You could totally do a coast to coast P50 drive in the USA! The P50's were not road legal for a long time in the US, but they are now. However, they are classified as mopeds and as such are NOT legal to drive on limited access interstate freeways and highways, so you would have to stick to driving on regular roads. Easily doable though!
I mean, me and a mate went from where we live in Bedfordshire england, to Glasgow scotland and back on out 50cc mopeds. Was a fun 3 weeks during the summer lat year
I'm from the Isle of Man and by chance I met Alex whilst I was on holiday. He was parked up in a Sainsbury's carpark surrounded by a crowd of people next to his Peel P50 and on his way down from John o' Groats to Lands end raising money for charity. I can recall him saying about how cold his hands were in late December after driving. It was incredible to see one out of the *blue* when I haven't seen one on the island in the 17 years I've lived here and also a testimant to their rarity. Amazing.
All I want to say (and I am sure you have heard it before) is that this... brings back the enjoyment of watching Top Gear. I realize that's not the point, but - this is about the CARS - it's interesting you can tell Mike enjoys what he does, and enjoys learning about the cars etc. I appreciate the fact we get to watch things like this so much - Thank you.
You know what, i forgot about Clarkson's 'prediction' of it being the future, but when i think about it, it's not very crazy. The car could be driven pretty much everywhere, and when you need to make a long haul, you can just park it inside a big bus transport, or just drive it home and throw it in the back of a family SUV.

I've known since I was a kid the P50 held one or two world records for World's Smallest Production Car, but now I guess it holds another: World's Most Expensive Small Production Car.
$9500-11000 for a modern one is a lot better than an original at $180,000+...idk how this oculd possibly have cost $25k when their website says 11,500 complete or 9500 for the kit

This film was fun to watch. I remember watching Clarkson’s review on the “better” Top Gear and him driving it through the old BBC offices. It is unbelievable that the P50 is pert near worth $131,000!😱
Yeah, I definitely want to see him do the Cannonball in a P50. But with long-haul trucks over here doing 85mph on the interstate, I really don't think it would be safe.
you'd think they would have countered the near tipping ability of the car by adding some ballast by the left hip of the driver to stop that and then if necessary boosted the power a smidge to counter that weight addition?
This one is made of fiberglass instead of metal, like the original would have been, so this might be one reason for its easy tipping, and this one has already more power than the original. (8hp vs 5).
I saw some G-Wiz - REVAi - in their native environment (Bangalore). You can see the point, there. Most of the locals are in two-wheelers. Aside: Bangalore is an amazing place.

If you ever go to Peel, Isle of Man, you will understand why they made this car. A tiny, mad little place, with tiny streets and tiny pubs and shops. They call themselves "Sunset City", campaigning for official city status despite being the size of a typical British village. And it all still looks like Britain did in the 1960s. This is the place mad enough to build the P50.
Moving small cars has always been fun way of messing with your friends, but i guess people do it to strangers as well. My aunt had an old nissan micra, and we turned that sideways so she couldn't get out😂
I'm kinda wondering what a modified Peel P50 would be like. Something like putting bigger wheels with more grip on them, slightly more powerful and quieter modern engine, maybe some ballast on the left side to balance the car out, stuff like that. Would be pretty cool to see.

The major motorways in the USA have minimum speed limits of 45mph. Might I recommend driving coast to coast via back roads. In the interest of preserving life, might I encourage you to avoid the major highways.
With all the electric conversions people are doing nowadays, I do wonder what it might do for oddball cases such as the Peel or perhaps the Reliant family. There's a G-Wiz in the town I work in. It has a sticker on the rear window that says "yes, it's electric!" and I think it is a later model with some minor improvements over the original; I believe there was also a third iteration that introduced lithium batteries amongst other things, but they seem to be harder to find.

The Clarkson effect is real. The fact that a P50 is over 100,000 pounds now and the fact that people probably had never heard about it is a testament to his influence on car culture
I remember seeing awhile ago the p50 cars were doing an electric version of the p50 ... i mean add some Tesla batteries to lower the center of gravity might even make it safer overall and making it quite seems like a plus 👍
Makes no sense... the battery pack in a Renault Twizzy weights 98 kilogram, while the P50 weights ~60 kg... so replacing the petrol engine + fuel tank with battery + e-engine would probably double the gross weight (including an orang utan)... with some following issues on the suspesion, brakes etc, making it again more heavy
Please do a video explaining what happened with the mondeo. You really gave mad ford bad press. We all know the production team massively rushed the job so we need the full story. Don't pin it all on mad ford
yeah as far as the work that mad ford actually did, it was well done. the car was properly assembled, but it was stuff that THEY didn't build that ultimately ended up in failure. they didnt do a full engine rebuild, just a quick refresh with seals and such, and had they actually done a full rebuild, if the cylinders were toasted, they'd know. and the poor fuel pressure causing the scoring would have been remedied by a new pump at the time of rebuild.

The only thing the drag race was missing was the external camera whipping around and over correcting the speed of the cars like classic top gear.

About 10 years ago I drove a Peel Trident. That had been converted to electric & looked like it was from the Jetsons

Tesla batteries would destroy the car. It doesn't need a lot of power. 5kW would be plenty.

On American highways, no matter the speed limit, most people drive about 80 mph. Actually many highways have a minimum speed of 45mph.
