I read The Bell Jar when I was 19 after being hospitalized after trying to die. I was also diagnosed with bipolar disorder and recommended the book in the hospital. I read it three times in a year and felt it so deeply. It made me so hopeful and motivated to get better. About a year and a half after reading it i went to the library to find more of her work and i was talking to the libarian and asked was she still writing. She then told me how Sylvia ended her life and.... I have never been able to get over that feeling. She couldnt get out of the bell jar and eventually it suffocated her like a flame. I havent gotten out of the bell jar myself. I dont think you can with bipolar disorder. You have to live for the moments that the jar is lifted and some air rushes in but you know that it will fall again.

Great review, Juan. I read this book a couple of years ago and while I didn’t enjoy it at the beginning, I ended up loving it. As a person with mental health problems myself, I felt horrified by how these illnesses were treated at the time and the poor help Esther/Sylvia received. Definitely a must read! Btw, the title of the book is, in my opinion, very descriptive of what someone with mental health problems feels…

I read this when I was a young teenager and it was a very powerful read. I’ve heard great things about the new biography of Sylvia Plath called Red Comet. Deb

So what exactly is your take on this? You give biographical details of the author, after which you give a spoiler alert for people who didn’t read it - only to continue with retelling the synopsis for people who DID read it. Why? The review is not what happened in the book, or at least not for the most part. The only “review” part I see here is perhaps three-four last sentences; try to give more of your personal perspective in the future.
