The Isle of Man is nominated for a travel award....and that's bad.

  • The Isle of Man has been nominated as Most Desirable Island in Europe at the 2024 Wanderlust reader awards. What sounds like a great thing could actually be bad for people trying to live here.
    Agree? Disagree? Let me know in the comments. And yes, I pronounce Wanderlust the German way because it's a German word :)

    Absolutely agree with the lack of long term rentals, my husband and I are moving to IOM soon for work and there is nothing available for us, so we are unsure of what this will mean long term, it is maddening. We are coming from a very tourist dependent island, so am well aware of how damaging cruise ships can be and excessive tourism can affect all aspects of small island life.

    Having a lot of back and forth with my wife about moving over, been coming to the island for 30 years and my son is 5th generation to visit, he made his first visit this year and was treated so well by everyone. Everywhere we went people made a fuss of him from riding in the guard van on the steam train to free post cards. A truly special place because of the people.

    The most expensive piece of water to cross even outside of race weeks. Airlines limited. Hospital treatment limited. Lovely place but when the kids grow up where will they work? What is there for them . Where will they live? After 2 weeks for tt and gp i am more than ready to get off. Love going but i miss lidls too much!

      Solid point. Safety and home schooling is what you can offer for the kiddos though. Until you escape to South America well why not just go to South America already I suppose. IOM will be brought down as the United Socialist Kingdom enters into its decades of islamic communist rule

    I could not agree with you more, the Isle of Man should be very careful what they wish for.
    Here in New York State, USA, the Adirondack Park is a vast mountain wilderness of over 6 million acres. The High Peaks region, near Lake Placid contains the state's highest mountains with Mt. Marcy being the highest at 5,344 feet. To summit Mt. Marcy requires a full day's hike of over 10 hours.
    The High Peaks have become so popular that this little village is overrun. That is wonderful for commerce, but extremely overwhelming by the enormous amount of visitors.
    As a result ill prepared and inexperienced people trek into the deep wilderness of the High Peaks by the thousands daily.
    Our state's Forest Rangers are run ragged with the high volume of wilderness rescues that they must perform daily. These are not simple rescues, they are very involved requiring a vast amount of resources. It is not uncommon that helicopter extractions are required. The taxpayers are on the hook to cover the cost of these rescues. It is not uncommon for a single simple rescue to cost at a starting rate of 5,000 dollars and a single helicopter rescue to cost well above 40,000 dollars.
    The High Peaks used to be pleasant, but now a McDonald's franchise on the summit of Mt. Marcy would be quite lucrative.
    Yes, the Isle of Man should be very careful what they wish for.

      Good thing here is that if u are not a Manx citizen u need a work permit. So u have to show u have skills that are needed. Work permit needs renewed every year. After 5 years of working and contributing u don't need one anymore. My Mrs is a Scouser. She is now a Manx citizen and works as an assistant manager at the post office..

    • @01menyou
      @01menyou หลายเดือนก่อน

      @AndyCaley of course, no problem.
      There's a clear determination to drive the West's fiat monetary systems over the cliff. Not to say it wouldn't have eventually happened, but the events of the last 4 years were ideal to ensure it was sooner.
      The pricing of most goods and assets is based off interest rates. We have lived in an economy where the natural rate of interest has been depressed and so assets bought on tick, like houses, rise in price. Not value, just price.
      A new system would use a substantially higher base rate, and so houses would collapse in price, as the value is reflected in the new currency.
      This will be a very bad situation for buy to let holders.
      And this is only part of what's coming. When the same process exposes hypothecation in equity markets, and uncertainty over who actually owns assets in a crisis, then a real nightmare beckons.
      I was alluding to all this as a reset. The remarks of the WEF are foretelling it imo.
      We are going to see, pdq.
