How strong are Fischer light duty plasterboard fixings?

  • Want to know how strong drywall fixings are? My 'go to' wall plug for very lightweight items in plasterboard are these little Fischer GP drywall fixings. They're only recommended for loads up to 2kg but I wanted to see what they can actually withstand. In this Test Tuesday video I'm going to test for axial and shear loads to see if there's much difference. There are LOADS of lightweight fixings out there - these ones are great for pictures, light mirrors etc.

    I was planning to use these for a speaker bracket but was worried they would not hold. The speaker weights 4Kg and after seeing this I feel confident that the bracket with 4 of these fittings will be just fine. Thank for you for the great and informative video.

      Already when you bought/rented it? Or during/just before moving in?
      I know some people who have dry walls in front of their (kind of) brick (outer) walls which were very uneven.
      To make it stronger, they put at first a layer of OSB and after that the "real" dry walls (gypsum board)

    To be fair, the fastener and anchor combo did not fail. The substrate material ‘drywall’ yielded as one would expect. However, your test numbers in both axial and shear force yields should be consistent within a range of anchors of this diameter. I am curious if other brand anchor testing vids reveals this. Larger diameter anchors should spread the load out, maybe ? Since drywall is so common, and people hang the weirdest stuff from their walls, a fun destructive test would be how much could one actually hang from a wall using anchors commonly available, regardless of diameter. Maybe test best method or pattern vs quantity etc, ( without stud penetration). I’m sounding crazy, but destructive testing is a great topic and your series appears very popular. Thanks for your effort on the videos, great material. New subscriber. Safe New Year to you !

    Maybe you could try the plastic self drilling plasterboard and see how they hold up, in my experience they hold a lot more than the grey plugs. The ones they sell in Poundland are basically holding everything up in my house. I put a swinging TV bracket up with them and you can literally hang on it when it's swung out. But then again, it depends on what thickness of plasterboard you have, 12.5mm is a hell of a lot stronger than the 9.5m plasterboard

      The ones I meant seem to be discontinued. They used to be sold both as fischer and in kits with ELFA/Sparring wardrobe fittings. I think the current style is the Fischer PD 8-12. Ages ago when I worked in a DIY store they used to be colot coded blue and red for 10 and 12 and behaved roughly like the metal anchors but no special tools required. These days most new houses here in sweden will have OSB or construction plywood behind the plaster board though so plugs and anchors are not as much of an issue.

  • @Bushcraft-xz6xd
    @Bushcraft-xz6xd 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Omg this test is awful!!!! Why have you included a test jig that supports the plasterboard 50mm ish around the fixing? Try the test in real world situations where you have just 400mm of drywall or plasterboard to support your load between joists.

    Would it be correct in thinking that if one can withstand say 20kg. Then if you were mounting a TV and you had 4 or 6 of these plugs that each one plug is only supporting 5kg or 3kgs and a bit?

    • @GosforthHandyman
      @GosforthHandyman  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes BUT never go by the peak load - you must always cater for a safety factor - normally 3-4 times smaller at least. Always go by the manufacturer recommended ratings - I think for these it's 5kg per fixing, so I wouldn't use these for a TV.

    • @jimmyking1205
      @jimmyking1205 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@GosforthHandyman what sort would you recommend I watched your vid with the corefix ones but where my TV would go there wouldn't be any brick work behind. It's backed by the stair case? It's a new build so can't even check for studs ect just yet... Help needed 👍🏼

    • @GosforthHandyman
      @GosforthHandyman  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Jimmy - I really can't advise without seeing it in person. For a 20kg on a flat-to-wall bracket I'd probably use expanding metal anchors on a hollow wall but if it's a cantilever bracket you'd need to hit the studs. 👍

    Now we know what the weight may be on a single plug. But say you use 6 to 9 plugs to hang a shelf and place a heavy object like an old tv or microwave,or something over 15/20kg. I wonder if it would eventually pull out over time. In a real world application many of these would be used to hang a heavy object,distributing the pull weight on many plugs.

    • @GosforthHandyman
      @GosforthHandyman  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      You would definitely NOT use these little plugs for heavy stuff like that. See other vids e.g. expanding metal anchors. 👍

    I wonder if some of the pull out was due to the screw not being fully threaded? Would be good to see it done with a fully threaded screw. It would be also be interesting if having a screw with a more defined thread would make a difference, maybe a turbo gold, I guess you’ve used a silver screw there. Great channel, keep up the good work.

      Could well be - d'oh! I'm so used to using those screws for putting battening up I didn't even look - my bad! Turbogold are a bit aggressive to use in plugs IMHO since the serrated shank removes a fair bit of the plastic. They work but I prefer Quicksilver / Silver / Goldscrews for plugs if poss. A suggestion for a test would be to see if there is much difference if someone was to fit them wrong. Say someone forced them into a 5mm hole or into a 7mm hole. The type of thing a rookie DIYer would do and think it was fine cos it worked once :)
