    You want to integrate your hardware synth with Ableton Live? In this tutorial you'll learn how to set up audio and MIDI connection from your synth to Ableton and how to record and trigger your synth via MIDI. I use the External Instrument device, which is really easy to set up and use.
    In the video I use the Novation Bass Station II but it doesn't matter what synth you have, you can still connect it pretty much the same way.

    Haha... I just connected my Bass Station II and was wondering about the MIDI, and here you are, with this video! Thanks!
    I also found in Ableton 10 I didn't need to setup an external instrument, I could just set the MIDI input/output in the channel and it worked too.

      Glad the video was helpful! Sure, you can do it this way but you’ll need to setup a separate audio track to hear/record the audio.

    Might be a noob question, but based on this video you can use bass station (or any hardware synth) as a midi controller for any software instrument? So there's no need for a separate midi controller?

    If you wanted to to stream as well - would you use Voicemeeter as the input/output devices or stick with Komplete (or Scarlett, etc)?

    • @LowHeatBeats
      @LowHeatBeats  ปีที่แล้ว

      Unless your audio interface has loopback, you’ll need to use something to route your DAW audio to your streaming software.

    Excellent mate, cheers. But I don't see why I need to turn BS2 Local off. I am not getting any doubling. What am I missing?

    • @LowHeatBeats
      @LowHeatBeats  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you! Depending on the sounds that you’re playing and the latency of your audio interface the doubling may not be audible but it’s good to know how to fix it if you have this problem. If you don’t turn it off, every time you play a note, you’re sending the MIDI to the synth twice.

  • @syr1964

    How do you get the midi to trigger the arpeggiator on the bass station? It is turned on on the bass station but the midi only triggers one note instead of the arepgiator's pattern.

    • @LowHeatBeats
      @LowHeatBeats  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hmm I don't quite remember tbh, as the video is from 2018. Did I use the arpeggiator in the video? I skimmed through it and couldn't find that part.

    • @LowHeatBeats
      @LowHeatBeats  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Nice! Well, they are both cool but are totally different beasts. Ultranova is much more verstile but the Bass Station is better for juicy, grungy basses.

    Great video, but for some reason, I can't hear my recordings? I hear my BS2 when I play it in the Audio track, and I hear when I record it, but when I play back the recording I can't hear it even though I see the sound waves. There must be something that I'm missing. I'm using Ableton Live Lite btw, am I limited with that, for example, there's no external instrument option for the midi channel.

    • @LowHeatBeats
      @LowHeatBeats  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Maybe you haven't enabled monitoring on the audio track?

    Hey man nice video. But I have one question. When I connect my Bass Station 2 to the Audio Interface and use the 1/4 inch cable I can only receive/record mono sound (becasue the audio output from the Bass Station is als mono). How to you get it stereo in Ableton?

    • @LowHeatBeats

      Thanks man. I'm not sure what you mean by make it stereo. Do you mean how to get it to sound in both speakers?

    Thanks for info about doubleling. Really helpful! Also :can you record to ableton midi track all changes made on BS2 to midi? While recording on clip? Like cutoff or other params?

    • @LowHeatBeats

      Yeah, if you set up the midi like I did in the video it will also record the knob movements. Thanks for watching!

      Low Heat Beats Hi, I found the video very helpful thanks man. Only question I have is when I connected it as you said to record to midi, when I press a key on the bass station it plays a double note? If you understand my problem or how to fix it I’d really appreciate your advice! Thanks

    By the same principle, I use the iPad with ios synthesizers, but I get output latency. How to get rid of it? Unable to use the tool in real time

    • @LowHeatBeats
      @LowHeatBeats  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      You should be able to lower the buffer size for your iPad apps to decrease the latency. However I’ve noticed that, with older iPads and with some apps, you may not be able to achieve really low latency.

    • @habasoundprod
      @habasoundprod 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Low Heat Beats I have an iPad Pro 2017, I connect to the MacBook Pro 13 (2017) just like in the video. I turn on Ableton Link, in Ableton settings the buffer size decreases, but there is no result. Already tried everything.

    • @LowHeatBeats
      @LowHeatBeats  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well, even if it’s a newer iPad (I’ve got the same one as yours), I’ve noticed the latency on iPad apps is higher than desktop DAWs. I’ve tried to to use it as an external sound module through the lightning cable and it was alright in terms of latency, but not great.

    Noob question: I hear two instances of the synth. One is being routed through ableton, the other is running through my computer. Once I play on ableton I can hear the phasing. This is because both are playing at once. What can I do?

    • @arielsantos7162
      @arielsantos7162 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think the issue here was that I had direct monitoring on in my interface

    • @LowHeatBeats
      @LowHeatBeats  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yup, it’s the direct monitor that’s causing this.

      Low Heat Beats hi, only problem I now have is that I’m using headphones to produce which are connected to my Scarlett audio interface so when I switch local off on the bass station 2 I can no longer hear it playing in my headphones. Any idea how I need to connect so I can hear it still but avoid the doubling? Thanks

    • @LowHeatBeats
      @LowHeatBeats  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I’m not sure man. Local off shouldn’t affect whether you hear it in the hadphones or not. Only thing I can think of is: Make sure you’re not using direct monitor on your Scarlett. Turn it off because it will definitely cause doubling.
