    I absolutely loved Tom Sturridge's micro expressions--he's so good at giving you a character that's aloof, but at the same time his expressions mean so much MORE that way, a little lift of an eyebrow is almost like a shout in his talented hands (or facial muscles, lol?) Mason Alexander Park totally sells Desire, fits so well and that VOICE, wow.

      I have NO idea how, without seeming to change expression at all, he can show SO damned much emotion. It’s truly mind-blowing.
      That moment when Constantine talks with him about what Roderick Burgess did to him…..he doesn’t move a muscle, but somehow his whole entire face crumples in on itself before he gets himself back under control.
      And when he confronts the monster raping Calliope, the RAGE and contempt on his face, with just a twitch of the jaw and the way his voice darkens.
      He’s truly remarkable, and I adore Tom ridiculously.

    The last few reactions to this I've watched have been from folks who knew nothing about Sandman, and as much fun as it is spending 10 minutes watching them try to figure out who Dream's sister is, watching a fan react is a different kind of joy.

    this is a prime example of the writers of the show not being prideful and trying to mess with something that is already amazingly written.

    • @Cinema_Sitdown

      Couldn’t agree more Arthera! It’s very obvious all the writers involved are super connected to this material and using the comic dialogue has just been beautiful!

      Example of the latter being The Witcher perhaps?

    I think what most people miss in changes for telling stories in comics or books then going to motion pictures or TV is the intent of the story. Gaiman said himself that the creation of Death when he wrote the comic was to give you something completely different. Thus a cute, pale, goth girl. When he was putting the show together over the years he wanted to keep that spirit of something different and unexpected. Also he is really into the aspect of these characters are in the viewers point of view not anything that he personally wants to see. So honestly with Gaiman you have to just embrace what he puts on screen verses what is illustrated in what he writes. Gaiman is all about the story to tell. Death was perfect both in the comic and the show.

      Completely agree Nick Kelly and it’s why I’m so happy they’ve stuck so true to form with the story telling. Then getting to see the adds and tweaks only enhance the material for the screen it’s perfection.

    Appreciate your attention to detail, throwing up matching comic panels in the editing.
    The tendency of street vendors to just give Death things for free is right out of her "The High Cost of Living" comic one-shot.
    I like your description of this episode as a "palette cleanser," that's exactly how I thought of it too. A bit of a breather after the horror intensity that was "24/7". Both in the comics and the show, the "Preludes & Nocturnes" arc is very linear - Dream has to do this thing, then that thing, and then the next thing, one after another. When he checks off the last thing on his list, the arc is done. We'll see how "The Doll's House" feels as adapted. Its arc is plotted more like a... well, like a vortex, to be honest. Everything and everyone involved gets introduced, and then they gradually all swirl closer and closer and closer together until the climax.
    I doubt if they could get the entire run done in 2 seasons. There are 10 collected volumes, and this season they only got through 2 of them. So it should take 5 seasons total, which I'd love to see.
    Gaiman has said that he and the producer would often try to re-write a scene or re-plot something, get stuck and then go "let's just go with what's on the page, that's better than what we came up with."

      El Bruce thanks so much for this wonderful comic, I’m definitely going to need to read The High Coat of Living and love that add to their walk! It’s very encouraging that we are getting season two, I feel like he’ll follow the Audible format of two collected volumes per act, so I’m expecting season of mists and a game of you in some form.
      I honestly hope Gaiman gets to finish both his audible run and this Netflix series run as both forms are just so damn good.

    I recently read this story and I love the entire show, it’s a masterpiece of adaptation. Only thing is that, by missing the 1989 appointment with Hob Gadling, we were deprived of seeing Morpheus with an 80’s mullet😂😂😂!

    I really appreciate your reactions to this show. Many other fun and interesting reactors also have background with the comics. Yours though for some reason are especially interesting and educational. I was not familiar wi Kirby Howell Baptiste. There are so many great actors in the show. She towers over most of them. I can well imagine she had few serious competitors for the role. Was Death in the book as earthy and soulful? Looking at your comic illustration clips, seems to me she’s a dead ringer for Death. Who cares which crayon Trixie uses.

      Thanks so much My name is no one’s business! I very badly hope to continue with the last 4 episodes unfortunately those records are on a hard drive that crashed. A family friend has recovered a chunk of the drive so I’ll find out Tuesday or Wednesday if they were saved. If not I’ll rewatch and just breakdown for you guys for sure. This series means the world to me so definitely not one I plan leaving unfinished.

    35:08 Yeah I never really understood that particular complaint. Maybe it's just my theater background but I was like, oh it's just an economical use of actors that's brilliant. it's like having the same actor play Claudius and Hamlet sr. That way you get more time on stage/screen for the actor and you don't have to pay two separate people lol.

    C-Man, Time to upgrade to an SSD external working drive🤣. Kirby does a solid job portraying her character but I always read Death as a young adult American goth girl. Of course this character fits more within the late 1980's when that style was a trend than it would in 2022 but somehow Kirby made it work so well while being a more mature version of this character. The Hob Gadling storyline also works so well within this episode since the themes of both stories plays off with each other for contrasting reasons. It's strange now to see how these stories are connected in contrast to the books.

      Hey @gengen0302 thanks so much for the kind words on the eps I did post. I had the entire season recorded and while I was working on the edits my external hard drive crashed and I lost all of them. I very badly want to re-record them but those edits take me a long time. I’m hoping to take a week off before summer is over to get the reshot just so the analysis is up, but regardless my goal is to come back to them ahead of season 2. My schedule has just sucked personally since it first dropped.

    technically they could have redone the appointments to have linked up to modern year, but they chose not to for some reason.

    • @elbruces
      @elbruces ปีที่แล้ว

      I guess they could have started in 1422 instead of 1389 and gone once per century from there, but they need to get Will Shakespeare while he's young and just starting out as a playwright, so that wouldn't have lined up.

    • @riopato2009
      @riopato2009 ปีที่แล้ว

      Keeping it the same timeline makes the differences relatively a nonissue when considering the amount of timespan the story is told. Being 33 years late for the appointment is inconsequential considering it's a story that's over 600 years. Point being, no matter how things change, some things about being human doesn't and you can hear it in the background conversations.
