- The third issue of The Rise of Kylo Ren by Charles Soule tells us how Ben was accepted into the ranks of the Knights of Ren, but also has a lot of cool things to say about the Force. This is my review for the issue.

@@Nicholas_Chen_ it was hinted in other works that a toddler ben solo would dress like his dad. For example in the previews for the bb-8 inspired animated shorts called Star Wars Roll Out. I'm still a bit annoyed that we never got see the ben and han solo adventure episode. It seems like star wars roll out got canceled before they showed it.

The Force explanation was good. It mix the scientific side with the mystical side. I believe that the "open door" that you begin with is the midichlorian count. But is due to training and getting in touch with the Force that makes you more powerfull with it.
Exactly that’s how I’ve always thought of it.
When Luke said Bens door was naturally more open than hers at the start I think that meant that since Ben has Skywalker blood his Midichorian count is near that of Luke, Leia and Anakin

I was one of those people who was arguing about these things before like freaking Dragon Ball Z power levels. In the Expended Universe Jedi had different spheres to be good at, like here, some of them was better moving object some of them could not, that don't mean in they less important. Anakin was the Chosen One, but even the new canon reinforce that never was able to connect fully with animals and other beings by the Force, that wasn't his nature.
That's a good way to look at it.
i wish the movies were about these characters. Seeing a new generation of Jedi would've been great

Well, I agree that it would be cool to see more of the Knights.
But a new Jedi Order... Well, I think we got enoght about Jedi and this shit in the prequels, I liked the Force Awekens and The Last Jedi because they added new events and mythology to the SW universe.
We may see an early version of the next generation of Jedi in The Mandolorian season 2

So who’s gonna be Ben’s “good death”? I’m betting on Ren. After all Ben has to become the master of the Knights of Ren somehow, and Ren going out like that just fits with his character. Either way, Tai and Voe are screwed.
I think you’re dead on. With only 1 issue left there isn’t enough time to set up anyone else and that segues perfectly into what we knew going into the series.
Yeah, seems that they are going the route of that ben solo is gonna be forced into killing the leader of the knights of ren after bonding with him, that will be his good death.

I think Ren is going to be killed by one of the Jedi apprentice. Ben's good death as to be the bald dude. He's his only friend in the entire galaxy.
It’s hard for me to read these comics knowing his story ends so soon in TROS. Adam Driver’s change-up to portray Ben had so much style that I wish writers could take that character beyond TROS but it just ends as it begins.
Nathan-DTS agree it would have been better if live and stand trail it would have been something new for the sequel trilogy to tackle instead beholden to tropes of OG trilogy

Yeah I’m conflicted on this one. It give us more backstory on Kylo and The Knights of Ren, but it would have been a let down when the knights did absolutely nothing in TRoS. Kinda of like Phasma’s wasted potential between the films and the comics/books.
At least we finally know where the DL-44 came from.

In this issue, Luke described how I have always believed the Force works almost to the letter. For the sake of fairness in regards to ALL aspects of the Force, I do believe one's Midi-chlorian Count is the factor that determines how wide that door is to begin with and how easily it is to widen or close it. Which is really how George Lucas intended it in the first place. Don't forget, All living things have Midi-chlorians in their cells and All living things have the Force flowing through them. It's kind of a neverending "chicken and egg" situation.
When this series was announced I was super excited to learn about Ben and Knights of Ren. I’m still enthusiastically reading them, but with how utterly useless the Knights were portrayed in RoS, and especially with your very apt comparison to a frat, it’s now much less about them and more about Ben.
Ren: "Okay, how much Breaking Benjamin do you listen to?"
Ben: "Uh...."
The door analogy perfectly combines both 'The power in the Force is passed down in lineage' and 'The Force can wake up in anyone'. The openness to the Force passes down, but every closed door can be open.
The Knights of Ren are like half-cult, half-biker gang and I absolutely love it. I want to see much more of them.
One third cult,one third biker gang and one third collage fraternity. I'd love more of them too,I hope they aren't connected to the Sith though.
The door analogy is an interesting idea. Going with this train of thought, that would mean for some, the door would be easier to open.
This would also explain how someone cuts themselves off from the force. They simply close the door and lock it.
So ben starter out with a blaster in the knights of ren, interesting.

I love that we're getting to know more about Luke's other students, but utterly lament that we'll never see their stories, let alone this story, on the big screen. Le sigh. The one thing I hoped for as a child was getting to see just a glimpse of Hamill as Luke training new Jedi initiates. Alas, that story is relegated to comics and novels yet again.
Supposedly we might be seeing a bit of it in The Mandalorian at some point
In truth the Knights of Ren are just a bunch of misunderstood bros who travel around the galaxy looking for more bros to join their boyband

@Nathan-DTS That sounds accurate up until the end. This is a story about how Ben becomes Kylo Ren. Soule said that the whole thing leads up to a choice that is both inevitable and utterly preventable at the same time. I think you're right that Ren will kill one of the apprentices, probably Tai (the one Ben was closest to), and that will enrage him enough to kill Ren, probably in a manner that damages the kyber crystal in Ren's lightsaber. Ben will then declare himself to be *Kylo* Ren, and his first act as Kylo Ren will be to kill a wounded and helpless Voe, becoming the monster she insisted he was all along.
I really like that door analogy. I always thought the lineage thing was more about emotional baggage and how someone is not controlled by their heritage.
I guess the one thing they avoid talking about is how this door is closed completely to many people.
I want to know more about "The Knights of Ren" and their history,like how did they form and how long have they been around,a few decades? Centuries even? I personally hope they aren't Sith related..
This portrayal definitely fits Soule’s description of the Knights as basically a dark side biker gang
It's been a real challabge getting hold of this series tbh, I pre ordered issue 1 and 2, issue 1 arrived today. Its awesome.

So the doors quote is interesting as it's very similar to the way Dave Filoni always described the force and Midichlorians. Midichlorians basically show who is more naturally gifted in the force or in this case who can open the door more easily. Anyone can learn the ways of the force but people with higher Midichlorian counts have a natural ability to pick it up. A person with lower counts can be great force users but will take more time and need practice opening up to it.
Seriously, is it just a coincidence Ren looks exactly like an older Ben? Or am I imagining things? When he first took his helmet off I was like WOOAH and expecting the characters to react the same way, but nobody has mentioned it??
I just thought the same thing. His character wasn't explained any further, not even a background. It's implied the knights knew Snoke already and Ren mentioned 'the master'. Perhaps he refers to Palpatine himself.
After force awakens I tought the knights of ren were a organization stated by kylo ren and other luke's students that have fallen and followed Ben Solo to the dark side, and "Ren" would be a word for darkness as "Rey" would be light, like the Ying and Yang of the SW universe in my mind kira rey would be a thing.

Thank you Charles Soule for making me care so much more about Kylo Ren. Depending on how this will go I'll likely buy the collected TPB of this.
I've loved this story so far. While I've liked most of the recent Star Wars comics, I just haven't been super enthusiastic about them, and I've been wondering if I should just wait to read them as trades. But here, each issue stands on it's own very well, so it always leaves me satisfied, and the wait between issues makes me even more excited.
While Rise of Kylo Ren works well as a short 4 issue series, I hope Soule will return to do additional graphic novels that detail even more of Ben Solo's history (and keep Will Sliney as penciller, because his artwork is awesome).
I'm starting to see Ben's fall in a different way. His turn seems to come from a series of accidents.
The new Jedi’s attire (I’m gonna call him the Holocron Jedi) looks eerily similar to Galen Marek’s bounty hunter disguise from The Force Unleashed. Nice little Easter egg imo.
Honestly, Ben's life is pretty fucked up, in some way even worse than Anakin who arguably is the most tragic villain in cinema history. It's like he has never accomplished anything and had any chance to be great or good or happy, and in turn, he experienced only depression and hatred in the process.
I feel like this should be an animated series, rather than a comic.

I wish this came out a few years ago.
I hope we can see some kind of show with younger ben and the other jedi, or at least something around that time period where we can pop in on ben here and there.
I have some friends who don't like ben's character through the sequel trilogy because they've only seen him as kylo ren, the bad guy. I feel like giving ben the anakin clone wars treatment would do him good and turn some people around on his character, like this comic is doing.
I'm an effective kind of liking the corn character. Other than that, it's actually really cool comic it's really cool seeing stuff Like this how you going to be a good origin story

In season 6 of Clone Wars we learned that the reason the Clones betrayed the Jedi because of inhibitor chips in their head. But in ROTS some of the clones don’t even hear the “order 66” and they just start killing Jedi when other Clones just nod at them. How does that work?
It’s a damn shame we didn’t get this in the films. I hope we get a new animated series about Luke’s Temple and the origin of Kylo Ren. I like the comics but a series would be so much better.
But if what Luke says is true, can you make a video of Jedi who you believe have opened the door? It has to be really hard at least to have the door wide open.
I've really been enjoying this series because Ben is so heavily conflicted. Even after being attacked twice he still doesn't want to hurt anyone and just wants to be left alone. I am a little disappointed once again though with the Knights of Ren. These guys continue to just seem like the guys who look cool but do almost nothing stereotypes. I'm surprised Ben even wanted to be the leader of these guys in the first place.

Midichlorians represent the fact that spirituality and science can co-exist. Just because there is a biological component does not make it less profound. Lineage and midichlorians are still canon and involved, but what they represent is how "open" that door is initially - to use Luke's analogy. So, both what Luke said and the scientific aspects are simultaneously and harmoniously true.
This comics are too short. One issue left and we have to know how ben became obsessed with vader, we have really not seen that he cares at all about him. May be we would never know the reactions of Luke, leia and Han after the incident. Ren would be killed in next issue and how he became leader? How he also decided being in the first order, joining knights of Ren and Snoke not necesarily shows his motivatios to be in FO. I really wanted to know how was Ben before the incident, like in the academy, his relationship with Luke, his personality, and may be 1 issue is not enough to show what he did after becoming kylo ren and before TFA, in Tfa is too much dark compared to Ben in this threes issues, 1 issue is not enough to show that change.
Just a question: where do you have to go to read these comics? I never find them.

I’m enjoying it for the story it’s telling, not the one it leads to. Vader attempting to overthrow Palpatine and resurrect Padme in his comics were obviously never gonna work since we know how the story ends...but if you view it as it’s own thing it makes it worthwhile

@@Valken985 I heard they are going ot do a Ben Solo series after the sequels. From what I heard Leia gave her life for Ben's kinda like what Ben did for Rey. So he's coming back. Which is cool, since Ben has potential for a great story arc.
