BMW iX1 vs Volvo XC40 Recharge: Battle of the small prestige electric SUVs

  • Buyers of small prestige all-electric SUV aren't exactly short of choice right now, but the choice just got even wider with the introduction of the brand new BMW iX1.
It boasts a set of numbers that look fairly compelling, too. It has a 64.7kWh battery that gives it a maximum average range of around 270 miles, and a pair of electric motors that send 308bhp to all four wheels, making it capable of 0-62mph in just 5.6 seconds. For all that, prices start at £53,295 (at the time of writing).
One of the most popular cars already in that class comes in the form of the Volvo XC40 Recharge, and the numbers on that car look broadly similar. Prices for the dual-motor model in this CarGurus UK twin test start from £51,755, and with 402bhp at its disposal, 0-62mph is dealt with in 4.9 seconds. However, recent updates to the car have given it a slight advantage over the BMW in some areas. The useable battery capacity has been increased from 75kWH to 79kWh, taking the maximum average range up from 272miles to 334 miles. How's that for a response?
Obviously, however, there's much more to these cars that just the numbers, and in this CarGurus UK twin test, Vicky Parrott compares our two contenders in a variety of areas including quality, practicality, technology, value for money, and of course, what they're like to drive.

    CarGurus verdict
The BMW iX1 is a seriously comprehensive premium SUV that offers the best infotainment and cabin finish in the class. It’s also a sophisticated car to drive yet a practical family car, so it has the essentials wrapped up. However, it’s inundated with rivals, from the Nissan Ariya, Skoda Enyaq iV and Hyundai Ioniq 5 through the Mercedes EQA, Audi Q4 e-tron and Tesla Model Y, and plenty more, besides.
Amongst those rivals are cars that offer a roomier interior and longer driving range at a lower price, but if the premium badge and lustre that it brings is an important factor to you (and we can see why it would be) then the BWM iX1 should be very near the top of your electric family SUV list.
    Pros
Very classy interior and infotainment system
    Good to drive
    Efficiency is pretty good
    Cons
Not as versatile as some rivals
An expensive option in the class
Dimensions aren't as compact as they once were

    The CarGurus verdict
You could be forgiven for buying an XC40 purely on its desirability factor, but there’s a good deal more to admire about this small SUV than just its cool, Skandi image.
As well as being an extremely pleasant car to drive or be driven in, due to its elegantly appointed interior and comfortable road manners, it’s also a very easy car to live with, thanks to generous passenger space and family-friendly practicality. As well as the added reassurances of Volvo’s obsession with crash avoidance and mitigation, there are promising signs to suggest the XC40 should be a hardy and reliable companion.
Garnering more fans daily, strong demand for used XC40 will also guarantee any investment you make will be slow to depreciate. With a strong backdrop of proven models and a future focus on hybrid and full electrification, it’s difficult to see anything other than a bright future for Volvo’s premium SUV.
    Pros
    Stylish, chunky looks
    Excellent safety kit
Comfortable as well as good to drive
    Cons
Rear seats not the most comfortable
    Electric version is expensive
Infotainment system on earlier models a bit fiddly

We don't get the iX1 here in Canada. So it's about the same price as the XC40 when built with similar options? Except it has a smaller battery and less power? Here's in Canada the XC40 AWD with the first big 10k dollar option package is the same price as a Model Y AWD.

Another brilliantly presented video Vicky. A great objective comparison of these two great cars. Personally I thing there have been some penny pinching from both brands given the price but hopefully in the next years as supply chains come back up to speed,, with EV demand slowing in the UK and with an increased choice of cars the prices should normalise somewhat unless the brands agree to get greedy but I think that is unlikely. Many thanks for sharing. My pick would be the Volvo right now but I'm not in a position that I need to change right now.

Penny pinching? Too right! I am really shocked by the poor quality of the iX1/X1's interior - it's so much worse than I was expecting after 30 years in 3, 5 & X5 series cars. Some examples: no lining in the door pockets, terrible hard, shiny & scratchy plastics everywhere, no oddments drawer under the steering wheel, rear seats are dropped using a flimsy fabric pulls (not BMW's usual seat-top catches), middle rear seatbelt retracts into the car roof (because the seats are so flimsy), cardboard parcel shelf lifted by strings......

I just test drove the iX1, my dealer got it in only yesterday.
I loved its refinement, and was impressed by its performance compared to my current 128ti. It was very impressive inside, and felt way more premium than the XC40 Recharge I drove a couple of weeks ago.
I also tested an i4 40 this morning, and I was surprised to find that the i4 was much sloppier around bends, roundabouts etc than the iX1. It felt like a much heavier car, despite likely weighing much the same.
I think BMW have managed to hide all the battery weight more effectively in the iX1.
The XC40 also suffered from the same issue I found on the XC60 and Polestar 2, namely that the rails under the front seats are set too close together, which makes for very limited space under the seat for rear passengers to place their feet. This was what dealt a fatal blow to the XC60 when we were looking for a family SUV, and we went with the X3 instead.
When you have a 6’2” teenage son with size 11 feet, it actually makes all the difference. Once again, the iX1 doesn’t suffer from this odd Volvo group quirk, making the rear much more comfortable for tall and large footed passengers.

If these cars were £38 000 then the picture might be different but at £58k you really must be in love with the idea of an EV and have access to another ICE vehicle as back up for away from home trips - no those public chargers are just not up to the grade.. A hundred years ago, people said the same thing. Then Henry Ford came out with the model T in black and things began to change. 12 years ago a guy called Musk came out with an EV that came in 5 colours, and slowly, the car industry realized they needed to change. He’s sold 2 million cars since then. In a year’s time, Volvo will have as many options as Tesla (in a lot more colours). BMW already has what, 8 or more models? Maybe you aren’t ready yet, but please don’t pick a diesel. Your lungs will thank you.

But even so, paying the charges to enter most large cities in the UK must give you pause. In my part of the world, we’ve had no rain to speak of since April (in the so-called rainforest), and tens of thousands have been driven from their homes by wild fires. Thankfully, I got a $9000 rebate for buying an EV, and in over a year, I’ve yet to spend $500 charging it, which compares to what I was spending a month in fuel for a V8 LR Discovery. Unfortunate that the government there can’t see the sense of supporting EVs, but I suppose it’s to be expected, given their track record. Enjoy your diesel.

I have a solar panel in my garden that powers my ix1. Even if you use a diesel generator station, you still win here. Also, if you operate an electric car in winter, it does not need to be warmed up. It is beneficial for the government that you consume a lot of diesel fuel, this is a fact. The era of coal engines is leaving, no matter how scary. And what repair are we talking about? when buying these machines, the warranty from the manufacturer is 5 years. My wife and I just did our sums. She has a twenty year old Eurovan and I a year old XC40 Recharge. She spends about £2500 a year on our beloved camper, and it costs about £75 a tank for premium. Mine needs a service every 2 years costing about £100 and uses about £20 a month in electricity, and drives 750+ miles. Now our electricity is a lot cheaper and petrol a bit less on the west coast of Canada, but you catch my drift. The capital cost of a new car is obscene in the UK. I paid the equivalent of £52000 with tax for my Ultimate spec XC40, but in one year I’ve spent just £240 to drive over 8000 miles. Plus, when it needs charging I just plug it in. The electricity provider switches the charger on when demand is lowest. And trust me, if my car is humdrum with 408hp, you must drive something very special indeed!

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. The Volvo interior is more minimalist, certainly, but I prefer simple, and could care less about fussy screen layouts. Any interior is going to seem passé after a few years, unless you drive it daily and are more focused on getting from point A to point B. Perhaps you will like the look of the new EX30, but it sounds like you really like the BMW which is fine. In saying she felt the Volvo felt better, it is possible that the bottom of the line BMW SUV just doesn’t have the handling chops of, say, the i4. It’s still a very refined and popular compact SUV. You are correct. Volvo does not currently use UWB for keyless entry. It does use proximity sensors, obviating the need to use the radio frequency transmitters which are prone to cloning. It also uses a dormancy mode in the key, preventing it from sending a response code when triggered if the key has been motionless after a few minutes. In addition, access to the wiring system to break into the car via OBD or other peripherals would appear to have further protections. Volvo is one of the few companies that only allows access via a very expensive subscription. Finally, stealing an XC40 for resale would likely be an exercise in futility, given the process of rekeying and registering the user profile with Volvo, which depends on the VIN and checking on the RO as well as country of origin.

NNNOOOOOO!!!! My favourite car reviewer on the net, and you just came out with that most horrid of all Americanisms..... 'frunk'!!! Why would you do that Vicky? WHY?? We've had boots in the front for DECADES (Beetle or 911 anyone?), so WHY when Musk comes up with a stupid word for the front of his Teslas, do we all have to act like HE is the one who just invented the front boot, and so after multiple decades, we abandon our own language to jump over to his? I love ya Vicky, but using that godawful word is unforgivable! 😭

Because froot sounds horrid and might sound like fruit to most. You do know how the word trunk came about for cars though right?

I’m an American but also a bit of an Anglophile. To my ear “frunk” just sounds better. Kind of cool really. Froot makes sense in terms of description but doesn’t sound great. I got caught saying boot the other day as I’m watching too many EV car reviews by carwow etc. Watched a review yesterday of a Model Y and the Scotsman kept on saying trunk instead of boot and had to correct himself. So I’m not the only one struggling to stay consistent. : )

Save yourself 5mins and just go for Tesla model Y long range

OK, so when I bought my Volvo a year ago, it cost the equivalent of £52K, compared to over £60K at the time for the AWD Y in my market. I looked, and it was too expensive. They are now dumping them for about £40K in our market. Tesla has done some fine engineering, and in some ways are still years ahead, but in others like build quality, not so much. I’m guessing you either aspire to own a Tesla, or have so much money that spending £60K and seeing the value of your car plummet doesn’t phase you. Geely alone has 2 new Volvos, 2 Polestars and 3 Zeekr branded cars coming out in the next year and a bit. Tesla? The “Cybertruck”, and the hint of a small car. Maybe. Still think a model Y is a great idea?

Volvo has many mechanical and electrical problems….probably has unique safety features nevertheless this brand is underwhelming

I love my new iX1, much better brand, perhaps best in class modern interior (vs Benz the 2nd but too many screens today isn't it?) more roomy vs Volvo.
