Hi Mike. LOVE the videos. I have a 280sl 76 here in Australia which has slowly declined but is still in ok nic. Inspired me to start doing some jobs on it. Please keep these vids coming. Cheers
Thanks for you comment. My first ever car was a 1976 280SL and I still have it....a bit rusty in places but still going strong. We normally go out to Oz for a few months each year but in these crazy times who knows when our next trip will be. Our Toyota Hiace will have probably rusted away by the time we get back out. Mike
Yes...now that the car moves, I can get on and put the door cards on...and take one last look at the refurb of the window and door mechanism before it disappears never to be seen again. Mike
Unless i'm missing something (and maybe you mentioned it in the video), but this system will give you the LOOK but not the FUNCTIONALITY of the plated parts (hardness of the plating that protects against future corrosion- especially in places that might experience rubbing one part against another).
Thanks for your comment. I think you are right - I'm not expecting the Eastwood Golden Cad to perform as well as cadmium plated parts although others have reported good results. Its worth mentioning that the Eastwood Golden Cad is an enamel paint which should make it more durable. Most of the moving parts in the case of this SL door are separated with plastic bushing so we'll just have to see how well this product stands the test of time. Mike
Great to see more of your excellent work. Take note that inner side of the rails must be very smooth, otherwise you will end up with very heavy windows (they already are due to the design). Have you decided to try to start the 450 SL? I have one myself and I am more than happy to show you how to negotiate with the D Jet engine.
Thanks for your comment. Yes it will be interesting to see if everything still works smoothly. The gold parts car is the 450SL and I havent tried starting it yet...although at least I now have a working key and ignition barrel. the ECU (or whatever it is called) is missing so I will have to procure a new one before attempting to start the car... The red project car is a 280SL and I have yet to connect the engine to the fuel system. I am certain I'll need help getting that baby started! Its a long slow process reassembling the project car but we are slowly getting there. Mike
@@MikesMercsandothercars Great. The ECU on these cars (D Jet) are quite expensive, but they can be refurbished. I have a spare one at home that is defective, I'm happy to send it out to you, but you will need to find someone that can repair them. The D Jet fuel injection system is a fully electronic fuel injection and was extremely advanced at the time, so advanced in fact that Mercedes went back to mechanical fuel injection in 1975, this system was only available from 1970 to 1974 (Mercedes only went back to electronic fuel injection around 1994/1995).
Patience is a virtue, and now the parts are ready for another 40 years. Great work as always
Thanks for your positive encouragement. These things do take time but like you say, should be good for a good few years. Mike

@@cav4290 Thanks - I may well take you up on that offer. Really interested to see whether either of those two cars start! Mike
