Re: M16 jamming all the time
It’s because when they issued the rifles troops were wrongly told the weapon didn't need to be cleaned so cleaning kits weren't issued. Additionally, the Army used the wrong propellant in the 5.56 ammo, which created reliability issues.
When properly cared for the M16 is a vastly superior weapon to the M14.
Early M16s were also rushed to a humid jungle battlefield without chrome lined bores and barrels, causing further issues.
Lmao someone earned their sponsored mmm good boy points. The Mattel 16 is, was, and will always be a piece of junk pushed only because it was cheaper to pump out ALOT of them+ammo. It was proned to jam because... They were in a wet jungle lmao.
When I picked one up and used it I knew immediately why it was so hated. Total garbage.

@@pokeman5000 apparently your reading comprehension skills are lacking.
@@41tl Time to bust out the ol Ctrl C and Ctrl V. The Gun by CJ Chivers.
The M-16 design, by contrast, already has a weak moving extractor. This combined with the over-pressured ball powder, brass material, and the non-tapered casing design of the 5.56 led to the worst type of malfunction: failure to extract. Failure to extract is rare now with M16/M4 and has been since the M16A1. However, it does still happen with weak extractors or bad ammo. (This is you) Hence all the proposed replacements for the M16/M4 have been piston driven designs, almost all of which were short-stroke.
The topic of discussion are the guns USED IN VIETNAM. But I would still put forth those guns a hunks of trash even later versions.
Shane, please give us dawgs a monthly history podcast.

These edits that blend comedy and history are S tier. I’m already subbed to the podcast Patreon but still find it worthwhile to hit these videos up.
These are so much better than those other channels that just chop up random episodes with no rhyme or reason or respect for the source. This feels actually complementary.
Bless you dawg. This comment made my day.
Complimentary is exactly the word I was looking for too. So gay
True!
I wish Shane would hang out with Quinn more often. He's got the same interest in Historical events that Shane does and I absolutely love hearing his perspectives. I still think of Colin's quote when he said not everyone wants peace.
True, it was an interesting talk.

They're not historians, they're comedians lmao
They also did an episode about Japans atrocities during the war, a very good watch if you havent seen it

*Imagine they make their own Farce of The Penguins but it’s Matt and Shane dubbing over soldiers in old combat footage for 3 hours straight*
As others have said the problem with early M16's weren't because of the rifle but troops being told they didn't have to be cleaned and the wrong gunpowder, but it is worth noting that many troops in Vietnam did greatly prefer .30 cals like the M14/M60/BAR because they penetrated the thick jungle brush significantly better than the little 55g .22 cals coming out of the M16.
I didn't realize Teddy Atlas was such a history buff.😊

37:01 “I like the fact he thinks he’d get into West Point. You know what’s a hard school to get into.”
The problem I have with Vietnam discussions.
They always make it around like the American troops were losing.
They won every engagement, unlike the French. The politicians and military leaders just didn't have a vision. The Americans were adaptive and winning against the North.
Just like Rhodesian bush fighters, without help from home, you can be the best fighters and still lose.
Not every engagement, but every major battle was a success.
If your platoon was ambushed by a squad sized element, and they killed/wounded 50% but the enemy lost 75% of their force and retreated, you lost to a smaller force.
This was addressed once during a post war encounter-
Americna Gen.: "You know, you never once beat us in battle."
NVA Gen.: (pauses) "Yes, that is true. It is also irrelevant."
Hello fellow Dawgz; may peace be with you…

If you were wondering yes its Colin Quinn
With Shane's vast knowledge of Ameriican history, how is it even possible he hadn't heard of Audie Murphy, the single most decorated U.S. combat vet of all time? Legit shocked.
The m14 was not better than the m16. The m14 jams if it gets mud on the action. The m16s were jamming because they didn't have cleaning kits

What was even funny about the entire concept of domino theory was how after Americans in Vietnam vs China and the Khmer rouge went to war with each other
The US didn’t anticipate communist infighting; they didn’t understand the ideology well enough to know it’s a predictable, certain outcome.
I always found it funny how they believed in the domino theory which itself implies that communism is a superior stable system (which it obviously isn’t)
I never understand why Eisenhower gets thrown under the bus for Vietnam, he’s like the only person who tried to keep America out of it
Didn't he send the first "advisors" and then troops. Oliver stone did a good documentary that touched on all the president's involvement in Vietnam
It's almost like we should just leave people alone. Isn't that the freedom we're fighting for?
Regarding the M16 in Vietnam, please watch IvanPrintsGuns video on the topic.

Golden Triangle
"Vietnam: A Television History" was the first PBS documentary about Vietnam which came out long before the Ken Burns version. The first one was much better, it had more information, better historical detail and analysis. Ken Burns has a lot of personal stories and B.S. excuses that try to cover up how messed up the war was. US involvement wasn't a mistake, it wasn't an accident, that's a lie. What we did, we did on purpose, the whole time.
Definitely not half way wasted
Americans actually picked the ak 47s and used them cause m4 and m16 were constantly jamming !! AK47 is way simpler mechanism !
I regrettably have to make a correction to the MacArthur/ Inchon bit. It was the opposite of their summation, and definitely was not a MacArthur useless fk up. From Wikipedia:
“Most military scholars consider the battle one of the most decisive military operations in modern warfare. Spencer C. Tucker, the American military historian, described the Incheon landings as "a brilliant success, almost flawlessly executed," which remained "the only unambiguously successful, large-scale US combat operation" for the next 40 years.[102] Commentators have described the Incheon operation as MacArthur's "greatest success"[103] and "an example of brilliant generalship and military genius."[104]”
I don’t get the connection between prioritizing communism and not cracking down on drug dealers. What does the DEA have to do with the fight against communism?
Make money off the cartels by allowing it, and by putting people in jail, not to mention they kinda wanted Americans and all western societies to be addicted to dopamine and drugs are the quickest and one of the worst dopamine fixes, keeps everyone docile as long as they have their fix. They punish normal people who defend themselves harsher than drug addicts and criminals so we’re more dependent on the government.
They don’t want the drug dealers to have communist values so the CIA just made sure that no leaks in there drug empire and you won’t have any communist values.
The money from the drug trade was used to fund anti Communist militias.
We had to use off the books money to fund illegal wars.
Large amounts of money not accounted for by Congress... Disenfranchised exploited people in drug productive countries ripe for communist ideology to take root.
The drug lords were fighting the commies
