  • Bond gets briefed by Q in GOLDENEYE (1995). Desmond Llewellyn, who played Q, got a surprise he wasn’t expecting when they started filming this scene: “A girl is sitting at the desk and suddenly she is ejected. Nobody had told me anything about this beforehand and I had a hell of a shock. I was trying to remember my lines and suddenly there was a whoosh and this girl disappeared from the scene.”

"You have a license to kill, not to break the traffic laws."
That's not actually correct. A License to Kill basically covers every crime up to and including first degree murder. It was the worst crime they could justify in the pursuit of espionage, so a License to Kill is basically a pre-emptive pardon for any crime commited in the service of Her Majesty's Government.
It's not like new trainee agents get a License to Fly-Tip and work their way up to License to Kill.
So Bond was actually acting entirely within his remit when he helped St. Petersburg by creating lots of new construction jobs.

"You have a license to kill, not to break the traffic laws."
That's not actually correct. A License to Kill basically covers every crime up to and including killing someone.

Pierce was an excellent choice for James Bond and I will forever miss Desmond Llewelyn. He made 'Q' such a memorable character much the same as John De Lancie did in another franchise.

Desmond and Pierce having a blast (literally) on the set. The pen scene was one where I THINK they had a couple of times where they cracked up.

"Please do return the equipment in one piece." Then, Bond proceeds to lose or break them 😂😂😂

"Don't touch that! It's my lunch."
In Bond's defense, Q has made a bunch of useful and deadly gadgets disguised as random unassuming objects over the years. I mean, for all James knew, that sandwich was actually a lump of military-grade plastic explosive or a sheath for a hidden combat knife that only LOOKED like a hoagie!

Ben Whishaw has brought a new angle to the Q Branch.
Desmond Llewelyn will always remain the finest Q. RIP sir.

The single funniest scene in James Bond history. The contrast between this and the rest of the film is made even more apparent by the fact that GoldenEye is a quite moody and dark Bond film, both in themes and aesthetic direction. It's almost like the film switched directors for this one scene - it's very much akin to a scene from a Naked Gun film.

When Q laughs at 007s writing on the wall joke that sounded like he found that genuinely funny

I can respect anyone who takes on the "Q" character because they all work so hard to deserve it. Just like all the actors who have done James Bond.
But for me, Desmond Llewelyn will always be the "Q" that comes to mind when I think of the character.

I'm half convinced that they gave the guys a basic script for these scenes but told them that they could improvise some parts.
the Bond Quips like writing on the wall, the pen, the writing is on the wall with them on edge of cracking up. it feels like at times they have this serious script made for the scene, but they were given some leeway to have fun with it.

I would have to say that out of all the James Bond films involving Q, portrayed by the late-Desmond Llewellyn, this particular scene is my favorite. I even like the ending of this clip in which James Bond inspects the sandwich before it's grabbed out of his hands by Q. Bond must have thought that it was a weapon of some sort before Q tells him that it's his lunch.

This is my favorite bond / Q scene from the series. Fun, light-hearted banter, and the initial transition into the parachute exploding from the car sets a perfect tone for all the rest of the random stuff in the lab.

    "The writing's on the wall?"
"Along with the rest of him!"
That's the only time Q ever found one of Bond's quips funny.
