Just a cautionary note. a few times I noticed the colours from my clothing bled in the washing machine. Then I found the cause, it was whenever I had used window cleaner and had tossed the rag into the wash... even if the rag had been rinsed out beforehand.

I think some like Invisible glass use alcohol. I can't find what the actual ingredients are but they say contains no ammonia and it smells like rubbing alcohol. I also think there is spray away glass cleaner that claims to be ammonia free.
Since you can manually move it with the arrows to retrieve it. Can't you just use the arrows to clean the window instead? I know it takes away the automation of it. But at least for those hard to reach windows you can clean them.

We used to sell those at my Fry's. I had fun building a display for it. Bought a surplus sliding glass door & some hardware & affixed it to an endcap. I was amazed at what a good job it did of cleaning. I was also amazed at how many people bought them thinking the thing would scale their walls and do all their windows... Okay, it was like 2, but that was 2 more than I ever would have imagined.
It took me a few minutes before I realised: "...not entirely compatible with windows" meant REAL windows and not Microsoft Windows! I was waiting for something about Windows drivers or such. D'oh! ^__^
Do you guys realize that it takes longer to set the damn thing up than actually manually cleaning the windows yourself?! And lets not even talking about not being perfect.... wowwwza!
This would save me a LOT of effort at work. Earlier today, I spent an hour cleaning windows, only to do a merely almost-passable job. This might work better and it can get into those tight spaces that are blocked by merchandise, claw machines, and the like. I'll have to keep it in mind.
a visit to the site makes it clear these are actually intended for apartment and studio windows, large windows that can't be opened, the outside of these windows are usually cleaned by someone paid by the owner of the building but often you're responsible for the inside, and just like the roomba they're intended to save you time by performing a small, simple, but time consuming task so that you don't have to i also find odd you mention carpeting for the roomba because most robot vacuums are best on and designed for hard floors rather than carpeted floors, for example an unsealed wood floor which might warp if it were mopped regularly

Mine arrived today and I put it to work straight away. Thankfully, it worked really well on all my hard to reach windows apart from one. I used the manual navigation to clean that window which was an acceptable compromise for me to get the job done. Thanks for the review.
Thanks for saving me £100. I was almost tempted until I saw the problem you had with your windows as mine also have a slope that will probably confuse the robot.
I know you say in the description that it does nothing if the power is disconnected but did you try whilst it was mid-clean? It might be that it is to keep it running if the power fails but only if it's already on a window.
ö. . , the short answer is because it's a more "traditional" design. why do Americans use Imperial measures...it's how they did 100 years ago so is what they do now...Same with British windows. the long answer is that when building/refurbishing a house for the purpose of then selling it "they" spend as little as possible on everything (a window you can open costs more than one you can't) due to the fact that house prices are mostly based on location and size. If you buy a period propriety you can expect the wooden window frames to be painted shut as "they" never bothered opening them while painting... for the last 20 years...this is again... traditional...weird...
ö. . , your strange, just because one guy has a window that he can't open doesn't mean that the rest of the country has them too, I have windows on my house that I can open and clean whilst standing inside, I'm of course very special and not like the rest of the scum in this country that has to go outside and wipe them
I believe that this model of Ecovacs window cleaning robot has a firmware update where you can calibrate the sensors. Although, this device being an older model the software I found for it was only compatible with Windows 98, 2000, and XP. Because of that I had trouble installing the drivers on my modern Windows 10 PC. I guess you could say that this Window Cleaning Robot is not entirely compatible with all Windows.
Impressed. Didn't realize this was going to work as well as it seems to. If you have a peel and stick Veneer Strip/"bumper strip" that you can install like a Picture Frame around the outer edge of the Cleaner... Seems like the best chance. Maybe the New Model(s) have an adjustable edge?
You could always take it apart and disable the corner sensors. If they are normally open switches, isolate the leads. If they are normally closed, bridge them. Job Done
As for your window problems, you could try instead of taping the sensors down , puttiting some sort of shim/extension on the sensors just to make them have more range of travel before they lose contact. Or, larger bumpers.
A very late answer, but if you still own it, then it could be worth a try. It seems as the "fall sensors" just is circuit breakers, when they get the power disconnected, the robot believe it is falling and get that red light. It would maybe be possible to open it up, connect the wires that go to the circuit breakers and make it believe it has attachment to a window all the time. The batteries are used for the case that if the power cable came loose while cleaning it may fall immediately. The instruction didn't translate well into other language, but they are very detailed in Chinese...
a bit of a late reply, and maybe no longer relevant, however I would indeed mount some sort of rubber (sticky) bumper on the edge of the robot that is cut to the same angle as the one on your window, but then reverse (e.g. window edge |/ meets robot bumper edge /| ) this will then create again a straight surface for the robot to 'bump' off.
how about you superglue those switches. in that way even if they hit edge they will not trigger so device will continue to vacuum. pushing it all 4 down gave you error because it thinks he is hitting edges on all 4. just glue them as they are on device it will work
The switches are to let it know its about to lose suction. Without the buttons, it will just drive off the window, so it would convert it into a bungee jumping robot. The solution would be to square frame the bottom and top of the window, and not have a sloping frame, or a robot that has a completely different means of detecting the window area. Perhaps you could put a skirt on at 45 degrees, as that would fight the slope of the frame.
I thought that too but as Richard said as soon as it gets to the 45 degree sill it'll keep driving and fall off. It needs a firmware update to tell it to change direction when the buttons are pushed instead of posting an error.
Should return that one for the next version on the list to see if they fixed the problems you were having. Might be worth it since it worked well enough when it did work.
would this work on a conservatory roof? Even if I had to clamp a bit of wood at the bottom to stop if falling off it would be a lot easier than a squeegee on a stick. I'm sure I'll fall through the flimsy polycarbonate one day when I put my hand in the wrong place.
ganymedeIV4 You realize Apple does the *least* data-mining of all the big tech companies? They make their money on the devices; Google makes it money on ads. Apple's track record on user privacy is pretty much the gold standard.
Got it! -instead of trying to adapt the machine to accept your window, you need to fabricate a shim which squares up your window frame. For example, my appartment has sliding windows which are silly dangerous to clean on the outside, given I'm 15 floors up and they're flush with the facade. If I were to get one of these robots (and I will), I'll just cut some foam to fill up the tracks the windows run in and stop it from disengaging.
maybe the "N" mode is for windows that are higher vertically and the "Z" mode is for windows that are wider then they are tall. on the first window it was hitting the edge of the window nice and square, where as on the second it hit the edge of the window with only one corner, in the middle of it's maneuver to move over.
You are honestly one of the best channels I've ever seen. Is good to see a fellow English chap reviewing things I could be interested in. Good Luck in the future mate!
Shopping channels used to have a thing with magnets, you put one on the outside and one on the inside and the magnets held them together so when you moved the one on the inside the outside one would do the same. No idea if it actually worked though.
I think that if you added some L shaped brackets to the corners, to act as bumpers, it would prevent the wedge corner from getting under the bot and releasing the pressure on the drop sensors. The l brackets would wrap just the corners, acting as a lower hanging bumper to hit the window edge at at a more perpendicular point.
I'm guessing that the sensors react to being pressed down, so when it encounters an edge the buttons are pressed, or how? The reverse would mean that they are always in contact with the window - and that sounds - risky. If it's this way, you could just cut down the buttons or replace them with something different that doesn't supress the springs - I'm guessing?
Thank you for the timely review. This is one gadget that my angled window edges won't be getting. I wonder if the later models have had this issues fixed.
Haha when he started talking i really was confused why there should be unaccesable windows. Strange to me why somebody should build windows which can't open :D
About those corner switches: it seems that they dont get activated at all when working on a window without slopes. If they are just that "stupid" press variety switches with two contacts you could just open the device and cut their wires. Or glue them in place so they dont ever get pressed in. Though losing their function might be a bad thing... Im interested to see if there is a solution!
I think those corner sensors need to be longer, so that they activate before the robot overshoots the edge. infra red might have worked better, but added to the cost!
But how would this device clean the window above that one, the one that hinges outward? If you have to get on the roof to do that one, you might as well do the other one manually as well.
Obviously the angle on the outside of many windows is one think they didn't take into account by perhaps incorporating an infrared sensor to correspond with it. Great video though mate
In the US. BUT LOVE your channel. Just found it. late 2019 for reference to readers in the future. Many older homes here have glazed windows. It wouldn't work on those either. Only modern designs. And that is a major flaw for sales across too many places. It needs antennae or whiskers basically. So it can tell where the window frame is vs. the window face.
Thank you. I found this interesting and timely. Please don't be discouraged by some of the goofy responses. Your videos are always helpful, and there are a lot of us who appreciate the detail, and thus the time and effort you put into creating them.
It seems to me like the corner sensors might just need to be padded out a bit since they're not making contact with the pane. Maybe with some of the little plastic feet or some hot glue or something?
This would sort of work with my windows but I'd have to take it outside to put it on my Apartment windows, I wonder if it handles very large windows. Also I imagine it has an internal battery just incase theres a power out or the power gets unplugged and allows it to keep it self on the window long enough for you to hopefully get to it in time before it falls off.
Good video, but I'm confused as to why someone would think taping the bumper sensors against the machine would help. Doesn't that manually activate the window sensor in the same way as if it had encountered a window slope? I should think that if something like this was tried, it would be the opposite: to get the bumper sensor to stand off the machine, not taped back against it.
Did you ever get this machine to work properly on the slanted window frames? If not perhaps the solution would be to fabricate a ring to go around the devices outer edge that has the same slant as your window frames. Perhaps some sheet aluminum bent to the angle of the window wrapped around the outer edge would solve the issue. It seems it’s hitting that edge and lifting. Anyhow thanks for all the great content. I especially love the retro tech.

It needs a firmware update to tell it to change direction when the buttons are pushed instead of posting an error.
apparently the newer model 930 has moved the drop sensors away from the corners inwards, maybe that would have worked better for your type of windows.
I love all the cute little jokes sprinkled in.
Should return that one for the next version on the list to see if they fixed the problems you were having. Might be worth it since it worked well enough when it did work.
This is the ultimate example of technological excess that is made obsolete by basic non-electric means.
1:13 awesome view from window, just like in Lynch's Erasehead
Right. Definitely a toy for blokes, the missus would have none of that.
That's the first time I've ever seen a window cleaning robot. As always please keep up the good work.
more weird gadgets reviews, plz.
I haven't even watched this video yet, but you're getting a thumbs up for the title alone :)
Hey buddy. You could just use magnets to clean the outside if your window
Will G he’s not reviewing magnets, he’s reviewing this window cleaner.
would this work on a conservatory roof? Even if I had to clamp a bit of wood at the bottom to stop if falling off it would be a lot easier than a squeegee on a stick. I'm sure I'll fall through the flimsy polycarbonate one day when I put my hand in the wrong place.
Does this work with Apple?
I'd imagine this device would have a difficult time cleaning an apple.
ganymedeIV4 You realize Apple does the *least* data-mining of all the big tech companies? They make their money on the devices; Google makes it money on ads. Apple's track record on user privacy is pretty much the gold standard.
apple crumple yes if you want the crumbles gone
Microsoft better patch Windows to fix this issue.
Or just upgrade to linux
maybe the "N" mode is for windows that are higher vertically and the "Z" mode is for windows that are wider then they are tall.
on the first window it was hitting the edge of the window nice and square, where as on the second it hit the edge of the window with only one corner, in the middle of it's maneuver to move over.
But will it clean Windows 10?
I think techmoan has x64 bits upstairs, so i think x32 only.
You are honestly one of the best channels I've ever seen. Is good to see a fellow English chap reviewing things I could be interested in. Good Luck in the future mate!
It cleans windows by uninstalling it and installing linux instead
But alas, the penguin is being a dick to non-casual game developers.
Shopping channels used to have a thing with magnets, you put one on the outside and one on the inside and the magnets held them together so when you moved the one on the inside the outside one would do the same. No idea if it actually worked though.
You could set 15 or 20 of these outside an office building and charge a killing cleaning commercial windows
I think that if you added some L shaped brackets to the corners, to act as bumpers, it would prevent the wedge corner from getting under the bot and releasing the pressure on the drop sensors. The l brackets would wrap just the corners, acting as a lower hanging bumper to hit the window edge at at a more perpendicular point.
hey, this bot is very well programmed.
I got a robot vacuum cleaner but it just sits there gathering dust.
More importantly, how do you clean the little hatch window you use to put the machine on the larger window?
These robotic contraptions are such garbage! If you want anything done right, you've gotta do it yourself.
I've noticed that you've found and bought the silver HP-01 you always wanted. Congratulations :)
Hey Mr. Techmoan, I thought you were going to do a vid on your intro whirla-majig 😯
Check Techmoan.com
For some reason, TH-cam keeps recommending this video again and again.. but by now I'm seriously considering getting one for my attic windows.
This is why I used Linux for my last home renovation...
"Windows? But isn't he a Mac-user?"
I think those corner sensors need to be longer, so that they activate before the robot overshoots the edge.
infra red might have worked better, but added to the cost!
someone makes a stick-on bumper adapter for these, eBay/Amazon that sht !!! get some new kicks, twist that up!
Why do you call it 'mains' power? Is that some kind of regional nickname for house hold power or 220 VAC?
Surely all windows are glazed? Otherwise they're just a gaping hole in the side of your house.
Did you try the Z cleaning option on the incompatible windows?
The second version might exist for the exact issue you had. If you come across the newer one cheap maybe a follow up video is in order?
Did you ever get this machine to work properly on the slanted window frames? If not perhaps the solution would be to fabricate a ring to go around the devices outer edge that has the same slant as your window frames. Perhaps some sheet aluminum bent to the angle of the window wrapped around the outer edge would solve the issue. It seems it’s hitting that edge and lifting. Anyhow thanks for all the great content. I especially love the retro tech.
