- Enrique ( @RickyTinez ) from Novation ( @NovationTV ) stopped by our studio to show us 3 of his favorite tips with the Bass Station 2, and since the limited edition AFX Station comes out today (10.20.2020) we used one for the video. You can put the firmware with these features on any Bass Station 2, but this special edition has a purple bottom, Aphex Twin logo and graphics by Weirdcore.

gary mackenzie I personally would take a AFX Circuit Monostation, the randomness combined with the grid layout lends itself to *interesting* possibilities.

the purple bottom is the main feature, no doubt!
The purple bottom adds some sick bottom end.
And probably matching purple USB cable and MIDI converter plugs

@@PerfectCircuit Yes it would! Imagine the workflow of the Circuit with the sound of the Bass Station II!!! I bet they can make it for $200-$300 to compete with the Roland TR-6S, Model:Samples, Model:Cycles and Drumbrute/Drumbrute Impact.

Nice one Ricky, so glad I picked up a Bass Station 2 on Friday, it's already made a huge difference and now it's even more of a monster!
This is an excellent tutorial, even for experienced BS II users.
I've wanted one of these for a while; so many clever new additions that I'm surprised more synth makers haven't introduced already
I've had quite a few synths over the years and a ton of modular but the BS2 is one of the top 5 sounding synths ever imo.

Your circulation is pretty good. The quickness in which the pinkness returned to your left forefinger upon releasing the held keys was quite snappy. Subscribed, and then liked!

I don’t have a BS2. Looking at specs it seems to me they added more then a paint job, or I’m I missing something?
@@messer21 paint job and a few sub oscilator chnages. But pretty much the same thing :/
@@messer21 All the new features were added an year ago through firmware updates, the new model is just a reskin. With this launch they added overlay managing through novation componenets and the possibility to copy one sound from one key to the other. Everything available to every BSII user. It's a very powerful synth and novation gave these updates free for everyone and THEN dropped the reskin; the best costumer friendly way to do it if you ask me.

Can't say I've seen glide divergence on any other synth, that could make some interesting 303 type sequences.
It's a feature on the Pro 3, but yeah, it's pretty uncommon. (glide rate there is per-oscillator)

Those are very cool features and a very nice explanation but it would have been more normal to simply have a semi-modular Bass Station 3 with the possibility of live recording sequences, reverb, analog delay, and some modular connections on the front panel. That would be a worthy upgrade and compete with Moog Grandmother and Arturia.

Differences respect to the Circuit Mono Station? Also in CMS is possible to isolate both oscillators.

Are the aftertouch action not that stiff (especially on the black keys) compared to the older BS2?
I wish they had improved the sequencer so that it plays back exactly what you play into it without messing with the legato and rest buttons. Maybe at a metronome so you can play in real time to a beat and the sequencer plays back exactly what you play, in the exact timing etc.

I like it, I just prefer the original design...it would be nice to get one with the original design but with the new functions printed on the case.
I have the Bass Station 2 and like it, but really don't use it much. I can see this version being utilized a lot more as an inspiration machine.

@@paul_burney I actually have never updated my BS2 (about 2 years) and was VERY pleasantly surprised to find out this is all in the updates.
Say you have a midi input that is sequencing notes on this afx station. If you have drum notes asigned to the keys (notes) that are being sequenced will they play as you have a signed them?
Yep, just like of a drum machine were sequenced.

Sooooo, what’s the difference between this and a regular firmware-updated BS2??
They are the same synth, the only difference on this version is cosmetic.
I bought my bass station 2 off the shelf at guitar center and i tried to register it on their site so i can download firmware updates but i cant because my box didn't have the code in it to register it. I keep trying to contact Novation through customer service and i'm getting no replies at all and its been months. any advice on what to do?
Just sign up for an account and go to components.novationmusic.com and plug your BSII into your computer. I don't recall anything about a code in the box. I don't think you need to register it to get the drivers.
The price seems reasonable enough for a nice piece of hardware.
All of these features are available on the regular bs2 as well. You can find those for dirt cheap. All you miss out on are the funky graphics and purple bottom.

Ordered my AFX Station last evening... although it's true that I could've saved about 100€ and get the resular BSII and update to 4.15 manually.
Oh, and didn't know Ricky worked at Novation! Loyal subscriber here, as am sure many others are :D

Does anyone make a sticker with all the new function key functions printed on it that I could put over the function descriptions on my regular BS2? I find myself forgetting to try that stuff since they aren't printed and the BS2 display is pretty limited!
Someone on Elektronauts was talking about getting some made and selling them on Reverb
I went ahead and tried to make my own. Anyone feel like checking this for errors? @@DavidIsbister looks really good to me! no typos and it lines up well enough. The very right hand bracket on the line might not be needed, it's about 3mm short on a test printout here. I'm sure you can get them much cheaper than $100. Here in the UK I can find people on ebay offering custom digital printed stickers $20 for as many will fit on 1300mm x 700mm. I reckon you could easily get 150 on there

Does it have midi over usb, and is there an editor?
It has USB midi and it comes with librarian software to manage patches. There are some 3rd party editors out there.

... this is basically just a re-packaged BSII with the 4.14FW (engine) - which I've already got. Anyone confirm if I am correct here, looking also on Novation's website spec.'s. So, only leaves me with the one question: do I want an Aphex Twin version of what I have at the mo' with the funky purple bottom, for a premium $ ?? Hmmmm. Maybe a GAS collector's heaven.
This one is the same synth as the regular, just special graphics and purple bottom, but it is also the same price as the regular one.

This would not be possible with a software update. They need to ad a second filter and VCA for that.
