  • The Crinoline, the Corset and the role of 19th Century Women.
Eugénie launched the glamour and chic of the crinoline as a costume worthy of the glittering court of Napoleon III and the monumental reconstruction of Paris.
Parisienne chic was exported throughout the world by her couturier, Charles Worth, and the catalogues of the new department stores. But this chic had its darker side - Women became prisoners of their corsets and skirts.
This lecture was recorded on 9 September 2009.

Her Mom was a Kirkpatrick, and Eugenie is a cousin of mine. Her story is so interesting because of all she went through! I think she eventually came to Maryland, because she got locked out of...France?

Sylvia is brilliant! It took me ages to find her name. It should really be in the title. Thanks so much for sharing!

Oh lord.... The 'vaguely Matador' jacket of Empress Eugenie are NOT symbolic of her Spanish heritage, they are also part of her Scottish heritage since they resemble jackets seen in scottish military regiments, military bands etc...they are inspired by doublets I think.

Paris was lit in winter since the reign of Louis 14th , even on moonlit nights, this woman needs to research her subject.

When "Gen. Washington's City" the architect, Pierre Charles L'Enfant, designed the city in such a way, that revolutionary mobs could be choked off between one square and another.
Poor man, he just couldn't foresee this past January 6th!

Like all the series, very inaccurate, which completely spoils it.
