van Morrison, Foy Vance, John Legend, Bruce Hornsby, Michael McDonald and countless others.

The thing that made him so great is that he was a master at an instrument, the piano as well as singing good. He didn't have disagreements with the band because he was the band. He inspired modern music more than what most people know. RIP Ray Charles.

And you better believe that Ray could wail on any keyboard that was ever made -- and he could play wind instruments, as well.

Saw a live performance by Ray Charles in Tivoli Gardens in August 1964. It was an experience that remains emblazoned in my memory as though it happened yesterday. Cant find any recording of it sadly

Every new artist that starts into music will never surpass Ray but coming second to this great man is in itself a great acchievment.

I mean... just to play this piece of slow blues on a rock‘n‘roll concert is legendary (literally). Everything from 4:00 until the end is just heartbreaking beautiful - a real bluesman!

    I know you told me
    Such a long time ago
    That you didn't want me
You didn't love me no more
    I wanna know
    Oh, what makes me be?
Do you believe me a child? I'm a fool for you
    Oh-oh, no, I'm a fool for you
    I know you told me
    You didn't want me 'round
    Yeah, and I know
You got a man way 'cross town
    So I know it's something
    Oh, what makes me be?
Do you believe me a child? I'm a fool for you
    Oh-oh, I'm a fool for you
Did ya ever wake up in the morning?
Just about the break of day
Reach over and feel the pillow
Where your baby used to lay
Then you put on your crying
    Like you never cried before
    Oh Lord
Yeah, you even cry so loud
You give the blues to your neighbor next door
Ever since you were five years old, baby
I been a fool for you, little girl
    Way down in my soul
I'm a little fool for ya
    So I know it's something
    Oh, oh, Lord, yeah
    I'm a fool for you
